Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

Link seems to work now.

I'm all for self-made men. If you want to compensate for the lost revenues of the Bush tax cuts by increasing the estate tax, we can talk. :)

watch it, you're sounding conservative again. It's not lost revenue. The accepted terminology is that "we" (the federal government) need to "take back" the "giveaway to the rich".

Timely contribution to the discussion.

...I'd hate to see what it looks like going into 2011 with current unemployment and a rebounding stock market.

As I've said, I've always been a big believer in comparative advantage...that the US will excel where say India and China don't. And that will carry us through as our jobs shift to better, technology jobs.

But I'm beginning to believe that that theory is misleading based on where the US is coming in today. It appears that 100 blue collar jobs (worth $10 million) will be replaced with 10 cool entreprenuer jobs (worth $10 million) rather than 100 cool entreprenuer jobs worth ($30 million). So the jobs and therefore the money will shift from middle/lower class to very rich entreprenuers...as that's where the US has its competitive advantage vis a vis the rest of the world. As a result, expect this gap in these charts (and corresponding taxes) to grow indefinitely.

And the opposing accepted terminology is that the government is the enemy, when of course the government is just us.

The criminals always see the police as the enemy.

That stupid cs'ing gd basted is ruining my commute!!!!!!!! F him!!!!

You did it again! Or is this now deemed OK for liberals with Obama in office? I thought you're supposed to mutter something about a moneyed elite controlling our lives.

That feeling of cognitive dissonance you have when reality doesn't conform to your simplistic ideological model is called "growth." I'm glad you're venturing a little outside your comfort zone. Good for you! Among conservatives that already makes you an astronaut.

Next stage: maybe a book. Baby steps.

We don't all work on government contracts so the government is more of some people than others...but that wouldn't influence anybody's positions on anything.

Now that's more like it. :D This is the sort of discourse we've come to expect. No more of this straying from the talking points!

NPR CEO Vivian Schiller resigned. This surprises me; I didn't think anyone should be shocked by the revelation that NPR is run by liberals, less run them out for it.

The "we" card. Always the sign of a strong argument...

Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

Background on the NPR mess. Vivian may have been forced out after Ron's (no relation) ill-advised comments on the racism and gun-and-religion clinging of Republicans threatened NPR's continued public funding.
But it's sad. My dad taught at my HS, and I have very fond memories of being agreeably brainwashed every morning and afternoon on our long commute by NPR's left-wing propaganda. I still listen every day.

I can't stomach it. Not the bias (obviously) but the preciousness. My limit is about 5 minutes until I blindly punch the button screaming "if I ever met you I would stab you again and again and again!"

I do think that despite their obvious inclinations, NPR actually runs stories and reporting contrary to their policy preferences. That's something a lot of other presumptive "news" sources will never do.

Yes...and although there is some bent there, NPR often just shines its spotlight on liberal issues...and at its most extreme it takes a William F Buckley approach. But it really has never been a Fox, Rush, Coulter, Beck, etc kind of outlet that is incapable of dialog.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/41969508
Government payouts make up more than a third of total wages and salaries of the U.S. population ...

Even as the economy has recovered, social welfare benefits make up 35 percent of wages and salaries this year, up from 21 percent in 2000 and 10 percent in 1960.

This is completely unsustainable. Also, I would substitute handouts for "wages". Wages are the product of labor.

Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

Don't workers pay for those benefits? Last time I checked my paycheck is less because of Social Security, unemployment insurance, and Medicare.

Remember, it's theft. In a just society, the serfs just work till they drop.
