Re: Norwich university cadets 2014-2015
The last thing I'll say on this is the referee doesn't immediately signal and to me it looks like he turns his head to look up at the goal light, sees its on and then quickly points with an uneasiness.
Whatch it again, focusing on the ref... He never once waived it off. In fact, after waiting a second or two, he definitely pointed at the net very quickly as play was continuing behind him as if he were signaling a goal... It seemed to me that he was unsure, but thought it might be possible, and therefore intended to conference with the goal judge all along. (If he's not going to check with the goal judge when he's unsure, then what is the goal judge being paid to do, exactly?)
Did it go in? To me, that video is inconclusive. I've seen pucks bounce that way off the crossbar, but I've also seen them bounce the exact same way off the netting immediately behind the crossbar (the netting is going to have a lot less give within an inch of where it connects to the bar). It is entirely possible that the goal judge had it wrong, but if the officials on the ice are unsure, while the goal judge is confident that it went in, then the official absolutely needs to consider the opinion of the goal judge. After doing that - and discussing it with the other officials on the ice in the event that they heard or saw something that would indicate a non-goal - the official in question decided to award the goal.
Again, I acknowledge the possibility that the puck never went in, but - short of video replay, which really needs to be included in the future - the appropriate procedures seem to have been followed, which ultimately lead to a goal being awarded.
