Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

Re: Obama XII: The shine is off the glass slipper

I agree with you that one can sometimes (not all the time) cherry pick someone's quotes to build a case to create a desired impression, but in this case I don't think much framing was required. Berwick's quotes speak for themselves.

I disagree.

If this guy is going to head a bureaucracy with a finite budget, then that budget imposes an upper limit on the amount of care that can be provided. Folks can scream bloody murder about rationing, but that ship sailed a long time ago. In that kind of situation, does it really seem so unreasonable to want to prolong the greatest amount of life, at the greatest possible quality? Or to want some transparency surrounding how those decisions are made?

It's not that I have no sympathy for the concerns of conservative critics. But there is waaay too much avoiding of hard questions going on in this debate.

Good, so, when were you going to discuss this with the American people? You weren't? Color me shocked.

As part of the settlement, which one gets to keep the internet?

and the private jet? and the houseboat? and the Hummer? and the mansion?

in a perfect world Tipper would be leaving Al for Bill Clinton. :)

GOP jumps out to largest ever lead on generic ballot

Still a bit early, but starting to get relevant six months from the mid-terms.

That's the largest Republican lead ever, 6 points. Dems have held 20+ point leads at times in the past, and they haven't necessarily converted to big gains.

I do think the GOP will make big gains this time, though -- dormant economy, midterm, directionless war dragging on...

And then there's this. Obama's popularity is at about 54%, predicting a 21 seat loss. I'd say it will be more like 27-30, unless the TP'ers screw it up for the GOP.

Nah -- API is reporting a trade..

Al Gore trades Tipper Gore to Tiger Woods in exchange for Elin Nordegren and cash.

which was actually worse than expected given that 90% of them are temporary census jobs.

"This number is extremely disappointing," said Todd Schoenberger, managing director at LandColt trading. However, he said, it should come as no surprise. "Considering first time jobless claims have been inching higher over the past four weeks ... and GDP came in at a lackluster 3%, American companies are going to be reluctant to hire."

The only thing outrageous is cherry-picking numbers with no context and then presenting them as some kind of positive indicator.

Allow me to fill in your blanks, like usual.

Of the 431,000 jobs added, that arch-conservative publication the New York Times says 411,000 of them were filled by the Census Bureau, jobs that will not last through the summer.

Expectations had been for the jobs added number to be 540,000. Whoops.

Only 41,000 jobs were created in the private sector, against an expectation of 180,000. Bigger whoops.

The unemployment rate did fall 0.2% where it had been expected to fall 0.1%. I'm sure we should stop right there, right fatty?

But no, we can't, sadly. 322,000 people exited the labor force, which more than covers the 0.2%. The participation rate actually dropped 0.2% to 65.0%

Sadly, these are not indicators of a growing economy. Thanks, Bush.
