Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

I'm kind of on board with you here man, but:

1) People make mistakes in the heat of the moment and
2) Even if that's not a legitimate excuse, doesn't the road of respect go both ways?

Agree with number one. I mean, I'm not calling for impeachment or anything extreme here. I'm just saying it was just another childish moment from what seems to be a pretty childish administration.

On number two... the point is, I think, that the office of the President ought to be held to a higher standard.

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Clarence Thomas. need I say more?

Clarence Thomas was not one of the best choices for the Supreme Court at the time of his confirmation, it has nothing to do with the color of his skin.

You can argue due to his less than stellar qualifications compared to other nominees (he didn't finish anywhere near the top of his class, he didn't attend an Ivy League or Ivy League caliber college) that he got in because of his race. Ironically all he has ever done is complain about how he was mistreated due to his race, but then all he has done is bash African Americans, including members of his own family (in fact lying about their situations and bashing them to make his achievements seem even more amazing.)

Then when he was accused of sexual harassment he claimed it was racism, a high text lynching even though his accuser was black.

Claiming the Democrats were behind all these awful things and then at the same time saying it was Liberals is ignoring history entirely. The Democrats weren't always what we call modern liberals. The Republicans weren't always what we call modern liberals.

You want the best of both worlds. You want to claim conservatives of today are the great liberators of slaves and promoting good race relations.

And you want to claim liberals of today are the same scummy people who were the racists who believed slavery was moral.

Republicans of the Past =! Republicans of Today and definitely not the Conservatives of Today
Democrats of the Past =! Democrats of Today and definitely not the Liberals of Today.

I agree with you on this 100% and I don't think it can be stressed enough. The rush to justify or expatiate should be considered in light of the rush to demonize and excoriate from the other side. None of this takes place in a political vacuum. But at the end of the day, regardless of what some hatred-spewing talk radio personalities do to make their money, the EOP represents the head of state. Although it is an inherently political office, it also is our official representative. I remember wincing at the lack of class and professionalism of the immediate prior EOP, so I don't want to excuse the current one.

Part of the requirement of the office is having the grace to endure the posturers and clowns without becoming one. The Reagan office, for example, was a model of conducting official state business with great solemnity and class, even while they conducted political campaigning with a rapacity and ruthlessness perhaps not seen since the 19th century. Obama in sharp contrast has not done a good job with this. He often injects political barbs into what I would consider nationally-representative occasions and I do not like it one bit -- being on the "winning" side makes it no more palatable, and indeed twice as embarrassing. This was one of the things that made Cheney so grotesque, and to see it now continued, by people who ought to know better and who specifically promised to restore the dignity of the office, is maddeningly disappointing.

In other news, Patman and Red Cloud, you guys can stop calling Hawaii's records office now 50 times a day asking for a copy of Obama's birth certificate. The state just passed a law (signed by GOP Gov Lindle) allowing the office to ignore all requests of this nature. :D

Of course, I still say if either of you had jobs or girlfriends you wouldn't have so much free time on your hands to pursue such nonsense.

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

As I said before...who was it exactly who was supporting the ERA...I will give you a clue it wasnt the conservatives or the GOP. Wait...you do know what the ERA is right? ;)

Who supported Civil Rights? I will give you a clue, it wasnt the conservatives. :D

I seriously hope you are only pretending...even Glenn Beck isnt that dumb :p

Next you will tell us the liberals are anti-gay too! :p And Anti-Big Government! and Anti-liberal!! :D

While all this is certainly true, there is something at least obliquely hinted at by huskyfan that might have a smidgen of truth. Liberals can certainly lay down rhetoric that could be misinterpreted as sexist, racist or homophobic. Within liberal circles it's a given that this is self-referentially and obviously ironic. But outside those circles it might be taken literally. If you're not "in on the joke," it could be hurtful. This is basically the equivalent of throwing around the N word jocularly -- the rule is, you know exactly who's allowed to do this, and if you aint, you aint.

Now on the one hand, it's a misinterpretation by the aggrieved party so it's tempting to say, ferchrissakes, joking! But thinking about it: abrasive, dismissive humor, often delivered by people not of the "out group," and causing pain -- well, in a Jamesian way, that's functionally identical to the very thing it mocks. There's a difference of course, but... it's probably not the best habit to get into.

I'd also say that true conservatives are not sexist, racist or homophobic -- it's the morons among them who are. But that may be projection; it would mean, for example, that no true conservative could ever be a fundamentalist.

Hah. Rover is too blind with hate for me to notice that I've been one of the biggest anti-birfers on the board.

Just another reason he's on my ignore list. He's completely off his gourd.

I doubt there's an actual Birther on this forum. It's a college hockey board, after all.

(OTOH, there are Palin apologists, so you never know.)

In other news, I love Ezra Klein -- he's insanely smart and 9 times out of 10 scrupulously fair -- and I ohso-ohso-want to believe this. But.

"Misinterpreted"? The double standard that is usually at play here drives me crazy. What do you say when Keith Olbermann, one of the most highly adored celebrities of the left wing calls Michelle Malkin "a mashed up bag of meat with lipstick"?
-"Oh, that crazy Keith! Joking around again. I'm sure he meant it in a nice way."
The most hateful, misogynistic pigs are always liberals that hide behind their liberal credentials to spew the most foul garbage.
Of course, there are pigs of every stripe. I'm talking about the very worst offenders. And yes, I am slightly irked by the failure of smart people to recognize this.
Can you imagine the backlash if these things were said by conservatives?

Yeah, but that was OK because Michelle Malkin is totally a racist/sexist/bigot/homophobe. We've already established that you can talk to people like that any way you want.

Read some of Malkin's hate mail sometime. Eye opening.

That's true. Unfortunately Keith has to sell advertising for his show so acknowledging that she exists is good for his audience but bad for the country. She deserves to be ignored.

I'd tell you guys to save money on the air fair and just print up a fake Kenyan birth certificate, but somebody already beat you all to it a few months back. ;)

I do have to laugh at Red Cloud thinking I care enough about anybody on the message board to "hate" them. I think "amused" is a better word by the level of stupidity I see out of him and his counterparts is the way to describe it.
