Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

The radio guy tonight for WTBU has a little troubling pronouncing Chiasson.

Alright... post game time

Loved the shots on goal, thought the defense was great and Adam was Adam. Seemed like the freshman still need some adapting to the offense (lots of missed passes). The PK looked great again, though I can't shake the feeling we were sending them out there way to often.

Pretty frustrating to tie this game, but I didn't see for reason to panic.

Alright, someone smarter than me... GO!

P.S. seems like Hockey East in general had trouble tonight...

i'll channel Bomber...

BU Hockey: Not your father's terriers (er, even your recently graduated brother's terriers)

......tonight was probably both the best and worst outcome imaginable.-----

-i thought the defense had a strong game. i liked all three freshmen. rosen had that "i'm gonna hip check you, oh-wait, i'll just skate under you and steal the puck and turn up ice" move that was beautiful. not big (though playing with eric that may alter perspectives a bit). nicastro though does look big out there. poised. escobedo had one iffy moment, but played strong every other minute. i could live with these six (i would seriously consider playing ccohen at fwd).

-trivino is gonna score 20 this year. he grew. stronger on the skates. more confident. lot to like.

-big game by megan. liked everything i saw.

-other freshman forwards played well.

-nice to see bulldog is the same old bulldog.
:D

-----however.....

-the final 40 faceoffs went 31-9 in favor of the X-men.

-there is no way that any of matt/mccarthy/strait take a hooking minor at center ice with a 2-1 lead and 2 minutes left.

-kgilroy has to be ready. too many missed chances when the chance was there.

-skill level isn't what it was (though they may think otherwise). yes there were 100 sog, but all of them were in the goalies belly.

-crisco needs to make a pass as though he wants it to get to the person he is intending it reach. i lost count of all the times he half-azzed a pass that was able to be deflected or stolen or knocked away. lazy.

-too many "employee #6 all star" passes.

-where's popko?!?!

-and WHO IN THE HELL TAKES A CENTER ICE HOOKING PENALTY WITH TWO MINUTES LEFT IN THE GAME HOLDING A ONE GOAL LEAD?!?!?!?!

-----------------HAA.........

-anyone order nachos?!?! there were seriously 15 chips in each bowl. i laughed and ask the girl if that was a 'small'. she giggled an embarrassed laugh and dumped another bowl in my tray. it was still well less that the usual amount you've come to expect.

-nice to see students there while the school is obviously on break... since the back end food stands were closed  .

-we replaced the ice cream next to the men's room corner with a beer stand???

-and the early renewal list is somewhat incomplete. my name was missing. the girl gave me a slip with email instructions...OFF OF A STACK OF NEAR 100 SIMILAR SLIPS. (gee, did someone realize a f'up was occurring??)

.............................................

we know that we can tie a team of big, under talented, overaged canadians. tonight merrimack college and the university of maine-orono sleep well.

..............................................

i don't exactly have a good feeling about the 09-10 season.

-Shots on goal were a great plus. I don't think we can point to the lack of finishers on this team because of this game; Perricone had what looked like a great game

-The passes were probably the worst part of the game. They really broke up what looked like a lot of smooth moving plays and scoring chances.

-Loved the physicality from Courtnall

-Gilroy seemed to be dragging the top line down a bit. He couldn't really work in the corners like the the others.

-I hate to do it, but I think Kraus can be pinned for the loss. The first goal was an easy shot; low, on the ice shot with no screen. He just didn't move post-to-post fast enough. Millan makes that save.

-Anybody else love Millan's new pads? Why didn't anyone think of a "B" and a "U" on each pad before?

-Lowlight of the night: Me missing all the shots for season tickets. Shame.

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

Hmm? I'm out of the loop on this I guess.

chassion got control of the puck in the right wing circle in the middle of the 3rd and skated into the slot on his forehand ready to shoot. warsofsky came streaking in and yelled his name twice, L-O-U-D.

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

oh, and did anyone else notice the new location of the banners?

the ecac banners were moved over sections 104-105. ncaa over the south goal with #24. hea tournament over the north goal. beanpot over 102. i am guessing the final four and hea regular season will be in the beanpot area?!?!

the ncaa banner is there now... but rolled up and on the catwalk, waiting to drop.

Thanks for the reports guys. I'm guessing that Vinny will take the spot Gilroy occupied normally. He's played with Bonino on the PP and was on a line with Connolly plenty last year, so they should hopefully click if they do form the top line.

