Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

It is when your IRA funds are deposited into CDs or an interest-bearing savings account at an FDIC-insured bank. Which is what I was implying, obviously.

Nice attempt to CYA, but no it wasn't what you were implying. Why would you invest in CD's through an IRA when you can just invest in them yourself, or better yet your brilliant idea to put money in a savings account through your IRA. Yes, both CD's and savings accounts have no risk, but they also don't exactly give you the returns you need for a decent retirement. You also seem to be completely dismissing the concept of "fees" in all of your Ivy League level analysis. :D

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

So Obama's votes--or lack thereof--didn't have any impact on this situation during his stint as a Senator?

He was so powerful then.

It's so funny how you repubs think these legislators have so much power. Obama as a junior Senator jammed through massive spending bills, no question.

Hey, smart guy......you'd invest in CDs via an IRA for the tax benefits. Obviously, you fall into the uneducated group of Americans I was speaking of.

Do the math. $2k/year, 4% average annual return, 35 years. Retire at age 57 (after getting a college degree) with a nice chuck of change.....such that you could live off of the interest at 3-4%.

Stooge.

Never said he did, slapnuts. Just pointing out that we didn't hear anything from Obama when all of the apparent nastiness was going down.

The tax benefit for CDs is negligible when dealing with IRAs unless you're investing an ***-load of cash in them or in a Roth IRA very early in life. And if you're investing in CDs in early in life with a Roth IRA, then you aren't investing intelligently.

I'm dumping in about 20% of my gross pay to my 401k, Roth IRA, and other investment accounts, (well over 4x the $2,000 per year you gave as a good number). That's a heck of a lot compared to the recommended 10-15%. If I get a 5% annual rate of return (on a chemical engineer's salary) and assuming 3-5% raises, I'm going to MAYBE be able to retire by 65. I have no idea where you're getting this 57 retirement age.

Unless of course you're planning on living on $30,000 a year when you're retired... I usually enjoy your posts but you're way off on this one.

My bad on the calculation. Not sure where that came from......too many numbers to look at every day. :D My former broker always used to speak of the 5/5/25 calculation ($5k year/5% annual return/starting at age 25) that built up to a decent nest egg. Somehow that came out of my head with completely different numbers.

However, the tax bennies aren't to be ignored. Up to $5k tax free into a traditional IRA is a substantial write-off on a 1099ed salary of around $100k/year.

Also: Living off of $25-$35k year isn't as tough if a person does the responsible thing and pays off their mortgage before retirement.

It doesn't take a math genius (which evidently this guy is)...to figure out that if the great recession was brought to an end that spending due to stimulus, govt support to business, unemployment benefits and welfare would drop govt spending significantly. And simultaniously govt revenue due to increased biz and standard income tax could increase income maybe 10 or 20% (nearly half of citizens didn't pay taxes last year...and just off world-record breaking profits, neither did Exxon).

Have you looked at the Obama's own budget projections? It predicts record growth over the next 10 years and the average yearly deficit is still over $900B.

Barack Obama's joke from the White House correspondents dinner:

"Jonas Brothers are here, they're out there somewhere. Sasha and Malia are huge fans, but boys, don't get any ideas. Two words for you: predator drones. You will never see it coming. You think I'm joking?"

Honestly, if Dubya had a made a joke like this, it would have led Countdown and Hardball and every other liberal talk show right?

Isn't there a GWOT thread?

Anyway, how does the car bomb guy being from Pakistan have anything to do with tea baggers? Tea baggers are about taxation and government intervention (and Obama being from Kenya).

And does this mean you support Obama drawing down in Iraq to increase the pursuit of AQ in that part of the world?

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

Haha, I'm sure it is. I honestly don't watch any of the cable news networks. I just love me some Blame Bush Blame Bush Blame Bush Blame Bush

I keep trying to think of one positive thing that happened in Washington while he was in office. I can't come up with it.

As for blame, I don't think I really blame him. He did exactly what Dick Cheney told him to do for the most part. And with Dick it's not really blame, it's in his DNA.

Red Cloud seems to think the tea baggers are getting a bad rap. My biggest issue with them is they were nowhere to be found before Obama took office. I guess spending money is ok if you're a right winger. Course by saying that I'll get the Obama is spending more argument even though everyone (including the righties) agreed that spending money was the only way out of the recession that Cheney's DNA caused.

That's straight out of "The West Wing"

"Remember that you are 21 and she is 19, and the 101st Airborne works for me."

Taxation and government? I thought it was violence and racism. That's what the media told me anyway.

And there was a GWOT thread, until it took on a ridiculous title.

Re: Obama XI: Turn And Face The Strange

the recession that Cheney's DNA caused.

Cheney caused Iraq. Grover Norquist, and people who used his ideas to veil their profiteering, caused the recession.

And Cheney may be evil but that isn't DNA, it's a personal choice. I don't think Norquist is evil; just childish. He's said a man's ideas are complete at 21 -- that's really all you need to know about him.

We'll revive it, then. Consider the title to be the first draft of history.
