Last time I was in Arizona, I almost killed my wife (then fiancee)...of course I'm sure the fact that we were there to take the bar exam had nothing to do with that at all.

This is a poor argument. In Arizona the odds are greater that you'll be killed by your spouse than by a rattlesnake*. People are still wary of rattlesnakes.

(* This is a true fun fact, brought to my attention by my wife, since we are going to Tucson for vacation. Or perhaps she was sending a different message.)

Looking forward to it. The photos I've seen of the city (and the thunderheads) are impressive.

The theory is if I can stand Tucson in August the rest of the year will be a breeze, and we'll consider moving. She really misses the desert.

That Haboob dust storm (which we missed as we were camping up on the North Rim) was really something. It left more dust on my patios, in my garage, etc. than any I've seen in my over 20 years in Arizona. We really haven't had many substantive dust storms roll through for a number of years, so I think some newcomers to Phoenix were pretty freaked out.

Tucson is a lot better than Phoenix tempwise, as it's a little bit cooler, and it cools down a lot more at night in the middle of the summer than Phoenix does. Hey, if you end up in Tucson, you'll get more of a front row view of the border stuff.

And I'm saying that logic makes no sense.

Just because both guns and automobiles are dangerous in different ways...why is it that limiting danger from at least one source is bad?

The presence of one, guns, adds no benefit to greater society. On the other hand, automobiles are arguably the most valuable tool man has. There are plenty of grounds to treat them differently. Guns on the street add danger with no benefits.

I'm not racist. I'm an admirer of President Obama. I am NOT posting the following to start an argument about how all Tea Partiers are, or are not, racists. Having said that, the following quote seems to perfectly illustrate what I see as a major shortcoming of "progressive" thought on issues of race:

He is a president of mixed race. So I believe he is about the same things that I am. You cannot look at a person and judge him or her by the color of their skin.

My feeling is that here lies the great divide, and that a typical liberal will not see any contradiction. To paraphrase, "We are all the same... I wish you 'others' could understand that but of course you can't because you're not like us but trust me, we're the same."
There is no possible escape from this way of thinking.

I don't think the person saying that has anything to do with them being liberal, it just has to do with them being or saying something dumb. The irony is obvious. I really don't understand why you would think a liberal wouldn't see it. I remember a conversation I had with a conservative friend, an intelligent guy, which came down to him saying, "conservatives see things logically while liberals see them emotionally." The idea that people really think "my side's brain patterns are different from the other side's" really says something about the lengths we go to justify our own opinions.

BTW, speaking as a card-carrying liberal, the King family are grifters. They have about the same moral standing as the Gandhi family. Great pacifist leaders make lousy fathers. Or maybe they just were on the road too much.

My wife has discovered Fox News, and she was just commenting the other night, "are these people kidding? It's not just that it's terrible logic -- there's no logic at all, no linkage between A and B, they're just repackaging their axioms." From the few times I have been stuck listening to talk radio in coworkers' vehicles it's amazed me that otherwise fairly intelligent, albeit not particularly educated, people can't spot the freshman logic errors or juvenile rhetorical tricks in virtually every argument those blowhards make.

My impression is that shoddy thinking is common, we discount it when it's our side and overestimate it when it's the other side.

Yeah, I tend to agree. These guys operate in a world where the money trucks back up to their front door the more provocative they can be. I don't get the appeal -- watching guys like Olbermann who on paper I agree with on 9 issues out of 10, I still don't find it satisfying or even remotely funny. Then again, whenever there's a trailer the biggest audience laugh dependably comes when somebody gets hit in the balls, so I may be out of touch with trends in popular entertainment.

Of course I haven't bothered to read anyone elses post but...

I fully understand and recognize that as a valid POV...however as with many things it is not always that simple.

The difference is that there is a large segment of the population that is both underprividged and for a variety of reasons, has little power to defend itself...that of the inner city. It just so happens that the inner city is largely black...and a relatively small population live outside of the city (at least in most states).

So when a black person says something like 'others don't understand our plight; please don't treat us differently'...its a bit different than when a affluent white guy from the burbs says 'blacks are different'.

All the talk about cities and poverty is beside the point. She didn't say he understands her because he's poor and from the inner city (it's obviously not true); she only said Obama understands her because he's of mixed race. Is that valid?

We've become a nation that increasingly focuses on the end result while caring less and less about the means employed to get there. It's very easy to overlook someone's lack of logic or whatever if they are pushing our side of issues and helps us get the end result we want. But, a focus on just getting the end result we want leads to a lot of very ugly process to get there and long term does not bring good end results.