Kraus probably should have stopped those two goals, but it's not too surprising. He only played 3 times before, and was jittery in those games. He never got any more experience, and hasn't played in a game since Feb 08. I think Millan/Rollie will definitely be the starting tandem, but if there is mop up duty (there really wasn't any last year) he'll get time, and hopefully eventually settle down and just play the way he can if ever called upon for some reason.

Also, something to quell any unfounded worries. This was the first exhibition game, but it was also the first day of official practice. Most of the work so far that the team has been doing was focused on getting in hockey shape, etc. Tonight was just the start of building of chemistry and Parker's attempts to find linemates that complement each other's game. The improvement we see one week from now should let us now how the trend is going, though.

St. Francis' Coach On the non-playing of the Canadian national anthem

"I can’t say it’s disrespect because this a very, very classy organization. I’m sure it was just a miscue on someone’s behalf. There were a few guys looking back at me, saying, ‘What’s going on here?’ And I just said, ‘Just don’t worry about it, guys. Just play the game.’ Then Coach Jack sent his captain over to explain what had happened. Those types of things happen. Of course we would’ve liked to hear the anthem, but I know a classy guy like Jack Parker’s not gonna do that purposely."

So does anyone know the story?

Compliments on the blog... seems like it will be an amazing new source of information, keep up the good work!

Indeed. I used it to keep up on the Bruins' first game too. Great job.

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

I think part of the problem tonight, compounding the fact that it was the first game of the season, was just that it was the first game back on the ice after winning a national championship. These guys just have to realize they aren't that team anymore. They gotta forge their own identity. It seemed like they were maybe trying just a little too hard at times. I was thinking about it, it's going to be a pretty hard coaching job but Parker's going to have to get them to forget about last year and play within themselves. A little more carefully and defensive, and less up and down and freewheeling.

With that being said, I did like a few things. Gilroy on the first line is an absolutely genious move. Who suggested that one earlier this week? Connoly looked about twice as fast compared to last year, as hard as that is to believe. Trivino looked a little better but we're still gonna need more from him. Bonino and Shattenkirk looked confident. Nicastro looked good.

Other than that, I didn't like much. I thought Courtnall and Chiasson were completely lost sometimes. I'm sure that will change with some actual practice. Megan, Rosen and Escobedo didn't do anything good, but they didn't do anything really bad. Minor mistakes and misplays, but again, first game. Santana might have actually been the freshman forward who messed up the least. Krause was whatever. 3rd string goalie, so it doesn't matter.

I think I like a 4th line of Glass, Popko and Pereira. They were kind of non-existent tonight too, but I'm sure that line will be sticking together. Gaudet didn't show me anything. Neither did Z. Cohen. Neither did Millan for that matter, but at least he didn't let in any soft ones.

Was Colby Cohen still recovering? Where was Rollheiser?

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

I noticed the same thing. I couldn't tell if he'd added muscle (I assume there's no way the coaching staff would let him not be on a strict weight routine over the summer) but he definitely looked taller. At first maybe I thought it was just the difference in where my seats are this year, but he's gotta be an extra 2-3 inches bigger than last year.

This is important to keep in mind. They looked very disorganized tonight and seemed to not know where their teammates were or would be. The lines tonight were a complete 180 from what they were last year so that has to account for some of the sloppy passing and missed opportunities. Kevin Gilroy is absolutely not a first liner, the only two guys on the same line who'd ever played together at any length were popko and periera. There is something to be said here for the absence of Colby and Vinny. Millan looked fairly good, though mostly untested. Kraus was Kraus (loved the Kraus In The Haus sign) I have no idea what happened on the second goal and it seemed like the X guy didn't either because he and everyone turned one way and the puck went the other back into the net. The only real conclusions that I would draw for tonight are we are very big, we have a lot of speed, but we need to work on finishing and taking quality shots not just hacks right into the chest. The biggest thing to look for is how much improvement is there next Saturday and the following Friday to see whether this game was just an aberration due to scratched players and lack of practice or if we have some legitimate holes this year.

Parker: Our coaching staff, the first thing we said when we went into the dressing room, ‘Best player on the ice –– Zach Cohen. Best player on the ice –– Zach Cohen.’ He played extremely well."

Gaudet didn't show me anything. Neither did Z. Cohen.

What game were you watching?

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

Just some of my thoughts:

Freshmen:
Although Chiasson looked lost at times, I thought he remained physical, and was willing to battle it out along the boards. He'll def. need to jack up his reading of the ncaa game...that should come with more time..

