Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

Sid's/Big Top in Plymouth (one by 169/55, the other by Ridgedale mall) is having a huge sale right now thanks to Labor Day coming up. Homewreckers of Captain and Smirnoff for about $18, Jameson 750 is $14, Maker's 750 is $16, and some other good prices.

Maker's 750s for $16? I would definitely pick up a few bottles if I could get that deal (unless, of course, it's limit one). It's like $26-28/fifth around here.

Homewrecker, is that a 1.5?

Also known, in more polite company, as a "handle". I also love calling it a homewrecker though. :D

Meanwhile, I lucksacked my way into a $25/fifth of Hendricks earlier this evening (it's normally mid-to-upper 30s around here).

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

There's a couple stores that keep the Maker's around $22-24 normally. However, some of those same stores want the same for Jameson, Powers, and $26+ for Jack.

Sid's/Big Top (same parent company) always have decent prices on the hard liquor, and are "normal" on most of the beers (although they have quite the selection for a non-specialty store).

Yes, handle is the more common name for a 1.75, but homewrecker sounds so much more evil. :D

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

$26+ for Jack is a joke (though we've talked about that before). Amazing what marketing and semi-indirect celebrity endorsements will do.

I think Jameson 750s are about $20 in this area.

Yes, we have, and the funny thing is, the price has gone UP to that in the past year or so, while the other more common whiskeys have stayed stagnant for the most part. When Jack costs more than Crown....that's just sad.

For the record, I think Crown is even more enormously overrated for its price. I once did a side-by-side taste test with S7, and it's only a little smoother. The flavor is nearly the same.

...but I know what you mean.

It is a tad smoother. Crown on the rocks: awesome. S7 on the rocks, meh.

It's overpriced, but not enough to really notice, and I know you know what I mean.

How do you hear about these sales? Website?

Stopping by to see if there's any good deals, circulars in the mail, newspaper. I'm sure if you signed up to their site they'd send you emails.

The last couple of big sales at Sid's/Big Top were found out due to circulars in the mail with a coupon (addressed to resident). I think they're really trying to replace MGM for your go-to store.

Just about to start my Sipper Saturday. A late start compared to a standard Sipper Saturday, but that's ok. It's before 5pm, so it still counts.

MGM isn't really that great of a liquor store, never has been. Big Top is pretty cool and seems to have good service and prices, but otherwise I go to the local stores (a privately-owned store a mile away, or the municipal store a couple miles the other way.) Both of those last two are happy to take orders, if there's something off-the-wall you want which they don't have.

MGM is my store because its a block away. So I am stuck with whatever selection/price they have. :(

Although i will say the one by my house has a pretty good selection of beers. Plus as i said earlier this week, there is often a set of boobs giving out free samples of booze. :D

$2.50 LI's at the B-Dubs. Sure, they're not of the same quality as a DT pitcher, but I'll take what I can get. :)

MGM, for a long time, had the widest selection of booze. Unfortunately, they haven't really changed with the times, because they haven't had to. With local stores getting in the stuff that MGM doesn't (most notably the craft beers/smaller breweries' bomber bottles), and superstores like Sid's/Big Top, I think MGM will either die a slow death, or change their style.

Honestly, MGM's idea of branching out is carrying Goose Island and Redhook.

Man, that bar was fantastic bbdl. Fun as hell. I'd definitely go back again.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

To celebrate 9 years at my current employer (and the fact that it sounded good) I had a Grand Teton Brewing Sheepeater Scotch Ale, part of their 2009 Cellar Reserve special line.

It was darn good. Darn good. Less sweet than other Scotch Ales I've had, but just as smooth and fulfilling.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

Tried some Woodford Reserve tonight.

Was good, but a bit strong in taste. Would be hard for me to drink a lot of it. It's more of a once in awhile bourbon.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

Bell's Octoberfest is...not a bad beer by any means, but not really trying to be a proper Oktoberfest either. I'm starting to think that if it doesn't involve significant-to-massive quantities of hops, Bell's doesn't really know what they're doing.

It's supposed to be a cool weekend, so I'm hoping to pick up some serious Oktoberfest-style brews on Friday night, and have a Sipper Saturday (™ Brent) for the first full day of college football. ;)
