Norwich Women's Hockey

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Well, I don't think there's anything much different going on with respect to goaltending except that we lost our goalie coach. Think what you want but he made a difference IMHO. Beyond that, every goalie out there has let in a soft one here and there...the offense just needs to make up for it, that's all. As for the two freshman goalies, they have the skill sets, but just need some time to gain that level of confidence necessary for the big saves. I was surprised though that one of them did not start Saturday's UMASS game.

Boy, yesterdays game with St A was a good one. It was one of those where you control a good part of the game but can't seem to finish. Their goalie made some HUGE saves to keep it close.

I've mentioned in a prior post how our defense has improved from last year, and yesterdays 1st star went to #6, Sarianne Lynn. This kid picked up her game toward the end of last year and has not looked back since. She's currently the only D in the top 20 -30. http://www.uscho.com/stats/overall/division-iii-women/2010-2011/ Congrats to her.

A post game x-ray on Soph's wrist was negative. She took a slash in an altercation at the end of the second.

Great to hear. Didn't even notice it was affecting her in the third period. Although I'm not exactly able to concentrate on watching for signs of pain or discomfort during games :)

I think Lynn has been absolutely tremendous this year. Not only does she have rocket shot from the blue line, she runs the point extremely well on the power play and won't hurt you defensively.

Norwich's corps of 6-D have been impressive. Guay and Sharman are tremendous assests with their speed and skating ability.

I agree that all goalies let in the occasional "soft goal" but from what I am reading on the stats page and hearing from fans out and about is that for the number of shots that Norwich is giving up there are far too many...and looking at their goalie stats tells me that is true......A great team needs great goaltending also.

Did the coach just take another job and go elsewhere to another program? If so where did they go? Why did they just not hire another one to work with their goalies or use the men's goalie coach, or do they not have one either?

Glad to hear that Sophie was not hurt in the "altercation".....that would really hurt the team. Although I understand there is depth on this team now.......

There is depth and Norwich has already won a game without #9 in the lineup.

However, a prolonged absence from the lineup would certainly hurt the team. She is the unquestioned emotional leader of this team in the locker room and on the stat sheet.

Up till last year, the only "paid" coach was Bolding. As you know, he now has a paid assistant, but as unbelievable as it sounds, the rest of the staff does (did) it for the love of the game/team/school. With most companies/businesses trying to suck, err, get as much as they can out of their surfs... err... employees, doing more with less, etc., I can only imagine there's a limit as to what volunteers are willing to do. Needless to say it's a huge time commitment to boot so unless you have 110 tons of support.... well....

I haven't a clue what goes on the mens side.

Coach McShane and Mattson are both full-time. That's it.

There is no per-say goalie coach. I believe Dana Thibault has been working with them this year the majority of the time however.

It always was Freddy up till now. Not sure if he still is or not.

Ok, I have to ask. Who is in charge of the music between periods at the women's games? Someone might want to have a second look at the playlist. I'm usually not one for throwing out complaints about stuff like that, but remember there are children that go to these games, too. Some of that music might not be very appropriate for the venue. "You Gotta Lick It" and "Short D***ed Man" aren't songs that I expect to hear at a college hockey game with my family.

I totally agree with your concerns. Someone will look into it.

Not being up on all the latest songs our kids listen to these days, I didn't even know the interpretations/meanings could be a problem, and I suspect plenty of our fans would feel the same. I will admit though that I do enjoy those old rock songs thru out the game... Come to think of it, I'd like to hear Johnny Cash... " A Boy Named Sue "

Should we have "like a G-6....like a G-6" instead repeated about 200 times over the course of a song?

Finally, something controversial on the boards to talk about. Just didn't think it would be the between period song selection. I think a poll is in order. What music is acceptable and what should be played? I'll vote for Rick James " Shes such a kinky girl" Great tune and you can dance to it. On Dick Clark they would have given it a 92. Or perhaps a little Edith Piaf for all the WWII veterans. No, more appropriate would be John Wayne The march of the Green Berets. Please, don't stop me now.

Oh, you can stop, now.

By the way, the Rick James song is "Super Freak" and "Ballad of the Green Berets" was part of a soundtrack for a John Wayne film, but he didn't have anything to do with the record. As for Piaf, the "Sparrow," good for you. Regret nothing!

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

You mean John Wayne never sang that song? Ah, no regrets. Super Freak? I thought that was "You can't touch this" by a ball boy from Calli.

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

I can't believe that there isn't a goal tending coach on every team at this level. If the NHL goalies still require coaches, how can anyone think that they are not necessary here? I know it was constantly a point of conversation with my daughter when she was at Elmira. Goaltending is a very technical position, and things like positioning, angles, stance, placement and angle of the stick, etc are crucial elements which require practice that most regular coaches ignore or don't know anything about.
It is the least forgiving position, and most mistakes most often end up in a goal for the other team. Anyone else who makes a mistake, has the chance that the goalie will bail them out.
My daughter once had a coach that told her that "Your job is to stop the puck. How hard can that be". Unfortunately, there is no shortage of that kind of brilliance in hockey.

Life is timing I guess...Elmira has a pretty good goalie coach now. ;)

It's actually not that hard to figure out - some of the D3 coaches aren't full-time THEMSELVES. I would suspect that many schools have limited budgets that don't allow them to keep a goaltending coach on staff. That would mean that they'd have to let go one of the 47 coaches on the football teams in order to cover the cost...

In Norwich's case...we have eight coaches for 120 players. That's probably not even enough for the amount of players on our team.
