This is the first time we have had a president who wasn't at least one of (1) Republican and (2) Southern since JFK was murdered. Two entire generations grew up thinking they had a God-given right to that office, and they are having a hissy fit that would embarrass the most shameless musical theater drama queen.

The way you deal with a hysterical child is to leave them alone until they run down. You certainly don't accomplish anything by screaming back.

I think the connection holds up just fine (the connection being ridiculousness) as those that oppose Obama based on race is minuscule, and Carter was trying to claim them to be a majority.

I think the "race card" makes the WH very nervous. The last thing they want is to be painted with same brush as Sharpton, Jackson, Farrakahn, etc., who cry "racism" at the drop a hat. As a practical matter, I think those who oppose Obama solely/primarily because of his race are a very small sliver of the opposition. Moreover, the appearance of Obama posters with the "Hitler moustache" is no different than similar posters of Bush and Cheney previously. Trying to use racism to blunt often-principled opposition is dangerous and patently stupid.

Oh, Come, on Kep. I thought you were smarter than this. This is the same broad stroked brush that someone of Rover's ilk would use. While I don't disagree that there are some who do think like that (Bush / Cheney cronies) I am pretty sure a majority of GOP'ers don't.

This is true though. If the Dems want the Baggers to go away, just ignore them long enough and most likely they eventually will.

How much is miniscule in your mind? Because IMHO about a quarter of these people just don't like him either because he's black or they think he's a Muslim. While that's less than the majority of them (as Carter claimed and I disagree with), its a not insignificant amount.

No, I'm not smarter than this.

Obviously (well, I thought obviously) every single person opposing Obama isn't a tirading tyke needing a timeout. But there is a subset* (the Birthers, the Deathers, the Screamers) who are, and the question is how to deal with them. They aren't up for a civil debate on the issues -- they aren't even up for an uncivil debate -- they're emoting, not thinking; they're having an emotional meltdown. Anybody married or with kids knows that when the other person in the room has lost it like that, you don't engage until they've regained their sanity. Until then you just try to keep them away from sharp objects so they don't hurt themselves or others, and ignore their insults because they're just animal cries of anger.

* My guess is 28%, the final score for Bush-Cheney support. That appears to be the Mendoza Line of American politics. Look on the bright side, on the Cafe it's only 4 or 5 out of hundreds of regular posters. It is a college board, that probably helps a lot. The regional bias doesn't hurt either.

Most of my friends are conservative like me, but there are a handful that believe every half-baked chain e-mail they get... and it's no coincidence that they happen to be among the least intelligent of my friends. I spend a lot of time on sites like snopes.com on their behalf.

1. Regardless of what might be in the final health care bill, Obama is on record as saying he favors a government option and single payer system, and he would like to eliminate private health insurance companies. A complete government takeover of health care/insurance would be Socialistic by definition.

2. What is the source for Obama's tax cut information? We need details to back it up, not just a statement saying it exists. Most Obama "tax cuts" may very well be "welfare" when it comes right down to it. Any of it that consists of refund/rebate/tax credit money that is going to low income citizens who don't even pay income taxes isn't really a tax cut; it's welfare.

All teabaggers? If Medicare and SS are socialistic by definition, then I guess you agree the Govt takeover of healthcare is socialist also. I guess Obama is a socialist.
