Re: Obama 6(...66)

You're not even allowed to put that much work into this forum. Plus, you're forgetting the "big mo" that had every poll off by similar amounts just a day or two before the election.

Actually, since he polled the day before the election in some cases, he would have caught that. A for effort though geezer.;)

Besides, why would he be off 5 to 8 points in many cases? All biased towards one candidate? That's a lotta 'mo.

Truth be told though, the whole thing took me 5 minutes while I was recovering from a jog.

Mookie,

Zogby? The guy that had Obama winning North Dakota? That one's too easy (although to his credit he's not biased he's equally off base).

I got this email this morning, and I thought I'd share it here. Personally, I think it makes a good point, but I'm sure many around here will see it differently.:p

THE ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER

Two Different Versions!
Two Different Morals!

OLD VERSION:

The ant works hard in
the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up
supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a
fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed.

The grasshopper has no food or
shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible
for yourself!

TODAY'S MODERN VERSION:

The ant works hard in the withering
heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for
the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the
ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering
grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant
should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and
starving.

CBS, NBC , PBS, CNN, and ABC show up
to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of
the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.
America is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of
such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with
the grasshopper, and everybody cries when they sing, 'It's Not Easy
Being Green.'

Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration
in front of the ant's house where the news stations film the group
singing, 'We shall overcome.' Jesse then has the group kneel down to
pray to God for the grasshopper's sake.

Nancy Pelosi & John Kerry exclaim in
an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back
of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant
to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic
Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the
summer.

The ant is fined for failing to hire a
proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his
retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.

The story ends as we see the
grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the
government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant's old
house, crumbles around him because he doesn't maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow.

The grasshopper is found dead in a
drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a
gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

MORAL OF THE STORY:

Be careful how you vote in 2010.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

You must be a racist. ;)

Well, duh! Ants are BLACK you know. The fact that this story used a black insect when so many other choices are available clearly indicates a deep-seated, possibly even unconcious racism.

Oh, wait -the ant was supposed to be the good guy? Never mind.... ;)

Not all ants are black, racist!

Re: Obama 6(...66)

It was always just a bargaining chip with the Russians. Obama decided to use it to get them on board against Iranian nukes.

Moreover, some updated analysis indicates that the longest range Iranian missiles would come nowhere close to Poland or the Czech Republic. I've always viewed that move as nothing more than an attempt to **** off Putin, and it worked in spades.

Thats the only thing I could think of, but I haven't seen anything showing Russian movement against Iran. In fact, it seems to be quite the opposite. Granted, there could be things going on behind the scenes (and I certainly hope there are or else we took away a huge bargaining chip for no reason).

Not sure it was ever that big a bargaining chip, to be honest. There were two problems: (1) the locals hated it and the governments had to jam it down their peoples' throats (this was especially embarrassing because The New Europe was supposed to have moral fiber and backbone, or something, and then the people turned around and got all peacenik on us), and (2) the ostensible threat, Iran, didn't make any sense beyond AIPAC's continuous drumbeat of war against them.

When the Russians shut off the Ukrainians' heat and rolled over Georgia in Prague Spring style, that was the end of any illusion that the US was going to come to the aid of Eastern Europe any more than we did after WW2. This is a further recognition that we have our plate full with AfPak, so we aren't going to be throwing out weight around quite so haphazardly.

Of course, that won't stop the usual hyperventilation about appeasement. :D

Obama scraps European missile shield

Whats the rationale behind this? What good does this do?

They're not scrapping missile defense altogether by any means though, but rather switching the deployment to "smaller SM-3 missiles, at first aboard ships and later probably either in southern Europe or Turkey". The focus here is apparently on defense against shorter or medium range missiles:

Administration officials said the Bush missile defense architecture was better designed to counter potential long-range missiles by Iran, but recent tests and intelligence have indicated that Tehran is moving more rapidly toward developing short- and medium-range missiles. Mr. Obama’s advisers said their reconfigured system would be more aimed at that threat by stationing interceptor missiles closer to Iran.

This also gets it in place sooner:

By doing so, officials said, they would be getting the first defenses actually in place seven years earlier than the Bush plan, which envisioned deploying in 2018 the bigger ground-based interceptors that are still being developed. The Obama review of missile defense was influenced in large part by evidence that Iran has made significant progress toward developing medium-range missiles that could threaten Europe, even as the prospects of an Iranian intercontinental ballistic missile that could reach the United States remain distant.

Re: Obama 6(...66)

Further, later phases of the deployment will involve land-based sites in Europe. So this is deciding to use what we actually have available now to counter the threats we know Iran is capable of now, and later using technology that will be available later to counter the threat from Iran that may be present later.

But.....................but.......................George Bush could see into his soul!

Re: Obama 6(...66)

IMO the right move on the missle shield. Why spend gobs of money on something when the solution is of questionable effectiveness and takes into account a small number of opinions?

All teabaggers? If Medicare and SS are socialistic by definition, then I guess you agree the Govt takeover of healthcare is socialist also. I guess Obama is a socialist.

Why is it that the last 8 years didn't consist of calls of Nazism? Stupidity maybe, poor decision making perhaps, corruption occationally...but not Nazism.

Frankly, I don't believe conservatives, etc on this site have any idea what socialism is. Public healthcare does not equal socialism. And I am quite sure that for every policy that in some fashion could be considered a 'socialist' trait of Obama...there are a handful that are capitalistic. Indeed, the administration is looking to get out of its huge investment (and influence) in Citibank.

Its the usual approach from the right that is somewhere between a typical attempt to scare somebody...and a total misunderstanding of concepts in general.

I got this email this morning, and I thought I'd share it here. Personally, I think it makes a good point, but I'm sure many around here will see it differently.:p

I have no idea what's so fascinating about the right to get excited about this stuff (seen it before, eg the Marine and the professor)...those on the right are differently a bizarre breed.

http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2009/09/16/tea-party-protesters-protest-dc-metro-service/

Protesters who attended Saturday’s Tea Party rally in Washington found a new reason to be upset: Apparently they are unhappy with the level of service provided by the subway system.

Rep. Kevin Brady asked for an explanation of why the government-run subway system didn’t, in his view, adequately prepare for this past weekend’s rally to protest government spending and government services.

First off, a lot of the reports I heard said that the Metro seemed fine all weekend and there weren't any disruptions. Second off, it's the Metro, if no one died then for them it's a good weekend.
