In NYC, a district he carried by 11 points in '08. Certainly there were a lot of factors involved: Support for Israel, conservative Jews opposing Weprin on social matters, Mayor Koch, et al. But presidential unpopularity was a big part of it. Just a few months ago, anyone who predicted that little schmuck would be driven from office by a sex scandal and replaced by a Republican would have been a candidate for a Baker Act hearing (Florida law for involuntary committment).

I wouldn't say completely meaningless, but certainly a lot less meaningful than we're going to hear from a lot of folks. It's one small data point, but it's the only fresh data point of its sort, so it's going to get more attention than is warranted.

I wouldn't say completely meaningless, but certainly a lot less meaningful than we're going to hear from a lot of folks. It's one small data point, but it's the only fresh data point of its sort, so it's going to get more attention than is warranted.

There's a big media machine ready to make "sense" of data, so they pour anything they can into it and pronouncements come out the other side at the same high volume. GIGO. That's how you wind up with more media at the Iowa Straw Poll than voters.

IIRC, Dukakis led Bush by 6 or 7 points in late summer 1988. I'll follow the polls throughout, but I'll start taking them seriously 12 months from now.

I'll watch the economic metrics starting now, though. Polling is a trailing indicator.

It's a long tradition. From the 1900's through 40's Jewish intellectuals and opinion-makers were closely tied to European social and economic backgrounds that tended to be left-leaning. Jewish immigrants tended to be urban poor, a Dem lock. Then from the 1950's through the 70's Jews were aligned with blacks in liberal social movements like the voting rights and desegregation struggles -- this would have been regionally interesting but there really weren't any southeast Jews at the time so again they lined up solidly Dem.

Starting in the 1980's right wing Israeli politics began appealing to some Jews, and the GOP also inherited the disaffected Trotskyite cold war liberal Jews who had been driven out of the Democratic Party for being pathologically insane (these became the Neocons). Since then AIPAC has tried really hard to move the needle on Jewish support for the GOP, without a lot of success. Most Jews are socially liberal, suburban, tolerant, and educated -- not good hunting ground for the modern GOP.
