Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Still - what's the story? Rush is in the entertainment industry.

The story has nothing to do with Rush. It wasn't even his request, it was put out there by someone else. The story is about how the Leader of the Free World responded to the suggestion that he treat political adversaries (whoever they are) in a dignified way (the answer, if you missed it: "Go play with yourself"). Stay classy, Barry. We're so proud.

Financial reform...raging commies like Larry Kudlow call it 'terrific free market reform'. And do you really not know how poorly the US was viewed overseas or just how horrible the financial crisis was at the end of 2008? Keep grasping...again if he can manage the deficit, Obama still has a decent chance of being a top quartile president.

Obama is viewed in a positive light abroad.....in the eyes of the foreign public. Only problems is, their elected officials don't like Obama none too much. Opposite problem from W: Foreigners hated him, but their government leaders liked him. Which is better? Matter of opinion, I guess.

And with regards to the "financial crisis", it's not over yet. April tax receipts (usually the strongest month of the year) have resulted in a record monthly budget deficit. My only question would be: Is it still Bush's fault?

Rush is not a political advesary. He is a fat load who talks on the radio. Nothing more, nothing less. Had he said this about Mitch McConell or John Boehner, maybe you would have something....

Except that nothing in the linked article says anything about it being from Obama...in fact the closest it comes is saying Chafets wouldnt say whether it came from Obama or an aide.

"A day or two later the adviser responded, "Limbaugh can play with himself." Chafets wouldn't name the aide or say whether the quote was directly from Obama."

Nice try though.

This. Limbaugh's 'political adversaries' are Bill Maher and John Stewart.

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

It would have been kind of cool to see the two of them play golf. I think it would have done a lot more "healing" than the silly beer summit did.

Why would either want healing? It certainly wouldn't help Rush's ratings nor would it help Obamas.

Oh of course it wouldn't help their ratings. But for a guy who talks about eliminating the divides in politics like Obama does, I think it could have done a lot.

And for the record, I would totally be in favor of this if it was the other way around. If Rachel Maddow wants to go hunting with President Palin (shudder) in 4 years, I'm all for it.

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Wait, there was a point to miss?!? :D

OK, I admit I'm not up to speed on golf-gate. I figured that it would be in character for Limbaugh to rush to martyr himself. Maybe that's not how things went this time - I'll concede that, mainly because I can't be bothered to check for myself.

Still - what's the story? Rush is in the entertainment industry. If Roger Ailes wanted to meet with Obama to discuss building a better working relationship and Obama (or staff) told him off, that would be different.

Put it this way, if Sarah Palin is elected in 2012, and her chief of staff responds to Bill Maher's request for personal access by telling him to go scr**, I promise not to get all sanctimonious on you. Deal?

how about we do this one better... you tell us the president shouldn't do immature stuff like this and you don't invent a hypothetical where you impugn Palin's character.

See, this should be easy. The man defined himself as class and maturity. So far he's been an *** and a paragon of immaturity. Remember, this is the guy who said "I won" and gives out phantom middle fingers when talking about domestic political opponents.

Yes, but that would presume the president is looking to get along with people. These are the people who have been his (Obama's) sworn enemy. The president doesn't just not like his opponents... he hates them. This is what he has been raised on... this is what he believes.

You forget that we're dealing with a grown up radical. Of course he's going to hate Rush Limbaugh... if he were allowed he would probably take a swing at him because he's acceptable not just to defeat but to destroy. You forget how these guys think... in totality. There is nothing about this that will be friendly other than an outward face because they know showing this hate will lead to electoral defeat. On the other hand, you see these things crack on occasion. The hatred and immaturity is real... otherwise he wouldn't need to flip the finger or act in such a caustic hostile manner.

The insanity is the basis of a dozen fortunes in the echo chamber. Why would they ever give up on that business model? It isn't as if they gave a rip about the good of the country, or clean politics, or intelligent discourse.

Talk radio is like televangelism. The characters will move in and out of fashion (and prison), but the gold mine will exist as long as there are rubes.

So you're cool with the president's behavior? You think the actions of the president are that of a mature person?

Don't apologize for it. What ever you do... stop apologizing for this trash.

Usually I'm right there with you on a lot of things, but I do have to defend the President here. Who's to say this remark actually came from him?

That's just campaign rhetoric. A snow job.

The reality is that everyone wants to tone down political rhetoric when they're winning. Barack Obama, George H.W. Bush, whoever. It doesn't matter. No reason to be disappointed if you recognize it for what it is.

Limbaugh has one of the loudest mics in the country, it's turned on for several hours a day. Nobody dictates his agenda to him. He can start an actual dialogue with the administration, at the risk of losing some of his very lucrative audience. Or he can play Puff the Magic Negro and buy some shares of Google and Microsoft. I don't begrudge him either decision. He can be whoever he wants to be.

I think my reference was to Palin's chief of staff. Republican or Democrat, those folks have a refreshing tendency to speak directly.

But major bonus points for impugning hypotheticals and referring to Palin's character in the same sentence. John Stewart's got nothing on you. :D

If all of that were to happen, you'd have every right to.

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Clear away all the ideological noise, there's an actual disagreement here.

The President of the USA and the (still, for now) leader of the free world has an enormous job to do. It doesn't bother me in the least if he (or maybe she) doesn't spend valuable time taking seriously folks who are fundamentally unserious.

Do your job. That may or may not include swallowing your pride and working with Roger Ailes or . . . uhh . . . whoever's running MSNBC these days. But it doesn't include responding to everything that comes out of the mouth of comedians and demagogues from the opposite side of the political spectrum.

For those folks to even think about getting a private audience with the President is presumptuous in the extreme, and, frankly, I think it deserves the sort of curt response that Rahm gave (or that Palin's CoS gave in my hypothetical).
