Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

My recap of the game is up on USCHO at this point.

Perhaps the most interesting quote I got from Jack was his reflection on the status of the lines. The gist of it is as follows:
--Bonino and Trivino are #1 and #2 centers.
--Connolly and Zach Cohen will be LWs on the top two lines, but not necessarily in that order.
--Everything else is up for grabs, with "a lot of ice time to be won and lost in the next few games.
--My sense is that Saponari, Gilroy, and Chiasson are the leading contenders to play RW on the top two lines, but Pereira can't be ruled out either.
--I'm sure that both Saponari brothers will be in the lineup next weekend.
--Of the 15 forwards, my guess is that it will be hard to crack the lineup once the season starts. Beyond that, I think that Chiasson will be a fixture in the lineup but that the other three freshman, Glass, and Victor Saponari will be rotated to complete the final three forward slots. Glass probably has the initial edge there, but Courtnall's physical play may make him a good fourth-line guy. Counting Gaudet, there are basically six forwards fighting for three lineup slots. Should be interesting.

Otherwise, all three freshman d-men look like they can play. I think Escobedo and Nicastro have the edge right now, but the three of them also may rotate for a while.

Colby Cohen and Rollheiser apparently have minor injuries but are expected to play next week. The Saponaris had a death in the family and were away for a few days, leading to them sitting out on Saturday.

Just to add to some of this:

Parker said that Pereira "knows he’s going to be on the first three lines, but he’d like to be on the first two". This leads me to believe that Gilroy is the 4th-line RW at this point, VinSap's the 1st-line RW and Pereira and Chiasson are competing for 2nd-line RW.

I think the three forwards on the outside looking in right now are VicSap, Gaudet and Santana.

All three freshmen D looked very good last night. I'd expect some sort of rotation between the three to start the season.

Colby was given an extra week to recover from his offseason hip surgery. "Could've played this week," according to Parker. Rollie apparently suffered some sort of leg injury in practice this week. Not believed to be anything serious.

Not sure who's responsible for the national anthem debacle. Wasn't brought up during Parker's interview (I wasn't even thinking about it, to be honest).

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

I agree about the national anthem comments... terrible, terrible mistake (I assume and hope it was a mistake). I noticed it right away and my thoughts were "come on BU, we should be much better than that". To me it came off as totally classless and disrespectful.

On the game:
-I was surprised to see Gilroy on the first line... although as someone mentioned he probably subbed in there with Saponari out (rather than reshuffle all the lines)
-Overall some solid play and speed, a bit sloppy and not too crisp at times, but hopefully that will all get cleaned up as they get some more ice time together.
-Was Krauss screened on that first goal? I couldn't tell, and since Agganis does not show replays of the opposing teams goals, I never got a second look.
-St FX was not a bad team. Big and strong, but definatly lacked the star power and speed that some of the hockey east teams will have (which makes sense as most of those guys are back in school after a stint in the major juniors and have decided a pro career is not in the cards). Their goalie was very solid.

Misc:
-The hot dogs were as bad as ever.
-Why on earth don't they add two more ice cream stands?
-I noticed the band played Livin on a Prayer as the first song after the halfway point of the game... is that the timing that they always play it and that tradition has bypassed me for the past few years?

As far as I could tell, Kraus was not screened on the first goal. He simply didn't go post-to-post fast enough to get his pad there.

"Whoooaaaa, we're halfway there."

And another thing about the band: Did anyone else notice they were off on timing a few times during the night? They had the drum corps there, which they didn't have last year, so I'm pretty sure that added to the confusion. Were they there only to perform in between the 2nd and 3rd periods or are they going to be a fixture at games from now on?

IIRC it's usually as close to the midway point in the game as BDCP can get it.

Can someone comment on Gryba's play? I wasn't there, but my roommate said he looked as good as ever last night...thoughts?

I would agree with that. He was a defensive stalwart just like he was most of last year. He had several big, CLEAN hits, including one in the corner where he had the guy wondering what day it was. And he jumped up on the rush a couple times and saw some PP time as well. On the PP, it was clear that he just wanted to tee up the slapper. Shot into a couple of bodies when he should've held the puck or passed it off, but other than that, he looked very good.

  • Anyone else wonder how mookie notices all the things he does at a game?

Always.

