I'd be shocked to find a president that was 100% faithful. The public just acts like it's never been done before.

I think for a long time the "public" assumed that all persons didn't do these horrible things... and that those who serve us should be the best in our society and so its even more of a shock. We haven't completely stepped out of it yet... and we won't as long as we hold ideals of how people should behave. We expect our leaders to be our exemplars.

They lowered taxes in their prime earning years, and refuse to cut their benefits now that they're retiring even though there's no money to pay for it because they cut taxes previously.

But yeah, they had no responsibility whatsoever.

You're blaming the effect (boomers costing a lot of money), rather than the cause (FDR and LBJ getting SS and Medicare on the books). And it's Congress that cuts/increases taxes and benefits, not the boomers themselves.

And I'm sure it was just a coincidence that Congress lowered taxes at a time when the Boomers hit their prime earning years. Clearly they did it without any prompting whatsoever...

no. I never said Palin was the first female nominated for VP. I am old enough to have VOTED for the first one.

I admire Palin for her abilities to have a family and a successful career and make some real tough choices in her life. and yeah, its a big deal when women break the glass ceiling and she did it for the Republican party, like Ferraro did for the Dems.

Seems to me a good reason to keep BP off-limits from these things for quite awhile. The only way attitudes change is by a punishment mechanism... a hole in the earth that emits large quantities of oil is not acceptable.

It reminds me of how Exxon continued to sponsor research into last decade with the sole outcome to try to shut down public opinion about global warming.

I am not big on regulation and think bank regulation is really pushing it. But I don't have a problem on this particular sector. The costs of disasters such as this are waay too high...to taxpayers, society and the environment...and so are their profits in an average economy (primarily due to its poorly functioning marketplace for gas and oil). Other energy companies are regulated and we never see scandals, disasters and ridiculous profits...but not oil (too much lobbying power I guess)
