Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

Gridlock is our best hope, I would rather the partisan bickering actually prevent things not just make everyone look like schmucks.

As always, you can count on Jon Stewart to provide you with all the evidence you need to realize that they'll probably just go for the schmuck route.

"Call your congressman, and tell them they are just ****ing terrible!"

So Republicans wont support Health Care for the people at 9-11 and the Democrats are too stupid and afraid of their own shadow to let majority rule. Kill em all, let God sort it out...

Seriously, that video should **** every off. Weiner might act crazy but that is exactly what I would do, except I would be swearing and throwing stuff...or go back to the 1800s and challenge them all to friggin duels! What a bunch of *********s.

Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

Moreover, I don't really see you defending the proposition that US tax dollars should be used to train people for jobs overseas. So step up and do it ...

I already said I don't support the majority of foriegn aid programs.

But if you're going to do it...it should add some sort of value. It makes no sense to flush the money down some toilet and call it aid.

Don't get your panties in a wad, Sarah. Did you actually read the post, or the link? Perhaps you dropped your tofu and brie wrap into your Caribou decaf latte when you imagined someone may be taking your savior's administration to task for its policies. The USAID head is an Obama appointee, and I'm fully cognizant of the uses of "foreign aid", military and otherwise. So try to stay on task for once.

Um. You criticized Obama directly for funding job creation overseas. I replied by saying that the criticism was over the top as its just common foriegn aid of the nature we've been giving since WW II. To which you threw out a bunch of soft personal shots. And I'm not on task?

Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

Gridlock is our best hope,.

Its been our best hope for years and some of us have been praying for it. Its really unbelievable though, freakin' idiots can't get it together.

Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

Just watched Obama's appearance on the View. Thought he was pretty impressive on there..especially in response to Elisabeths questions.

Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.

Alexis de Tocqueville

Back then it took a while for quotes like this to travel the world...by the time it got to DC it was probably already true.

The government could more effectively stimulate the economy by letting the high-income tax cuts expire and using the money for aid to the states, extensions of unemployment insurance benefits and tax credits favoring job creation. Dollar for dollar, each of these measures would have about three times the impact on GDP as continuing the Bush tax cuts.

I wasn't aware that unemployment benefits or aid to states was part of the GDP calculation. He is the economist with a big think tank so I guess he would know; learn something new every day.

Further, it appears in #3 his position is if the government could make better use of your money then they are entitled to it. So, why don't they eliminate all debt and take a greater % of income from a greater % of people? Since he is willing to use CBO logic and extend it to the rest of his argument (#1), why not use the logic above and extend that as well?

This is classic "it is our money" propaganda. The Democrats have turned the whole story away from government waste and spending turned it into why the country has been hurt by some people being able to keep what they earn.

As we keep generating more population in the lower brackets, how long will it be before the number gets lowered to $150,000k? What is changing in the trend of government spending to make anyone think that won't be the next step? We're doing nothing to cut the rate of spending but doing a great job of positioning the argument to blame the wealthy and redistribute their money to provide more comfort for the masses.

It probably isn't. But as I posted here earlier, perhaps in response to one of your posts, for every dollar spent on unemployment benefits, it returns about a $1.90-something in GDP growth. People who are unemployed need to spend that money, and spend it now.

And who doesn't like a 100% return on their money?

Likewise, aid to states mean they won't have to lay off their workers, teachers, fire and police to balance their budgets. Fewer people out of work, fewer collecting unemployment, more spending money on rent, groceries, getting their cars fixed, you know, the stuff that runs our economy.

So our economy runs on taxes paid from one population and given to others in the form of government handouts?

I had a different understanding of what makes our economy work.

The problem is in the first paragraph. Its about spending.

Consumer confidence is back down and business is still not hiring...just look at recent unemployment numbers. In a normal economy, getting money moving is not a problem...then cut taxes, whatever. Unfortunately many events occurred between 2005-2007 that doomed the economy (I might argue as far back as 2003).

The theory of Keynesian economics on paper does seem like a bad approach. But once your faced with absolutely no spending by the private sector...and the danger of a serious crash as everything stalls out, then you begin to see the merits of somebody doing something to keep money moving. Spending then generates private income as money is spent in the private sector. This in turn generates income and and then govt tax revenue...it helps to aleviate deficit spending, the major problem that it creates. Its not socialism and its not rocket science either.

Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

Here's a bit of wisdom for those of you advocating federal aid to the states that can't properly budget at the expense of those that can: any federal money offered to the states would be borrowed, seeing that we are deeply in the red at the federal level as it is. That borrowed money doesn't materialize out of thin air: it has to come from someone or something - and in this case, it comes from investors who are buying the government's debt.

Because of the federal government's horrible spending over the years, our economy is going to be crippled for a long time and suffer lower growth rates than it might otherwise have had because so much money is tied up in financing the debt. Every dollar that goes to buy a T-bill offered up by Uncle Sam is a dollar that isn't going into private investment - you know, the area that actually generates jobs, tax revenue, and economic growth.

But by all means, continue advocating the redistribution of money from the productive to the unproductive. I can't see how that can possibly go wrong.

It almost sounds like you are saying unemployment benefits creates jobs.

In the end, its still a dollar borrowed... so the net effect is $0.90... is that better or worse than a dollar spent by the general public before the dollar was taken?

No, our economy runs on consumption, people(and corporations) spending money.

If people, and the corporations that you seem to believe are the saviors of our universe, aren't spending, then who will?

If the private corporations are the end-all be-all of capitalism, why aren't they doing everything they can to revitalize our economy? Instead, they're doing the opposite, cutting spending and laying off workers.

Tell them to get with the capitalist program, willya?

And BTW, what's your feelings about corporate welfare?

Yea, let's ignore the current economic crisis, and prolong it as long as possible, just to prevent some future hypothetical economic crisis from occurring.

Are you really this effin' stuipid?

You could make the case. Take the local neighborhood market that has to shut its ddors because no one can buy anything there anymore cause they doin't have money.

I reiterate, are you really this effin' stupid?

And the operative word was 'spent'; as in one dollar spent by the government..how many dollars does the government take in to spend 1?

As I've said before, if it was about getting money to people in need they'd make a stronger play for the wealthy to contribute directly to charities etc. We had all of that investigation about what % of money donated to the charities actually gets to needy people, too bad the government doesn't follow the same rules.

The wealthy should join forces and come up with a way to privatize help for the needy, get a higher % of aid to those who really need it and put that part of government out of business.

So, it's up to the worthless, inefficient government to get the wealthy to contribute more to charity?

Well, until the wealthy in your utopian universe do get together, or until you can convince private industry to start spending and hiring more, then the useless, inefficient government is all you've got.
