Norwich Women's Hockey

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

The games will be archived for future viewing, but NSN is so busy right now (this week we are video streaming nine games and audio streaming another on Saturday alone) that it may be a few days before they appear on the archive.

Thanks. Can't make it up there and will be driving during game time. Was just wondering if I'd be able to watch it when I got home...

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Come on...there were 487 of you in Northfield...why so quiet Norwich Women's Hockey thread? First game of the season jitters? RIT is better? Whatcha got?

It was a fantastic hockey game. I'm exhausted though.

I'll report on the game maybe tomorrow or Sunday. For now, you can read my short recap on the website.

RIT is still a darn good team though. that's for sure. Tomorrow's games should be interesting.

Saw most of the game online. Was fun to watch - good up-and-down affair. The offenses for both teams were a little rusty - both teams had glittering opportunities that were not converted. Goaltending looked good for both clubs. I was a little surprised at how many odd-man rushes Norwich gave up - there were a LOT of 2v1 and 3v1 situations given up by the Cadets. The power play was the difference in this game as Norwich couldn't get theirs going, while RIT converted two of five (I think it was five) opportunities.

ECAC West 2-0 so far in this series...

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Almost 500 people, including the Amherst and Platty coaching staff, were on hand to witness an exciting game. The plan (my version) was to use home ice advantage by getting a 1st period lead of say 2-3 goals, before RIT found their legs, and use the system to choke them for the rest. But Norwich penalties prevented any momentum from developing and by time the puck dropped in the 2nd stanza, the Tigers knew they were in the game.

One aspect of the match you won't read in the recap is the fact that Norwich's Cindy Fortin stood solid between the red pipes, having to make several NHL quality point blank saves to keep her team in the game, especially in the 2nd, when RIT had a clear advantage of play.

By the time Norwich scored, well into the 3rd, the play had evened up but a bad penalty by the home team gave RIT just what they needed… a 2 goal lead, and although the lady Cadets provided their fan base an exciting final 2 minutes of play, pressing hard in the offensive zone, it was too little too late.

Give RIT credit for "showing up" and I look forward to a possible rematch during the playoffs.

Many thanks to NORWICH and the NSN crew for the live video, allowing #9's brother, a member of the US military, serving in Korea, to watch the game.

Fortin was indeed tremendous. I assure you her play was not overlooked in the least bit. RIT could have had three or four more goals if not for a few saves.

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

Just back to the coast after the 230 mile slog from Northfield. Hats off to Norwich putting on a great inaugural East/West Classic! Two great games, a bunch of new talent and a great way to get into the flow of things before the NESCAC season begins. The message I took from these 4 games is you better keep track of the other team's stars, because when all is said and done, they are the ones who can hurt you. Norwich learned the lesson the hard way Friday when they let RIT's Stack (a sniper if there ever was one) get a bit of space on a couple of powerplays and bang 2 goals. They then schooled Elmira in the same truth when Leclerc produced a beautiful goal on a mid-air deflection from the top of the crease to open the scoring and an added an assist on the 3rd Norwich goal. The way the game played out the real star(s) of the show probably go to Coach Bolding and his staff. Elmira had way the better of play in the first 20 minutes, but Norwich adjusted between periods and just took it to Elmira in the 2nd and 3rd.
So, what did I learn during my sojorn in the north? RIT is the real deal (I think everyone was impressed with Chamberlain), Norwich has added some more than promising new faces to a star studded line-up, Elmira has a very young squad that sort of swams all over the place and will become very dangerous as the season developes and NEC has a short bench in front of a game and talented goalie and will probably enjoy putting this weekend behind them to get on with their ECAC-East schedule (except they have a return trip to play Norwich in a week).
Thanks again to all the players for getting the season off to such a great start!!!
GO U BEARS (field hockey, I mean)!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

The All-Tournament Team has now been added at the bottom of the release:

2010 East/West Hockey Classic All-Tournament Team-

F. Katie Stack, R.I.T.
F. Sarah Dagg, R.I.T.
F. Sophie Leclerc, Norwich
D. Katy Walker, Elmira
D. Traci Galbraith, R.I.T.
G. Cindy Fortin, Norwich
MVP- (Goalie) Laura Chamberlain, R.I.T.

Glad to put a few more faces to names this weekend and I hope everyone enjoyed their experience in Northfield and at Kreitzberg Arena. The level of hockey was certainly top notch for D-III early season and I'm sure that we'll be seeing atleast a couple of the teams that were here this weekend as the contenders come March.

We're hoping to make it an even bigger and better tournament next season. Stay Tuned! :) We're talking on nearly the same level as the Panther-Cardinal Classic as far as strength of teams.

PuckVoice, Nice job MCing the HOF at Homecoming. Wanted to introduce myself, but couldn't catch you before you left.

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

With Sophie this team will be a very good team but I still think from what I know about some of the new recruits that they will not over achive like they did a year ago. Just my opinion but with the exception of a couple of the recruits, I think too much is being made of this team as a whole. They will be good but I doubt they did enough to take out Platty or for that matter even Elmira again......time will tell, and to get this thread rolling I am saying that they will not win the ECAC East and that they will finish behind at the very least M'Ville. I think the talent level of incoming talent has been overblown and as the season progresses the staff will realize this..........Still a big supporter of this team but I do not think they did as much to improve as some of the other big hitters did.

I had to reach back several pages to find this post but figured it was worth it, now that the season ( and a couple of polls) has begun. Having the utmost respect for your opinion, I'm curious as to where you now stand, given the results of last weekends games, and the polls accordingly. Can they all be wrong?

Perhaps we should wait for a win against a team that didn't lose 92 points in three players to graduation and an all-american defenseman from a year ago. Wouldn't be putting too much stock in the win over Elmira just yet. Although if you'd like to throw all your eggs into that basket while you can, don't let anyone stop you.

Re: Norwich Women's Hockey

While the Elmira win historically would have been a great win for the Cadets...this year's version of the Soaring Eagles are set for a year of growing pains IMHO. They've got to develop an identity fast. I know they are young and lost a lot of talent from last year's squad but there is no rest for the weary in D-III women's hockey. You lose five games and your season is over unless you win the conference tournament and for a program like Elmira, the NCAA Tournament is pretty much expected year in and year out.

I'm not sinking the ship in one weekend because Norwich is no slouch. However, by far the class of the East/West Hockey Classic was RIT. Coach McDonald has that team looking mighty impressive right now and he's got a winner in Chamberlain in the net finally.

I know championships aren't won in October and November. Norwich is a perfect example of that as every year they seem to kick it into high gear come February.

EC's Sullivan will keep them in a lot of games but they've gotta find some more speed up front and some girls that can put pucks in the net.

You're way too diplomatic Prez. Seems one cannot say anything anymore without someone making it into something it's not but we'll leave it at that. Folks, it's all about having a little fun and Mainiac is on track.;)

#9 is two goals away from #50 in her career if my facts are checking out correctly. :)
