Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Had some beer this past weekend.

Went to Ale Asylum in Madison for lunch, had their Scotch Ale. One of the best Scotch Ales that I have tasted and I love Scotch Ales, so I bought a growler.

After that, we toured the New Glarus Brewery. It was OK, a pretty cool place, but the tour was self guided and beer wasn't free. I bought some new New Glarus brews there, that I hadn't seen before. Something called Edel Pils, a Hefeweisen, 2 more that I can't remember, and a couple 20 year anniversary Strong Ales. Haven't tried any of these yet, though.

While there, I also tried a Sprecher Double IPA, at the recommendation of my girlfriend's uncle, who is very big into beer. I tried it because I have started to like hoppier beers, so now I'm trying more of them. Bad idea. I have no doubt that this is a good beer for people that like this kind of thing, but my god, I have never tried something so insanely hoppy. Unfortunately, I didn't get a pint of it, I got it in a liter mug. Don't worry, I didn't waste any beer, I sucked it up and drank the whole **** thing.

Also tried:
Wisconsinite, not sure who makes it, but it tasted like a hefe, and it tasted good
Sprecher Abbey Trippel, Excellent, in my opinion, but I really like Belgian style Trippels
New Glarus Totally Naked, very light, very refreshing, excellent hot humid summer day beer
Founders All-day IPA, this is one of those IPA's that I tried, because I'm starting to get a taste for this kind of beer. I thought this one was very well done. Liked it alot.

Also picked up a 4 pack of Sprecher Hard Root Beer, which is amazingly good, if you like Root Beer.

The Hard Root Beer is very dangerous. Doesn't taste like alcohol at all. It tastes exactly like their root beer.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

The Founders' Rubaeus is excellent. I hope they keep this, and don't bother with the Cerise any more.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Finally gave in to the ads aired during hockey season and tried the "Big House Bourbon", apparently a product of the same folks that make the "Cupcake" line of wines that my parents sometimes drink when they're feeling cheap. Grabbed it mostly because it was $20, and I didn't feel like spending $Texas on whiskey this weekend.

For the cost of an Ol' Hickory, I was not expecting something any better than Wild Turkey or Beam Black, and was pleasantly surprised. If you enjoy a good rye whiskey, seriously seek this out, it's got a great rye bite and is not overly harsh. It's got such a strong floral, bitter rye flavor, I'm not sure how they achieved it and still met the "bourbon" requirements.

Also, the checkout guy was hilarious. You know how most supermarkets put an ink squirter device on the top of any hard liquor that costs more than $10? "Oooh, cap tonight, huh?" he says, with a hint of incredulousness in his voice, no doubt looking at my babyface and thinking I was a prime fake ID candidate. "Yep, I don't drink cheap", I tell him. He checks my ID and my face, three times over. "Hmm...12/28/86...OK, sure". Continues eyeing me suspiciously all the way out the door.

The funniest part is that Michigan has one of the tougher IDs to fake nationwide.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

New stuff tried:

Dirty Blonde Chocolate Ale: Yes, this is a pale ale, flavored with chocolate. On the can it says it is brewed with chocolate syrup and cocoa nibs. I really didn't know what to expect with this one, but it sounded interesting enough to get me to buy it. It is made by some brewer in Iowa, the Quad Cities area, I believe, but I don't remember the name. Overall....it was very tasty. Surprisingly good. It had a very smooth, milk chocolatey flavor that meshed very well with the pale ale flavor. If you can find it, I'd say give it a try.

Schell's Shocked Grapefruit: Another crazy beer that I saw and decided I just had to see what it was. This stuff tastes like Squirt, no kidding. I liked it, but I don't think I could drink more than 1 or 2 cans in a sitting. If you want something different, and like a refreshing, citrusy type of beer, this is pretty good, for what it is.

New Glarus 20th Anniversary Strong Ale: Holy ****.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Recent Beers:

Leinie's Sunset Wheat. I've had it before... is it just me or are Leinie's beers starting to taste a little thinner/more watered down than they used to? The flavor was fine enough (and the name is also the perfect time of when to enjoy one), but it just didn't have enough body to it, at least compared to what I thought it tasted like before.

Leine's Canoe Paddler: A rye/kolsch beer. The rye gives it a nice sharpness. Sort of a classic Leinie's beer: not great, but certainly good enough.

New Glarus Edel Pils: A very good pilsner, a little more floral than others, but very nice.

König Pilsener: I probably liked the New Glarus better, but this one had an interesting sour taste to it (not like it was skunky, more like it was citrus-y where the New Glarus was floral). Middle of the road, in my book.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Realized I tried more beers than I originaly posted about:

New Glarus IIPA: I haven't really liked bitter beers, but I am starting to get a taste for them. The double IPAs are still too much for me, and this one was just over the edge of being too bitter. It wasn't bad, but I prefer my beer less hoppy than this one.

New Glarus Berliner Weiss: This was very interesting. I didn't know what to expect. It is like a sour beer, and I really enjoyed it. It is different from regular beer, and it may not be for everyone, but I thought it was good.

Although I liked the Cerise, I just tried the Rubaeus last weekend and it was absolutely amazing. Everything that I was hoping for.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Leinie's Orange Shandy: I don't give a **** what you people think. This is some dangerously good beer.

I agree with all of the above (also tried them).

It's not too raspberry-ish, is it? That's the problem I have with Leine's Berry Weiss - after a whole bottle, it's too sweet. I liked the Cerise too, will have to look for the Rubaeus.

Speaking of fruity beers, New Glarus' Serendipity is really good.

It's really close to lambic-taste.

Why you should be drinking more whiskey...
