Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Probably true, though they have some competition in the generations that followed them.

They learned from the best. It started with them. Their parents sacrificed everything for them and they ****ed it all down the drain.

are you drinking the "fiscal responsibility" kool-aid... er, tea?

Always have. What you would buy, pay for. Education, health care, modernization, even that boogeyman "wealth redistribution" are all perfectly defensible from a fiscal responsibility perspective as long as you pay for it.

Fiscal responsibility doesn't map to the liberal-conservative spectrum -- it's a completely different dimension.

Spending isn't irresponsible. Debt is.

One thing always confuses me. If the Boomers are so awful, why don't we say the Greatest Generation were the worst parents in history?

It always spends easier when it is somebody else's money.

Liberal academic: "Hey you Republicans, become more like me!!!"

Partly. But partly it's you have to go where the votes are, or you're toast. You can't be the angry old straight white southern fundamentalist male party forever. :p

I'm sure I'm being a little unfair to the guy, as it's probably pretty tough to water down a paper like that into 4 talking points. But really, points 2 and 3 seem like common sense. "Hey these people aren't voting for you as much as they used to, you should change that".

Point 1 is a favorite hobbyhorse of people on the left, but really, where has it worked in practice? He may have something with point 4, but I think that point is hardly groundbreaking.

The problem with Point 1 is the overgeneralization of statements like "move to the center on social issues." It encompasses far too much territory -- some of which the GOP is going to need to move on, some of which they should stand their ground to stay coherent.

Do they need to stay hysterically anti-gay and anti-choice? Absolutely, given the huge fundy base. Staunchly pro-military and pro-Empire? Absolutely, given their strongest region's banana-republic-like equation of military aggression with personal machismo and national prestige. Do they need to stay hard-line anti-immigration? Not unless they finally jettison their Country Club Republican contributors and become a true Populist party, unleashing the teabaggers' anger towards their hitherto corporate elite puppeteers. Do they need to stay hard-line anti-environmental and pro-oil? Meh -- they'd be better served to play that regionally, the way the Dems pitch contradictory industrial priorities to the yokels of each cabbage patch.

great news! Our senators admit they have no friggin clue what they're doing:
"It's a great moment. I'm proud to have been here. No one will know until this is actually in place how it works." - Chris Dodd (D-Conn)
But I guess the most important thing is, they did something. Right? Who cares about consequences?

Throw 'em all out.

There's a plan for everything, but things don't always go according to plan. You know how anything will work before it starts working?

Men plan. God laughs.