Megan and Courtnall - thought courtnall played pretty physical as well, and thought he exhibited some speed breaking through the neutral zone when with the puck. I think it was Megan who shot a ROCKET from 5 feet inside the blue line late in the 2nd? but then again, we almost had 55 shots, who's countin...
Santana - my observation here is obviously premature, but I thought he was in the right places at the right times, but I think he'll surely need to sharpen up his technical skill on the puck. Certainly could've been first-game jitters, but the few moments he had the puck, he looked quite tentative.

Nicastro, Rosen, Escobedo - I thought their overall gap control was pretty solid. Earlier in the game, Rosen committed early to some loose pucks along the sideboards, and from what I saw, against a quicker forward, he would've been beat. Nicastro was involved in some big hits and a few post-whistle scuffles, other players had to pull him away - I like the grit. Escobedo looks all right along the boards, breakout passing should get better. Seemed like he knew where to be...

just some comments about some of the rest:
Pereira - we all know he's quick and fiery, but he looked faaast. as usual, wasn't afraid to carry the puck to gain the zone against much bigger guys.

Gilroy - as already mentioned, he doesn't look quite up to 1st line, YET. Had he kept his stick on the ice more often when approaching goal, he could've certainly created more chances. that could be said of everyone as well.

ZCo - looked like the absolute bruiser - he must've laid out 4-5 guys, superman style, parallel to the sheet. hard to imagine, but his hustle looks even better (given the talent of our opposition).

Bonino - this game was def. a "feeling out" of teammates for him. It seemed as if he was really treating this as an exhibition, played hard, but no way did he "burn his boat" trying to force and create things. Obviously not the case with guys trying to win playing time.

Millan - those new pads are too gorgeous and pristine. I'd hate to see them that clean by the time ND comes to town.

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

My recap of the game is up on USCHO at this point.

Perhaps the most interesting quote I got from Jack was his reflection on the status of the lines. The gist of it is as follows:
--Bonino and Trivino are #1 and #2 centers.
--Connolly and Zach Cohen will be LWs on the top two lines, but not necessarily in that order.
--Everything else is up for grabs, with "a lot of ice time to be won and lost in the next few games.
--My sense is that Saponari, Gilroy, and Chiasson are the leading contenders to play RW on the top two lines, but Pereira can't be ruled out either.
--I'm sure that both Saponari brothers will be in the lineup next weekend.
--Of the 15 forwards, my guess is that it will be hard to crack the lineup once the season starts. Beyond that, I think that Chiasson will be a fixture in the lineup but that the other three freshman, Glass, and Victor Saponari will be rotated to complete the final three forward slots. Glass probably has the initial edge there, but Courtnall's physical play may make him a good fourth-line guy. Counting Gaudet, there are basically six forwards fighting for three lineup slots. Should be interesting.

Otherwise, all three freshman d-men look like they can play. I think Escobedo and Nicastro have the edge right now, but the three of them also may rotate for a while.

Colby Cohen and Rollheiser apparently have minor injuries but are expected to play next week. The Saponaris had a death in the family and were away for a few days, leading to them sitting out on Saturday.

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

  • Horrible mistake to omit the Canadian National Anthem. There should be an official letter of apology on the way StFX. I'd like to know who is responsible for that. Until told otherwise, I'm going with Agganis; that's always the safe bet.

  • Hot dogs are even worse than last year, possibly they are from last year. Simply unbelievable that they can't get this right.

  • The ice cream situation is again pathetic. One stand serving ice cream to order. Someone should tell them these aren't rib eye steaks they are serving. How difficult would it be to scoop one of the four flavors into a cup ahead of time? Why not just sell sport bars and hoodsie cups? Why do they do this to me? The tiny dipping dots, or whatever they are called, are a monumental ripoff- $4.50 for about four spoonfuls.
  • I didn't get a chance to look closely, but was there any bunting or recognition of the NC anywhere at Agganis, inside or outside? Would they wait until next week or the official opener?

  • Nice showing by the students last night. How many knew it was an exhibition game?

  • Hoping there will be some suitable replacements for matriculated entertainers in 118- manic dancing and screaming encouraged. We noted a couple of contenders, but we'll have to see some consistency.

  • I thought Kraus looked much more fluid than the last time we saw him. Still without the movement of either Millan or Rollheiser, but I might not be petrified if he got into a game.

  • Loved that move by Rosen in the 3rd.

  • I thought Escobedo looked pretty good among the freshmen. Santana not the smoothest skater out there...

  • Perriera is fun to watch (loved when he ducked a check along the boards twice in one shift), but his hockey IQ must be pretty low. Seems like he only knows to go from point A to point B as fast as he can. He might have scored if he slowed it down a tad and shot earlier on his little break away instead of running full speed into the goalie.

  • Anyone else wonder how mookie notices all the things he does at a game?
