Of the last x many presidents and VP's, Carter would be the only one I'd trust with more than $5. Several I wouldn't even want to meet, most I'd open the door but keep them on the front steps, Carter would at least get invited to sit on the back deck and chat about his experiences.
None of that makes him a good president, just pointing out one thing that makes him unique in my view.

The economic crisis in the 70's was systemic and a result of the oil shock and the beginning of the death of industrial manufacturing, it had zero to do with anybody's politics. Carter's public policy was not a departure from the Nixonian mainstream that came before him; it was the centrist consensus of the day. He came into power as the most religious conservative president of the modern era (in terms of genuine commitment to faith, he probably still is -- I don't think you'll catch Dubya teaching Sunday school).
If you want to find a fall guy for liberalism's supposed failures, Carter's a bad choice. LBJ's Great Society maybe, but not Carter, who was essentially Clinton with morals.
Carter's real rap is he wasn't a rah rah guy like Reagan who could whistle through the storm until it passed and then take credit for the weather, he was a scold, and nobody likes a scold.
