Norwich going DI?

Re: Norwich going DI?

Please, Norwich could walk into the AH right now and be at least a .500 team. We're not talking about Norwich competeing in the HE or ECAC.

I agree 100%. Nevertheless, playing .500 hockey against what is at best a marginal Division I league doesn't mean that a team competitive in Division I.

Norwich has been a perennial national Division III powerhouse. If Norwich were to move to Division I, anything less than success at the national level would be disappointing to the Cadets' supporters. But such success wouldn't be easy to achieve.

Yea no kidding, where were you people 4-5 years ago when I was saying this to RIT....

As far as your second quote, tell that to RIT fans now...they seem to be pretty happy just being in that marginal league, so they say.... I still stand by what I said 5 years ago, if Plattsburgh were to go the same route as RIT, I would find a new team.

Yes... It sounds a lot like Ivy League basketball being Division I... Until you actually watch a game... :)

Re: Norwich going DI?

Here is a DI school looking to go DIII (no ice hockey though) - it does provide a little info on why a school might want to and the process.

Additional info on above here.

There seem to be a lot more schools looking to move up to DI status from the DII and DIII ranks than vice versa, and in some cases you really have to question their motivation and wonder whether they are delusional in chasing money that may never materialize. I am specifically thinking of examples like NJ Institute of Tech., whose basketball team was winless in the 2007-08 campaign, and Bryant, which is about to accomplish the same dubious achievement this season. And then there are places like Binghamton, who basically sold out their school's reputation for a trip to the NCAA basketball tourney last season, after less than a decade at the DI level.

The only school I can think of off the top of my head that has moved "down" to DIII from the DI level in recent years is Birmingham Southern, who has also greatly expanded it athletic program in the process, now offering sports like football and lacrosse. BSC has an enrollment of like 1300 or 1400 students, and while there are smaller schools offering DI athletics (across the board, not just one sport), it is hard to see how that strategy can be sustainable in the long run.

Just my $0.02, of course.
