Norwich going DI?

Re: Norwich going DI?

I don't know why they don't resurrect D 2 Norwich, Middlebury, Plattsburgh Oswego etc would make a very strong D 2 circuit.

Why would a high end academic school like Middlebury want to play in a league with Plattsburgh and or Oswego?

They are where they belong and have good rivalries with other top tier academic schools

And we have the winner for the *ssh*l* post of this thread.

Maybe so their students can learn how to spell congratulations...

Re: Norwich going DI?

@ the "well endowed" big boy$....don't assume that everyone pays retail - in fact a good number of students don't pay a dime...it's all based on economic need and classroom performance, but if you dig deeper into the financial statements you will see another big number going to support tuition free students....and not just Canadians who happen to play hockey...

Re: Norwich going DI?

Why would a snobby private school like Middlebury want to play in a top notch league of public schools such as Plattsburgh and or Oswego?

They are where they belong and have good rivalries with other top snob academic schools

Fixed your post :p

Oh,NO! from out of the blue comes another elitist Middlebury fan? Better watch your back, Hokydad!

Re: Norwich going DI?

Why don't we continue onward to the east side of the Raquette River to the only school in town that's actually won a national championship? Two in fact! :D .

Wait a minute, if we were traveling west to start with, wouldn't we have to back up to get to the east side of the river..?

"Q.32: A train leaves Denver traveling west at 42 miles per hour. Another train...."

I agree. In fact, let's switch the NESCAC back to postseason-ineligible and minimize the need for players to tread on vile, state-administered soil :)

If "traveling west", you would still "get to the east side of the river", but it would a bit longer - the circumference of the earth at 44.625 degrees, less a couple miles.

1. Middlebury is a NESCAC school, and as such competing outside NESCAC is not an option.

2. All the schools you listed are Division III colleges, not Division II.

3. Finally, Norwich is a great Division III team, and I truly believe they're good enough to win the Division III national title. Nevertheless they're not even close to the talent level needed to compete at the Division I level. The gap between Division III and Division I hockey has widened, rather than narrowed, over the past couple of decades.

Please, Norwich could walk into the AH right now and be at least a .500 team. We're not talking about Norwich competeing in the HE or ECAC.

Re: Norwich going DI?

Could someone explain the history of how Div. II disapeared? I missed that.
Here's what I have (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong):

1. The NCAA creates a Division II hockey championship in 1978, while DIII continues to go without a championship. DIII programs play up en masse in pursuit of the DII championship.

2. The NCAA notices that the vast majority of DII hockey is made up of DIII schools. They create a DIII championship in 1984, and discontinue the DII championship the following season. The important distinction during this period is that DII programs ARE allowed to "play down" for the DIII championship (hence, continued tourney participation by teams like Bemidji and Mercyhurst).

3. In 1993, the NCAA resurrects the DII championship, and stipulates that DII programs must play for it, rather than the DIII championship. This forces DII schools into a very small pool of opponents, and the championship largely becomes the Bemidji-UAH Finals Series.

4. The NCAA announces the end of the DII championship (again) following the 1999 season. "Playing down" is no longer an option. Most of the stronger teams in DII begin playing up to DI. DII hockey is left with the tiny membership it retains today.

and destroying the ECAC West in the process.:o

Niagara, Canisius, Mercyhurst, and later RIT all jump ship to D-I leaving the conference in shambles. Luckily Utica, Neumann, and Manhattanville started programs or Elmira and Hobart would have been left out to dry.

I automatically assumed he was "traveling" northward on Route 11, which is always my usual route, and thus you would get to Clarkson first.

I didn't read it carefully that he was metaphorically making the trip from Norwich, and thus, yes, you would get to Potsdam first.

Tell that to my brother-in-law who is sending his lifetime straight A son to Dartmouth...

Re: Norwich going DI?

I remember reading an article a long time ago that said something to the effect that either Princeton or Harvard could spend 1/4 of one percent of their endowment to allow every student to attend for free.
Russell - If I'm not mistaken, Princeton's admission policy is need-blind, so deserved students do attend for free.

To acquaint their elite students with the less fortunate that they've studied in Sociology class. Moron.
