Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

I'm a Brown fan who tagged along with my friend, who is a Curry alum, to the Norwich/Curry game.

First of all, I want to say that I left the arena very impressed with almost every facet of the experience. The arena was great with excellent sightlines, the fans were devoted and into the game (much more so than Brown's fans, which is sad to say given that we participated in the first-ever game of college hockey), and the play itself was of good quality. Norwich could skate with quite a few D-I teams, and, I don't think it's a stretch to say, would be a solid, middle-of-the-road Atlantic Hockey team. Curry was not a bad squad by any means, but they were simply overwhelmed by the quality of Norwich.

But back to the arena: I thought the food was great, the price was unbeatable for an NCAA tournament game, and the atmosphere as a whole was fun and enjoyable, even as someone who was sort of pulling for the men in purple. The student section seemed to rattle the Curry goalie early and often, and I don't think many of the players were used to playing in what was essentially a D-I, Hockey East-type atmosphere.

Once again, I left Norwich very impressed, and I wish you good luck as you search for your second title in a row!

Thank you, that's what we really love to hear. Kreitzberg is a gem, and the people of Central Vermont have really embraced the team. As a retired faculty member I'm very proud of what we have put together here. It's a great ad for the school.

Next year we get an ex. game against Dartmouth down there. That will be fun (although I will have mixed emotions about that one)

Congrats Norwich, very well played game should be a good one this weekend and good luck.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

gotta like Norwichs chances this weekend if their D keep playing as well as they have the past 8 games....only giving up an average of 16.6 shots a game! That is pretty amazing and sure limits the scoring chances and against Platty that will be huge.

Wow, that should be fun for you guys! Dartmouth is a great team with a really nice arena, and Hanover is a beautiful town. They've completely owned Brown ever since they lured their current coach (Bobby Gaudet) away from Brown in 1997.

Have there ever been any talks of Norwich going D-I? I think if they could expand the arena by about 500 seats or so and add scholarships, they could be very competitive in a very short amount of time. Then again, perhaps it's better to be consistently in contention for a D-II/D-III title than to be consistently average in D-I (a concept with which I am far too familiar, since Brown has had three winning seasons since 1993). Any thoughts?

Another Brown connection-Roger Grillo was an assistant coach at Norwich before going to UVM.
At one time there were talks of possibly moving up (The arena was designed and built with an eye towards a potential 2nd concourse level). WIth the current climate, it is unlikely to occur however.

thanks for the comments, we work very hard at making it that way. As far as DI is concerned, one never knows.;)

Just need to point out that if Norwich wanted to offer scholarships for their DI hockey program, they would, like RIT, have to move their entire athletic department to DI. DIII schools that play up are not allowed, unless they offering scholarships prior to (I think) 2003, to offer athletic scholarships. Schools like St. Lawrence, Clarkson, RPI, and Colorado College, along with the likes of Johns Hopkins Lacrosse, are allowed to offer scholarships because the scholarship program was "grandfathered-in".

RIT seems to have made out alright without offering scholarships in the league they play in. :)

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong here. But, most if not all of the Atlantic Hockey teams only offer 12 scholarships. Meanwhile, RIT has no such restrictions since they do not offer athletic scholarships and instead rely solely on finnancial and foreign aid packages, which in some cases could end up being around the same amount of money.

Throw in the fact RIT has the best fans in the league, you can see why the Tigers have been pretty successful so far within their league.

eom.

Did I just defend RIT? (pukes.)

However, their program still has to comply with DIII rules, such as the one that got Buff State and Geneseo in trouble last year. If they have a Canadian aid package, they better be sure that there are enough non-hockey players in that scholarship program to keep it from being a defacto athletic scholarship.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

Is Tim Houston still with the team? He's been missing from the 4th line for quite some time now. Igor Martinez is doing a great job in his place, just wondering what happened to him?

Doesn't the size of the school work to their advantage?

He's still with the team.

As Jerry said, he is still with the team. Just been a healthy scratch.

Igor Martinez has done an outstanding job centering the fourth line with Tory Allan and Colin Mulvey on the wings.

The Grillo regime was a very bleak and depressing time in Providence. He had a .300 winning percentage and probably won a composite 3 playoff series over 12 years. I wish he would have stayed at UVM. Now, unfortunately, he is influencing young American hockey players with USA Hockey.

I could definitely see the rink with two levels. It would actually resemble our Meehan Auditorium a bit if that were to happen. They could also add more seats at the end where the zamboni resides, I think (they would also have to be on the 2nd concourse). But as it is, Kreitzberg is a great place to catch a hockey game. If the trip weren't so long, I might come up more often.

Still need to meet the randomness test and proportionality. If anything it makes it harder. If you have 5 players of a 25 man squad with a foreign student "mega grant", you would have to have 20% of the student body with the same plan - 3000 students would have to be getting the same deal.

IIRC (in another thread), it is like a 17 year process to move from D-III to full fledged D-I membership. IMO, they don't want to pollute the waters with any more non FBS schools.

RIT and the rest are stuck playing their one exception until the FBS hockey playing schools get tired of that and throw the minnows out of the shark tank.

Cynical Joe

+1

Those little schools pollute the "brand." They once tried to remove DI status from the Ivies because they didn't have enough FB attendance. Then they invented 1A, 1AA, and 1AAA, and then they decided to call it the Football Championship Subdivision - which doesn't really apply to the Ivies because they choose to say no to post season FB.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

Norwich's ticket allotment sold out in 20 minutes tonight at the Kreitzberg Arena box office.

For all those still needing tickets, Plattsburgh will have them on sale on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

Re: Norwich Cadets Hockey 2010-2011: Title defense time.

To me, this illustrates the gulf between Division I and Division III. I like D-III better.

When asked about firing football coach Jim Tressel, the Ohio State University President Gee replied: "No, are you kidding me? Let me be very clear. I'm just hoping the coach doesn't dismiss me."

Imagine the President of Norwich saying that about Coach McShane...

There's a real lack of perspective there ...
