Re: Notre Dame leaves Hockey East for Big 10
Probably better to stay at 11 than do the equivalent of the old WCHA taking on Minnesota-Crookston or St Norbert.
I mean, Jesus... Bentley? Holy Cross? Why don't we throw in UMass-Boston, AIC and a revived MIT while we're at it?
Less than five years ago, HE - faced with the same 11 team scenario they'll be facing after next season - took on a UConn program that was playing at the same level then as Holy Cross and Bentley are playing at now, and in an equally substandard on-campus facility. So we already have a pretty good idea what HE's vision of the future (and tolerance for taking on a similar new, growing program) might be.
Holy Cross' edge is that they can (like UConn) easily play their home games at an AHL level facility - one that's only about a mile or two away from their campus, as opposed to a half-hour plus in UConn's case - and then there is the local community (Worcester), which is the 2nd largest city in New England, yet has no HE representation (and is also currently without AHL hockey). To compare HC to the likes of AIC

UMass Boston and MIT is just (with all due respect) silly beyond belief.
Bentley gets a mention because they are a very ambitious school that has grown from a single building or two in Back Bay Boston to what they are now in just over 50 years, and have had the intestinal fortitude to try to mix it up with the big boys in recent years. I've usually been one to be pessimistic about their place in the D-1 Hockey world, and some of their apparent ambitions. But knowing where they came from, and looking at where they are now, I would not put it past them to make the big push.
I mean, Merrimack is in HE - why would HC or Bentley think HE is beyond their aspirations?
