Re: Obama XXI: Kenyan Muslins are ruining this country!

I have always contended that if you put 30 male MENSA members in a room for 30 minutes you'll have a bunch of idiots at the end.
This is the principle behind Bright Hockey Center.

Still theoretical, since they haven't gotten to 30 fans yet.

Re: Obama XXI: Kenyan Muslins are ruining this country!

The protesters are twice as popular as Congress :p

Rasmussen Reports returns from the field with what I think is the first poll about Occupy Wall Street. The buried lede: At the moment, the protesters who've been mocked on CNN and Fox News, accused of class warfare by Mitt Romney, and handled delicately by the White House, have... decent favorable ratings.
Americans are divided on the protestors themselves. Thirty-three percent (33%) have a favorable opinion, 27% hold an unfavorable view, and a plurality of 40% have no opinion one way or the other. Fifty percent (50%) of Democrats have a favorable opinion while a plurality of Republicans (43%) say the opposite. Among those not affiliated with either major party, a solid plurality (45%) have no opinion. Most unaffiliateds are not following the story.
Will that number hold up as the movement gets more coverage? Who knows. It didn't hold up for the Tea Party. But one way of looking at this is that the Occupy Wall Street movement is more than twice as popular as Congress. Because of that low engagement number, it's technically more popular than the Tea Party. In an August Rasmussen poll, 43 percent of Americans considered "Tea Party" a negative label, and 29 percent considered it positive.

The message is more popular: Seventy-nine percent of Americans "agree with the statement that the 'The big banks got bailed out but the middle class got left behind.'" (The way I heard the chant on Friday: "Banks got bailed out, we got sold out.")

Re: Obama XXI: Kenyan Muslins are ruining this country!

They also have a much better positive/negative breakdown than the Tea Party.

A TP-OWS alliance would be a trip. Talk about terrifying both parties and the banksters. :)

Some bankers get it

Some On Wall Street Sympathize With Protesters | CBS reports that “many of those who work on Wall Street say they don’t take the protests personally” and “some even sympathize.” “It’s really incredible to me, the passion and conviction these people have,” said Lou Crossin, who works for a company that sells corporate governance research to large investors. “I don’t think these are violent people. They’re just standing up for their beliefs.”

But his colleagues don't seem to be worried

The really funny thing is that they really do think they're part of the 1%

I'm so sick of stupid people.
- President of the United States, showing the brilliant intellectual gifts that got every college student in the country to have his image tattooed in their armpits for the big homecoming party.

Michael thought it was a great speech.

If that's a real sign at a real brokerage:

(1) Somebody has a great sense of humor.

(2) That somebody is so very, very fired.

Re: Obama XXI: Kenyan Muslins are ruining this country!

they're laying the heat on that CBS reporter so I'd say Obama is feeling it

It is not directly analogous, of course. I say again, it's not directly analogous, but how long did Nixon take to dump Haldeman and Erlichmann? No doubt it's a little warm.

That's hilarious. But why do you say "they think they're part of"? Aren't the Wall St. bankers exactly the 1% that the protesters are targeting in their enraged covetousness?

The 1% don't work, why would they even step foot near Wall Street? What are you thinking?

I really don't get it. I thought "the 1%" are the people that aren't paying high enough taxes; the top 1% of wage earners we've been hearing so much about.
If it's not about the money, why are they on Wall St. at all? Isn't that what it symbolizes?

Look at some charts. Then come back and explain to everyone why were so much like 1929 while at the same time being so oppressive taxwise to the job creators. It's seems so counter intuitive to me. Still, I'm on that "don't tax job creators" bandwagon.

I'm not. I've been supporting higher taxes for many moons now.

The traders on Wall Street are probably part of the 5%, mostly part of the 10%. The people who OWN those firms are part of the 1%. Bud Fox and his co-workers were not in the 1%...Gordon Gekko was.

Yes! you got it. 1st demand is to make tax rates FAIR. 2nd-3rd demand is to have a robust and safe banking system but without all the socialized (taxpayer) risk.

1st demand should be repeal of 1997, 2003 capital gains tax reduction (or FAIR ordinary income rate) . HIGHEST 400 AGI earners in the country from current 18% back to 30% tax rate.

2nd demand should be the repeal of all the deregulation of the banking industry and split commercial from investment banks again. And let investment banks fail (or nationalize).

3rd demand should be to limit the derivatives market and demand transparency. CDS/CDO/MBS etc..

In 2005, the top 1 percent of filers derived 54 percent of their income from capital gains,

The top marginal tax rate on capital gains and dividend income thus stands at 15 percent, less than half the top tax rate on wages and salaries. An inevitable consequence of this is that the very highest-income filers — who derive a large fraction of their income from investments rather than wages and salaries — now pay tax at very low effective rates.

smart people have no place in OCCUPY WALL STREET. It's more fun when it's about destroying America and taking what's ours.

I think I'm with the unions on trade protectionism. Look how well Smoot Hawley worked out.
