I admire Palin for her ability to make millions by wrapping herself in an appealing narrative of how difficult it is to have a family and a successful career and make some real tough choices in her life, while actually exploiting her family while being a terrible parent, failing at and then quitting everything she's attempted from school to local to state governance, all the while avoiding taking responsibility for anything and blaming everyone else for her own incompetence.

And I'm sure it was just a coincidence that Congress lowered taxes at a time when the Boomers hit their prime earning years. Clearly they did it without any prompting whatsoever...
Congress was prompted all right, but it was by Reagan, not the Boomers.

The thought was that by cutting off the income, Congress would be forced to cut the spending.

Silly of us to believe in such a concept.

It is time for this Congress to go gracefully into the long night of retirement and get new men and women of principle in -- those who put the needs of the people ahead of the needs of the party.

Hope and prayer. If Congress is always corrupt, then have they lost the moral authority to lead?? If they have lost the moral authority, then does somebody need to write something akin to this???:

The problem may not be corruption at all. The problem may be that Congress has become a truly representative body and is doing the people's will.

My every instinct is that money poisoned democracy, but money may be all that ever really sustained it. The Founding Fathers were among the richest men in the colonies and they were unapologetically Optimates. The intelligence (and coherence) of government started to fall once the Populares came in beginning with Jackson's constituency and continuing in a march towards the bottom of the socio-economic scale. We have achieved more direct democracy along with greater disdain among people for our government.

The conservatives used to be the firewall against this -- they represented property and elites against liberals' push for equality. But once conservatism became even more boobocratic than liberalism, there was no counterweight. In a pure democracy, there is no spokesperson for quality, moderation or long-term planning, because those are inherently critical of the masses.

I don't think you want me to answer that honestly...I love this country with all my heart but it is so divided I dont know what to think. It is like watching a couple as they fight more and more. Sooner or later it doesn't matter every little thing blows up into a huge fight and it spirals downward. the left hates the Right and vice versa and it doesn't matter anymore what people say, if Obama says A the GOP says B. If a GOPer says 1+1=2 the Dems will say it actually = 4 just to argue the point. A country, divided amongst itself like this cannot stand.

And I am sorry Kepler but I don't buy your reasoning at all. Basically you are saying that the more say the people (i.e. the Average Joe) have in how the government is run, or the more representative the government becomes to the people, the worse off we are. If that is true than Democracy is dead both as an idea and a form of government. Even if I wanted to be that cynical, I have seen no evidence that Congress bends to the will of the people in any way. In fact, over the last 30 years Congress has done whatever it sees fit people be ****ed. (I would argue that Congress and the Executive Branch have done more to bend people's will then bend to the will themselves)

Face facts, even someone with the most honorable intentions going in falls to the corruption sooner or later. Just too much money going around not to take a piece of the pie. (how much does the average Congressmen make per year? How much do they spend per campaign?) Soon you start to act like your farts dont stink, you worry that the tap to all the free money will get cut off and you go from a man of integrity to a desperate man who will do or say anything to keep the prefix "Rep" or "Sen" before your name. That is how someone like John McCain can go from one of the most respected men on both sides of the aisle not controlled by The Religious Right and the GOP base to just a few months later becoming someone who takes pride in the fact that he votes with Bush II (the man who spread rumors he fathered a black baby out of wed lock) and panders to every crackpot under the sun.

That isn't what I'm saying at all. I'm saying the more say the people (i.e. the Average Joe) have in how the government is run, or the more representative the government becomes to the people, the less respect people have for government. That doesn't mean democracy is a failure or, even if it were, that it still isn't superior to any other system. It says democracy may eat its own legitimacy -- a spectacular case of familiarity breeding contempt.

I'm not advocating stepping back from democracy; I'm advocating people start to suck it up and realize that the problems of our government come directly from the problems of 300 million people trying to find compromises, particularly when about 200 million of them feel they have a god-given right to demand no compromise.

There certainly is a reason that we live in a Representative Republic instead of a Democracy. Republics are built around the rule of law. Democracy is the mob and as long as you have 51% of the people on your side you can take everything away from the remaining 49%. Sadly, I see this country moving away from a Republic and more towards a Democracy.
