Men’s Hockey: Cadets Hold Year End Awards Banquet; Name 2011-12 Captains
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich men’s ice hockey team wrapped up another successful season on Sunday afternoon with their annual season-end banquet held at Kreitzberg Arena.
The Cadets (22-6-3) won their unprecedented 13th straight ECAC East regular season title and ninth ECAC East Tournament title. They also qualified for their ninth Division III Frozen Four, all coming under current head coach Mike McShane.
NU head coach Mike McShane and the rest of the coaching staff also presented the annual end of season awards at the banquet.
Travis Janke (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan) and Parker Carroll (West Chester, Pa.) were named the Co-Rookies of the Year. Janke tied for the team lead with 39 points and led all skaters with 27 assists.
Carroll was a second semester addition and was brilliant between the pipes for NU. He went 14-1-2 with his only loss coming in the NCAA semifinals against St. Norbert. Carroll also posted a 1.82 goals against average and a .899 save percentage.
Junior forward/defenseman Igor Martinez (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was named the Most Improved Player (Edwin Jay Polley Award) after he made the switch from defense to forward in January and became a mainstay as the fourth line center. He had two goals and five assists for seven points in 24 games played.
Senior defenseman Greg Eskedjian (Barrie, Ontario) and sophomore forward Scott Schroeder (Drake, Saskatchewan) shared the Robert Priestly Award, which is given to the player that best exemplifies the spirit of Norwich University Hockey.
Eskedjian had four goals and 25 assists for 29 points, which led all defenseman in the ECAC East conference and ranked sixth in the country. Schroeder posted 20 goals and 19 assists for 39 points, which tied with Janke for the team lead.
Senior team captain Chad Anderson (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) won the Coaches Award after compiling 11 goals and 20 assists for 31 points. He also surpassed the 100-career point mark in a game against Castleton on Feb. 11.
Pier-Olivier Cotnoir (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) was named the 2010-11 Most Valuable Player (In Honor of Kevin Crowley ’70) after leading the team with 21 goals to go along with 17 assists for 38 points.
Long-time Norwich athletics supporter Bill Tanner and 1975 graduate was named the 2010-11 Blue Line Club Sportsmanship Award winner.
The banquet ended with the traditional naming of next year’s captains and will be senior Shawn Baker will take over the captain’s “C” from Anderson for 2011-12. Will-be senior Owen Carpino will remain an assistant captain and he will be joined by Schroeder as well as the other assistant captain.