Drum line won't be at games in the future but the enlarged size of the band should be around for at least a bit... Parks said he was chalking it up to winning a National Championship and that we'll see how long some of them stick around. Any confusion/timing just goes to people learning the ropes... Playing a hockey game isn't the easiest thing and can't really be rehearsed for that well so think about it this way:

The team has kinks to work out.
The band has kinks to work out.
The fans have kinks to work out.

Gryba: All around solid/physical/stellar play with just one or two mistakes... so very Gryba I thought.

The quality's not the greatest and it looks like that, but I think it actually bounced off Kraus'shoulder then came out, hit his stick and then might have been tapped in.

This is what I remember thinking from my seat in 108. Also we should feel fortunate about the play in overtime when Kraus fell on his butt for about six seconds and didn't get up... the puck almost found the back of the net about four times there.

I'm surprised Megan's slap shot from distance isn't getting more credit... thing was an absolute bullet and very CC-esque. Also to reiterate some others and the poll on the BHB, Ben Rosen seemed very impressive last night. Had a great individual move and seemed to exhibit all around intelligent play.

Still waiting for news about the Canadian National Anthem...

  • Hoping there will be some suitable replacements for matriculated entertainers in 118- manic dancing and screaming encouraged. We noted a couple of contenders, but we'll have to see some consistency.

At least one of those that has gone is going to be relatively impossible to replace...

Good to know. I was just thinking the other day, who on this team takes slapshots anymore besides Colby? PMac and Yip had laser slapshots, but I rarely saw any of the returning forwards opt for a slapshot. Shattenkirk and Warsofsky always think pass or wrist shot, and Gryba's slapshot is usually hard but just a bit wide. ;)

Oh, and I think we also all forgot that he almost scored last night! There was a scrum in front of the net and the puck came out right on to his stick... he took a shot, not sure what happened though it was at the 118 side of the arena at that point.

Needless to say there were plenty of yells of "GRYBA GOAL!" from 108.

I'm pretty sure he put it right in the goalie's chest.

BU HOCKEY BOOK NOW IN PRINT
Burn The Boats Chronicles Seven-Championship Season

Brookline, MA – Mosaic Eye Publishing is pleased to announce the publication of Burn The Boats: A Seven-Championship Season for Boston University by Hockey by US College Hockey Online senior writer Scott Weighart.

With in-depth reporting of events both on and off the ice, the book chronicles all of the key events from the last loss of the disappointing 2007-08 season through the celebratory aftermath following the Terriers’ astonishing comeback win in the 2009 national championship game.

The book is 240 pages, including a 16-page spread of glossy color photos by Gil Talbot, Dominick Reuter, and Josh Gibney. In addition to recapping all of the season’s high-stakes games in detail, the book features the fruits of numerous in-depth, exclusive interviews that Weighart conducted with the coaches and players after the season ended. The result is a book that features many now-it-can-be-told stories that were not revealed to the media during the season. Readers will learn about:

• how two players came within hours of being thrown off the team during the offseason, only to have the team captains intervene on their behalf

• the many ways in which the players and coaches raised the bar during the offseason

• life in the locker room, including accounts of the various personalities on the team

• numerous moments of truth that happened off the ice during the season, including Matt Gilroy getting himself thrown out of practice—apparently on purpose

• an exciting recap of what all the BU players and coaches were thinking and doing through the last several minutes of the most exciting comeback in the history of the NCAA championship game

… and much more.

Available at a price of $17, the book initially will be available for purchase through mail order at www.buhockeybook.com as well as at Agganis Arena.

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this...anyone else notice Jim Pryor's major flub on announcing the national anthem singer? "So and so...a senior in the Boston College College of Fine Arts"

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

and since nobody else mentioned this, i'll add it (;) ).

after the game, bonino came off the line and was the first to head into the locker. he had his helmet off as his stepped onto the runway. crisco was a couple behind him and said something toward the bench and lifted his left hand with stick and kinda turned.... i assumed he was asking if anyone was going to follow John and Matt last year, saluting the crowd.

again, not your recently graduated brother's terriers.

(thanks for the link Scott. i just ordered one. hope it gets here so soon. i'll have it read before saturday. )

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

Just read the excerpt. How long until Gilroy can coach the Terriers?

quite some time.

i caught the opener (they were playing my pens). matt was on the ice A LOT. played very well. it was funny that he made a couple mistakes (bad clear attempt. pass from the right point to the left point that went out of the zone.) as i noticed i laughed that i didn't see him make any mistakes at all last season (obviously a warped memory on my part, but i'm sticking with it :p ) and it must be the speed of the professional game that he needs to get used to.
