Re: Off Season Topic: Hockey Terminology

Wow, that's a long time ago but it reminds me that I think I still have a pair of those in an old duffel bag in the basement!
Me too, as a matter of fact.

What do you figure they're worth on ebay???
If you have reasonably good proof they were game-worn by one of the Flyers or Whalers, they might be worth something.

But our sweaty old gear? Probably not so much. But hey, it only takes one buyer; you never know!

You may regret having started this thread...looks like you created a career for yourself until October.

Re: Off Season Topic: Hockey Terminology

Grocery Stick (my new favourite)!!!

FYI...a grocery stick is the divider used at check out lanes to divide your groceries from the guy behind you. In hockey, if you're a grocery stick, you sit on the bench, rarely see the ice and divide the forwards from the defence....priceless!!

Let's hear some more definitions of some of these more rare beauties!!

Re: Off Season Topic: Hockey Terminology

Victory lap - Skate around the ice with a tournament trophy

Re: Off Season Topic: Hockey Terminology

The sayings are:

"Tape to Tape" (as opposed to "tape to tape pass")
"Pond Hockey" (as opposed to "pond")
"The Gordie Howe" (as opposed to "The Gordie Howe Hatrick"
"No FLow" and "Good Flow" (as opposed to just "Flow" ... That one is more for "The Flower", that Habs Icon)

Here is one: "Playoff Beard"

Several basic ones not on the list yet.... "HIT'M" , "Go Hard" , "Trap" , "The Trap" , "Skate", "Hit the Iron", "Hockey Smile"

Why do you have the urge to correct everyone all the time? And, to further aggravate you, you are not correct with some of your sayings. It is most definitely a "tape to tape pass", and a "Gordie Howe hattrick"

Re: Off Season Topic: Hockey Terminology

Victory lap - Skate around the ice with a tournament trophy

This isn't really a hockey term. It's borrowed from racing and dates back, with obvious language differences, at least to chariot racing in the Roman Empire.

And a bunch of the others were taken from soccer.

Some good ones there, but Jill? A few others above your post that I'm not including for reasons mentioned or until I have some clarification as to what they mean! But if you feel strongly about it, make your case! :) I'm also adding 'blind pass', 'drop pass', 'two line pass' (does any league still enforce this?) and 'sick (move)'.

Re: Off Season Topic: Hockey Terminology

More applicable to men's hockey…

Yard Sale – Getting hit so hard your gloves and stick go flying.

Re: Off Season Topic: Hockey Terminology

. . . and 'sick (move)'.

This is the kind of thing I'm wondering about. "Sick" isn't any more a hockey term than "great" is. It's an adjective in general usage that can be applied to the word "pass" much like it can be applied to any other noun that can be categorized by quality. If the dictionary is going to be this broad, you might as well just include the whole OED.

Blame the delta's on regionality. Named them as I'm used to hearing them.

One not yet on the list...... "Busy Stick"

Good point, and I questioned whether I should put it on. Off it goes...
