Norwich university cadets 2014-2015

Re: Norwich university cadets 2014-2015

Whatch it again, focusing on the ref... He never once waived it off. In fact, after waiting a second or two, he definitely pointed at the net very quickly as play was continuing behind him as if he were signaling a goal... It seemed to me that he was unsure, but thought it might be possible, and therefore intended to conference with the goal judge all along. (If he's not going to check with the goal judge when he's unsure, then what is the goal judge being paid to do, exactly?)

Did it go in? To me, that video is inconclusive. I've seen pucks bounce that way off the crossbar, but I've also seen them bounce the exact same way off the netting immediately behind the crossbar (the netting is going to have a lot less give within an inch of where it connects to the bar). It is entirely possible that the goal judge had it wrong, but if the officials on the ice are unsure, while the goal judge is confident that it went in, then the official absolutely needs to consider the opinion of the goal judge. After doing that - and discussing it with the other officials on the ice in the event that they heard or saw something that would indicate a non-goal - the official in question decided to award the goal.

Again, I acknowledge the possibility that the puck never went in, but - short of video replay, which really needs to be included in the future - the appropriate procedures seem to have been followed, which ultimately lead to a goal being awarded.

The last thing I'll say on this is the referee doesn't immediately signal and to me it looks like he turns his head to look up at the goal light, sees its on and then quickly points with an uneasiness.

Re: Norwich university cadets 2014-2015

When I said earlier that the shorty was a killer. I fought off the urge to say what you so perfectly did. Huge swing, kills the power play and sends a very good goalie to the locker room with a dent in her confidence. Couldn't believe they were even having a discussion especially after the puck heads back up ice for 15 more secs of play. Just a shame Platty is to good of a team to be handed that gift. I guess we'll just have to be called winers and they'll look at the video with a different pair of glasses.
If it would have ended up a one goal game I would say it was the difference, but Plattsburgh scored 2 more times before Norwich scored their first goal. Norwich had plenty of chances to get that one plus more back but were stopped by the Plattsburgh defense. Teams have to learn to overcome bad calls and take advantage of the situation and use it as fuel to get stronger especially when it happens that early in the game. That goal (non-goal) was at 12:14 of the first period and left 52 minutes of hockey to get it back. It was 4-0 before Norwich scored its first goal at 16:44 of the second. Did it set the tone of the game? I don't think so since from that point on Norwich outshot Plattsburgh and had a territorial advantage. Norwich also had 6 power plays to Plattsburgh's 3. The Plattsburgh defense stopped many shots that Norwich had that never reached the crease as well. To sum it up, that one goal was not the difference. Plattsburgh earned the win and was not handed a gift.

Re: Norwich university cadets 2014-2015

I remember one goal being denied as it went in after the whistle but what was the 2nd one about?

The other one was in the 1st when a Norwich player grabbed and covered the puck in the crease in a scrum: goal, penalty shot, delay of game?
When the good teams play it so often comes down to puck luck karma or whatever you want to call it. Someone wins and someone doesn't. Norwich had a great season and the staff did an amazing job getting back to the finals. Hope the games today are competitive and exciting!

It's interesting how many interpretations there are out there of that video. You could be right with yours birdwatcher so I'll end the subject matter.

And now on to a much more important one, the game for 3rd. I have no real opinion of River Falls as I've never seen them play but mingling with some of the parents/supporters yesterday, they seem like decent folks. Good luck to both. :)

Re: Norwich university cadets 2014-2015

play went on while the "local" trigger happy goal judge figured it did. So at the next whistle, Houle rightfully questioned the call and after a meeting with the goal line judge, the ref, in all his weakness, decided to reverse himself, and award the goal.

Could it of changed the direction of the game? No one will ever know. It's too bad NCAA does not allow for video replays but with technology advancing rapidly, I would not be surprised if that changes too. Meanwhile, I now feel that the Platty win is tainted, and although Houle would never admit it, probably feels the same.

The "local trigger happy goal judge" is not local at all, but additional NCAA officials brought in for all playoff games.

I guarantee no one in the Cardinal organization thinks the win is tainted.

As for whether it was in or not, I couldn't tell. What I didn't hear was the distinct sound vulcanized rubber makes when it hits iron goalposts. To my knowledge, no one else in the area heard the puck hit the post either. The video isn't nearly slow enough to get a definitive answer. Having been a goal judge (of the "local", but not "trigger happy" variety), I trust the guy sitting 10 feet away from the goal...

I agree with your interpretation of the on-ice official's reaction. If he really wanted to call goal (the way he pointed), he should have blown the play dead immediately and had the discussion then.

As for your first post, was that a member of the Norwich Athletic Department openly criticizing the officiating? Any rules violations there?

Consol should have been at 1 and final at 4:30. This is like punishment waiting for this game. Hope an exciting game vs Amherst will keep me awake while going back down 89.

Couldn't be for the same reason Plattsburgh men had be on the road! Practice times have to be assured.

Re: Norwich university cadets 2014-2015

Great camera angle. The puck hits up off the goalie, then the cross bar and never goes in the net. No goal.
I think it went under the crossbar and hit the first portion of netting. Goal. We all have opinions...just like we all have something else. The goal/non-goal was not the difference of the game though.

The camera is moving when the shot is made. I can't tell if the puck disappears or not. But again, I don't hear it hitting off the post either. I can't tell one way or another.

Well, he should of been local then, prob would of done a better job. But the goal judge had nothing to do with it as the ref was actually prob closer and with a much better angle.

And after watching the new link in slo mo, you are absolutely correct. The bottom line here is that the Ref simply screwed up that's it.

And as I check the scoreboard, I see they will play for third vs River Falls and as I indicated in a earlier post, will be a good thing.

looks like it was a real good thing. At least the East arrogance got a little bite in the *** today!

Re: Norwich university cadets 2014-2015

Very classy of Coach Bolding to sub in Carrier for her last game

Given that weak goal, it probably cost him 3rd in the nation but yes, very classy... also put in a couple of other kids so they could experience the "dream"... good of you to bring it up.

No offense, but if you're arguing that beating Norwich's #3 goaltender in a third place game gives eastern "arrogance" a "bite in the ***", then you're making easterner's arguments for them...

Press pause on your video as you see the puck approach the cross bar. It's really not that hard to see how obvious it is that the puck hit the cross bar and never went in. FYI, I don't have any stock in either team so I have no biased opinion. If the situation had been Norwich hitting the cross bar I still would say the same thing.

To be honest...I didn't watch the game and posted that before I saw that they switched goalies.

Secondly, your going to blame the loss on the back goalie...that's good sportsmanship. I just find it amusing that I've said multiple times that you can't take the win/loss in the third place game seriously because of the emotions involved in not winning on Friday. To which I've been told...that's a B.S. excuse. Norwich coach apparently "gives up" and plays back ups and its a classy move. #hypocrisy!

Re: Norwich university cadets 2014-2015

Congrats to Norwich for a wonderful season. So proud of these "girls" (for shelfin). Also, the polls were right, and I have to admit, most predictions on this blog were correctly calling the games. I just wanted to believe until the end. Wish the games were on home ice. The Vibe would have been different. Looking forward to next year's final four since they will have a "seasoned" team with 15 soph's returning to the NCAA finals. Classy move changing a goalie when you are up 3-1? Maybe a classy move but was it the best move for the team? I don't know. 3rd place vs 4th place - either way it is a starting point for next year. Glad the "girls" had this experience and so glad they made it to New York.
