Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

You could make the case. Take the local neighborhood market that has to shut its ddors because no one can buy anything there anymore cause they doin't have money.

I could buy that to some degree... but not in totality and I don't think its a great policy for life because then you end up saying that society must subsist by taking money from one group and giving it to another... the subsidized society.

Fact of the matter is that inflation will have to kick in at some point as the demand for that item goes up. This would be the main argument against such a subsidized society... in the end you are chasing your own tail.

I reiterate, are you really this effin' stupid?

Are we learning to goose-step sideways today?

Clearly you're the dumb one if you think it's a good idea to hand money to states who have done nothing but waste theirs. Has it ever occurred to you that people in the states that have already done budget cuts and all the responsible things necessary to keep themselves afloat aren't going to be terribly fond of yet another federal handout at their expense?

And taking your point about unemployment benefits to its logical conclusion, well, let's just spend all federal dollars on unemployment benefits. After all, we're getting nearly $2 for every $1 in GDP, right? Sounds great, except for that pesky little problem of paying people indefinitely not to work - which is, you know, welfare.

Not socialism, my ***.

Who said totality? But economic crisis situations require such measures. When times are better, then you can do all the budget cutting and whatever else your conservative wet dreams are.

How have states wasted theirs? Perhaps you don't understand, but unlike the federal government, states, at least most of them, are required to have balanced budgets. When tax revenues fall through the bottom, as they have, they're forced to make drastic cutbacks in spending, which only exacerbates the revenue shortfalls.

And you know this how? I at least know that I'm always learning trying to winnow out what is bs and what isn't... "require" is such a strong word... its like you know this to be certain and I don't think there's any certainty to it at all.

You know, I haven't done a good orphan fire in awhile.

Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

You know how I know this healthcare bill was worthless? I'm no longer able to get reimbursed on my OTC meds (among other things) using my FSA.

Obama, this bill, and all of those who voted for it are a f*king joke.

Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

Wasteful spending = California.

Requiring a balanced budget doesn't stop legislatures from wasting taxpayer money - it simply requires the states to take in an amount equal to what they're throwing away - and in California's case, they have a shortfall of over $25 billion this year if the LA Times is to be believed.

Now, why'd you wingnuts recall the previous governor there?

And you thought Ahhh-nold was gonna be an improvement?

You get what you wish for.

BTW, this budget shortfall wouldn't have had anything to do with the total economic meltdown brought to you by George Bush and Co., would it?

yes, the imposition of an unsustainable morality system we call "progressive".

Didn't Obama vote for every budget Bush proposed?

And you thought Obama was going to be an improvement?

Re: Obama XIII: It's all Bush's fault.

What does a budget have to do with the economic meltdown caused by speculation and deregulation?

Anyway, I don't know. Why don't you educate me?

You're right, this is the worst time to cut spending. But states do waste money and blobs of it too. Just like my state and city.

I remember watching a California state legislature talk about how state spending has stayed flat for the last 2 years or actually went down a bit and the host never asked what happened in prior years before the housing meltdown.

I was laughing when she made that comment, our state legislator said the same thing with a straight face. sure the state spending has been flat for few years but increased 100-120% in the last 5 prior years. And every time we've a shortfall these bozos want to implement a revenue scheme (state income tax or sales tax) and unable to cut spending.

So balanced budget without cap on future spending tied to something inflation/growth/ criteria is better than nothing, but shown by my city and state they will spend (20-25%/yr) like crazy in good times and have to make painful cuts or raise revenue (taxes) at the worst economic cycle.

At least the state saved some oil royalty revenue when oil went from $30s to $80-140s.... even our state legislators couldn't spend it fast enough.

Yeah. Screw our kids. We'll be dead by the time they have to pay for our debts, why should we care? We're all about the now.

So why this sudden need to quit spending now? Why not ten years ago? 8? I didn't see you guys on here then sayiing the utmost pressing need of government was to cut spending. None of you were whining and complaining while Bush was running up the largest deficits in history

But suddenly, now that a Democrat is president, the one thing we have to do is cut spending, and drastically, and right now, if not yesterday. Thereby insuring that his presidency will be an utter failure, and republicans can get back into office. And get back to wasting trillions on wars and other crap that you wingnuts love.

It's the Repub modus operandi. Run up huge deficits, govern incompetently, make such a royal clusterf^&k of everything that it will take years and lots of money to fix, and then biitch and cry about how much money the Democrats are spending to fix it and how they haven't gotten it all done yesterday.

People have been saying this for years. Either you haven't listened or they were being drowned out.

The reason the calls for cuts have been so loud as of late are because government has been spending more and more under the past two administrations. Obama's spending may just be the straw that broke the camel's back.

Conservatives want to cut spending, not Republicans. Too few of the former, too many of the latter.

Spending needs to be cut. Specifically in wars. You'd think Obama would try to accomplish that.

If we want let our kids and their kids pay our debts, the least we could do is leave them some hard assets like the oil off shore and in Alaska.

If we're playing that game, why has the left gone silent now on the debt, when they were all over it during Bush's time in office?

Methinks your common sense logic is falling on deaf ears with that troll, but this is spot on.

The most idiotic refrain of all is "where where you when Bush was doing it" like he didn't have a 30% approval rating at the end of his Presidency. Fiscal conservatives were never fans of the vast majority of his fiscal policies.

Breaking with what you said to tangent from what I just said... one of the few things fiscal conservatives did agree with Bush on were the tax cuts - cuts which ultimately led to an increase in government revenues. Unfortunately, ramped up spending overshot those increased revenues by a significant margin. Obama's not only kicked spending into hyperdrive, he's pursuing a course of action which is going to send revenue through the floor, which will only increase the rate of borrowing.
