Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

This is too hilarious, yet entirely predictable considering the crotch-sniffers around here. The focus is on the private citizen when the President or a member of his staff is alleged to have acted in a juvenile manner unbecoming the office when addressing said private citizen. T. F. F.

Seriously, Tom? You don't see the difference between Joe Schmoe from Springfield, and an outspoken, well recognized political mouthpiece? All that matters is that they're "private citizens"?

If that truly doesn't matter to you, then that's fine. It's your opinion. But I don't think it's unreasonable for others to see it in shades of grey and not consider it newsworthy.

He's laughing at us and we're laughing at him. Everybody wins.

Which by no means puts him on Rush's level...nobody else's elevator goes down that far.

Excuse me?

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

For me, Stewart rips on Republican's ideas, and what they stand for. He rips on Democrats and liberals for not standing up for what they supposedly stand for.

Which is his prerogative of course, but still I don't think it's quite the same thing.

This is a good point. Put it this way, I have no doubt John Stewart votes very similarly to the way I do. Which I would expect: he's smart. ;) He's also an Ivy League Mets fan from the NYC area. Where you stand depends on where you sit.

I only wish I was a tenth as funny, though. He's the P.J. O'Rourke of the left -- I don't quite trust anybody who doesn't find them funny, even (perhaps especially) if you're 180 degrees on the other side of the political spectrum.

I would object though to the characterization that there are Republican or Democratic "ideas." There are conservative and liberal ideas. The parties, OTOH, are just machines for manufacturing power. They have no "ideas" other than "win elections." They are, at bottom, just two huge, empty, Coke and Pepsi branding boxes into which you can jam pretty much anything.

And in this refuse bin of a thread, we find one nugget (gold, not chicken).

hmmm. The Dems are Pepsi. The Repubs are Coke.
Sarah Palin is New Coke.
The nugget might actually be chicken, when you think about it. White meat.

I thought she was in the Tea Party notThis

I don't really want to talk about TCP. I somehow got on their mailing list and now I can't get off of it, and they send a LOT of spam -- it seems to be their main business.

I really don't give a flip about the substance of the article (Laura Bush is pro-choice and for gay marriage), but the last quote strikes me as odd for some reason:

"It's disappointing to hear Laura Bush, who is a well respected and admired former first lady, espouse positions on marriage and the value of human life that are contrary not only to her husband's but arguably, according to polls, in conflict with the majority of Americans," said Carrie Gordon Earll, spokeswoman for the conservative group Focus on the Family.

I'm presuming (hoping) that she meant that it's disppointing that she isn't toeing the party line like her husband, but still, first couple times I read that I got flashbacks to the 1700's...

Which is kind of interesting considering her name is "Carrie Gordon Earll", and might suggest that she didn't really take her hubby's name if she's married. Shameful, really. ;)

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Are you trying to say that the Office of the President doesn't need to have respect for anyone?

I'm kind of on board with you here man, but:

1) People make mistakes in the heat of the moment and
2) Even if that's not a legitimate excuse, doesn't the road of respect go both ways?

Jeeze... You know, when I first heard about this story I knew it was going to be trouble. I'm with you, I got the same flashbacks.

Says right there in the Bible that a wife should defer to her husband. What exactly about these people do you not get?
