Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

Had a bit of a challenge last night because of bandwidth and other issues where I was/am. Lots of buffering, and trying to watch the Avs with a 5:30 game at the same time made it "interesting." Watched the 2nd period on my iPhone (don't know for sure about the sound, because I had it down low much of the time but boy what a tiny picture - but it didn't buffer, like my computer was). Then put it back on the computer for the third period. Shared bandwidth is not fun.

As for what I did see of the game, once again we that teams with a modicum of talent that try to skate with the Cadets (especially at Kreitzberg) seem to run out of gas about halfway through. On the other hand this year we have seen that teams with a lot of talent seem to be able to find a way to make things tough on NU when they play a physical game. I think that is something that our young guys need to learn. They still have to work on coming back from adversity late in a game.
I have found using Google Chrome puts a lot of the buffering to rest. IE has too much going on in the background. The best results are with ipad!!

I use a Mac, so I know nothing about the most recent disasters from Microsoft, but I have heard a lot about them. I'm not a big fan of Chrome because of the way that it tries to make me do more than just browse when I open it up from my Mac. If my iPad had been with me, I would have been using that - but it wasn't - but the buffering on the phone was minimal.

All that and they really need to stay out of the box. I am not sure about any statistical comparison to recent Cadet teams but there have been some games this year--especially the tougher ones---where the boys seem to draw too many penalties. I know our season "average minutes in the box" is low as compared to others--but again against tough teams it seems much higher. Is that real or imagined?

I am very impressed by the number of Cadets who are putting points on the board. Its always nice to have one or two players in the hunt for leading in goals, assists and total points--but I'd like the idea of more shooters out there than one or two who carry the lot.
Does any one track those kinds of stats, e.g. teams that lead with the most number of goals from the greatest number of players. I am not sure how you would configure that stat but NU seems to be getting help from all four lines and from every player. Again is that real or imagined on my part?

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

As I'm streaming my 4th Norwich game this year I gotta say what a pleasure it is listening to the lead guy on the radio. He's got a golden throat. (Not breaking any news there.). Keep up the great work.

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

I was curious about the top teams' scoring distribution so I came up with a formula that determines how many goals per game teams were getting from their 2nd, 3rd and 4th lines. To come up with a number, I subtracted the total number of goals scored by a teams' top3 goalscorers + all goals scored by defensemen. Then, I divided that number of goals scored by all others by the number of games a team has played. It's not scientific, but it gives an idea on how much production is coming from the whole lineup. Here's the results for some of the top teams:

1. Stevens Point 2.5
2. St. Norbert 2.2
3. Plattsburgh 2.1
4. Norwich 2.0
5. Adrian 1.8
6. Trinity 1.8
7. Oswego 1.7
8. Eau Claire 1.7
9. Hobart 1.4
10. St. Thomas 1.4
11. Williams 1.3
12. Utica 1.3
13. Babson 1.2

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

Norwich moves the puck more Power Play like at even strength than they do on the power play. Watching today, the even strength puck movement is exactly what you want to do with the PP. Why don't they just pretend ...

Too much standing around... 5 on 5 they have the right movement when they control the puck grrrrr

I guess I figured that is the way it would turn out. Good teams know how to build team great deal of depth right on through to the forth line. I guess I am not surprise. Thanks for this information. Sadly Babson took both games from UMB this weekend which leaves them trailing by a point--so the last weekend of the season should be a real barn burner.

A solid Cadet win today as the freshmen keep doing their job. Good luck next weekend down in New Hampshire against NEC and St.As.

We've got a tough road to hoe before even thinking about the last weekend. NEC at NEC has always been a tough game. They'll be all jacked up for that one and they are probably the hottest team in the league right now.

Castleton and Skidmore are never easy. Especially Skidmore always seems to give us issues in their barn.

Lot of hockey left to be played before that big final home weekend.

Really like the games that Pichette and Ermakov played today.

I have to agree. I've seen NEC on the net a few times this year. In general even before this year you are correct, they can be really hard to beat in their house, especially when they play the kind of punk hockey that I always associate with them. They get away with a lot it seems sometimes, and often the Cadets have let that get in their heads. They are exactly the kind of team that can give the current bunch problems. The key is not to let adversity get them down if they fall behind. So far this season, that (and the anemic power play) have been the biggest problem. They are great front-runners, but not so good at coming back from the edge of a loss.

I still don't get the power play - knowing McShane, I am certain he hasn't changed his teaching in that regard, but this team and last year's team just isn't learning the lesson - but watching those stretches when they controlled the play in the o-zone 5x5, the puck movement and player movement was textbook power play work. Why should they do it right 5x5 and then slow down to a crawl 5x4? I just don't get it. You gotta make the other team move their feet and open up holes. You can't do that standing around.

I hope I didn't leave the impression on my last post that I thought NU had a cake walk right through to the last weekend with Babson and UMass. To the contrary, I believe the ECAC-E is more competitive than ever and that any team in our conference that does not focus on just the next game may be sitting out the play offs later in the seasons. The ECAC E is now like the NFL, e.g. "in any game, on any given weekend, any team ECAC-E can take it.....":o

As for NEC: This is not the first time I have agreed with NUProf regarding the way NEC has played NU in the past--they always seem to be on the edge of "goonism" (is that a word?). My fear is this new NU team seems to be a more physical than others in the past which means our boys have to be careful about retaliation regardless of the score. In terms of penalty minutes NEC is right up there with UMass. NU has to play their game and not play into NECs hands.

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

I'm not sure if our guys are more physical, or less mature (I'm betting on the latter). I can remember a lot of physical defensemen that we used to have back in the day who could manage aggression in a way that didn't hurt the team. Guys like Toza Crniolvic, who was really strong, did take a number of penalties (when he was in one of my classes, I would tease him about some of them, in fact), but rarely did Toza's penalty minutes really hurt the team at the wrong time like some we have seen this year in the losses.

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

The wild card this weekend against NEC is there small rink. Watching a game is different because there is so little room between the two blue lines so all NEC does is drive the puck into the zone, forecheck, and wait for a break. Too bad NEC can't play there games in Sullivan Area (St. A's) which is one of the best D3 rinks in the east.

SNC faces the same issue with a small neutral zone when we play @ Lake Forest...just need to adjust to it..

Why would they want to play at St Anselm. They have an on campus rink that they practice on and which due to its size gives them an advantage. I would think they would build their team around the ice surface they have and try their best to exploit it.

Thats part of the beauty of non-regulations for rink surfaces in college hockey.

When Manhattanville played at the Playland, they absolutely recruited to their rink specs. 208x77 ice surface made for A LOT of big defensemen that could lay the boom. They also trapped the neutral zone and as you can imagine, five guys across 77 feet means not much space to work with at all.

No comments on last night's game folks?
I thought the guys got ambushed by a great first seven minutes from NEC ... then played well. But again had trouble finishing. The comeback in the third period (Down 3-1 back to 3-3) was exciting, but then couldn't finish the deal. We did catch a break with Babson only getting a tie (Thank your local Castleton fan today) ... but now we are dead even with the Beavers with five games to go. Your thoughts?

Got to beat Saint A's today.

Also, as long as Norwich can beat babson. They can lose another game and still win the league.
