Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

I thought you were outraged about his sartorial insufficiency.

There are no bounds to my outrage! It is so great it encompasses all of these issues.

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

The funny part is, if he's wearing fancy schmancy golfing clothes, he'll get called out by the exact same people for being elitist.

Speaking of Obama doing things when he clearly should be stuck in a submarine in the Gulf, personally doing everything that is BP's responsibility... last I checked, BP is the one who should be working around the clock on the issue, not Obama. The government (not just Obama, but the government in general) has the role of making sure they don't take shortcuts, and that they eventually make good on promises to pay for what they've done.

There's also a certain amount of comedy in the types of people that are complaining that the government isn't doing enough to do BPs dirty work in the mess that was created by BP. Put all your faith in the benevolence of corporations, then blame the government when it goes wrong. Woo!

That's been their playbook since Reagan. Remember, according to them, the gulf accident is the fault of environmentalists and the financial crisis was the fault of the CRA.

They begin from premises that are insulated from any possible logical falsifiability. That's why they're so good at that "shoot from the hip, straight talk" runway strut, and why they appeal to people who are afraid of ambiguity or complexity. :p

I'm a (pseudo) right-wing nut job, and I approve this message.

Clinton had a balanced budget, but I'd hardly call him frugal. Not sure who else comes close to meeting the criteria in the last 50 years.

Ike was the last president with a balanced budget (FY1960) except for Clinton. He had three balanced budgets. Truman had four. The budget was balanced every year from 1920 - the Great Depression. Half of the budgets were balanced from the turn of the century to WWI.

Nobody since Ike can really make any claim to be a fiscally conservative president (sorry Clinton and Reagan fans!). Of course the way Bush and Obama have been spending, everyone before them looks relatively fiscally conservative. It just goes from bad to worse.

The budget deficits from FY2001-2015 are estimated at $11.49 trillion. The budget deficit from 1789-2000 combined was $4.16 trillion.

Edit: When Ike left office, the US had a cumulative budget deficit of $259 billion. When Carter left office the budget deficit was a cumulative $834 billion. Since FY1981 the deficit is $15.045 trillion.

(estimates are through FY2015)

Too bad we can't express the sum of deficits in terms of constant dollars. The #'s may change a bit, but probably not by too much?????

Does that $834B include future commitments? Insofar as you can blame, say, social security costs on any Congress or administration, it should probably be tallied against the incumbents who passed the law against which the spending accrued. (It's probably impossible to do this nonetheless, since the law is constantly being tweaked.)

It's disingenuous for Congress X to pass a law that will require massive spending down the road, or to pass a tax cut that will result in massive loss of revenue down the road, but then take blame only for the deficit coeval with them. That's hiding costs (or lost revenues) in future budgets.

That'd be a challenging set of calculations, given how something like Social Security has been incrementally expanded many times over the years, and I'm sure there would be some different interpretations of who was responsible for how much of the current mess. Rarely does what Congress initially passes remotely match the greatly expanded spending that entails down the road. But an interesting question nonetheless.

Well, at the broadest stroke I think we can agree that we're responsible, at least those of us who cast ballots at any point in our lives. We vote against anybody who puts in writing that we need to raise taxes to match spending, or who says we have to cut spending and then specifically states what spending they will cut.

It's not a dictatorship -- we self-select our representatives, so when people start blaming them... I don't buy it. It's the combined stupidity of people who want all their goodies (Democrats) without paying for them (Republicans).

The enemy is us.

All too true.

When you put it that way, it's more of a decision/analysis as to what generations have pillaged the public coffers to what extent. But it's the kind of analysis that doesn't get done, as no one comes out looking good from it.

For me, fiscal responsibility is one of the biggest tests I appy to who I vote for. Unfortunately on that issue many times there's not much to choose from on the ballot.

are you drinking the "fiscal responsibility" kool-aid... er, tea?

The baby boomer generation is the most selfish band of humans ever to grace the planet.
