Norwich 14-15

Re: Norwich 14-15

Don't care where you got the idea ... love it!
But make the gold the softer "old" gold though rather than "yellow" gold.

haha I'm glad you approve George. Definitely would rather the 'Vegas' gold over the yellow. They tried something kinda similar back in the first year we played at Frozen Fenway. Gold of the jersey had a weird tint though and the names and numbers were an extremely weird font...They didn't even end up wearing them at Frozen Fenway.

Re: Norwich 14-15

ahhh man....still have a bad taste in my mouth after that one. This one is going to take some time getting over...probably the hardest outcome to a game I've seen since the 2002 National Championship at Midd that some people have been bringing up. That one was a stinger and this one just isn't settling with me. No disrespect to a great Amherst team but I still feel like the better team will be left at home next weekend...but so is hockey. Tough bounce on the last one and a couple things done differently in that final 48 seconds and we are planning our trips out West right now.

Enough said there but great season by the Cadets. Was a fun group to watch and I'll miss the seniors greatly. The strong blue line leaders of Hale, Theida and Currier; The all our grinder and the smallest enforcer I've ever seen in Lawler; McCeleney's snipes will surely be missed; and lastly Matic who tended in the nets in previous years when we needed him most and in the comeback win over Skidmore this year. Will be hard to replace these fellas but looking forward to seeing what Norwich can come up with.

We definitely had a great group of seniors. Not sure if it has been mentioned, but I believe that all of our senior skaters reached career highs in points! Also, Matic Marinsek handled his situation this season like a true professional and great teammate. He won some big games for the cadets, none bigger than his 1-0 win over Plattsburgh at their rink. Congratulations to our seniors, and the rest of the cadets for an outstanding season!!

Great catch on that. I knew most of them had posted career highs, but I didn't know all of them did. That's definitely saying something for how this senior class performed and led a very young team to the brink of the final four.

Next year's leadership has big shoes to fill. This year's group not only did a great job on the ice, they also did a great job off it, reinvigerating and reconnecting with the community, school and younger crowd with various events. Hopefully that message is passed down.

The following were the goal scorer's for Norwich in there last 4 games:
William Pelletier 3
Austin Surowiec 1
Dean Niezgoda 2
Justin Charbonneau 1
Corey Hale 1
Bruce Currier 1
Nick Pichette 1
Dimitry Ermakov 1

The stats point that the first line was by was far the most productive in the playoffs when the checking is a lot more closer. With Norwich losing 3 outstanding D men the Norwich recruiting staff has got a big job ahead of them. Reading a Boston Bruin article the writer was talking about the Bruins not scoring much with there high shot total and suggested that more traffic was needed in front of the net. From the Norwich/Amherst game you got to recall all the Amherst big guys crashing the net to tie the game. A couple more big guys to crash the net should help Norwich

Winning a face off would have helped.

It's a great thing that the top line is returning. I believe there is a very good nucleus returning, but as you mentioned, we are losing tons of experience on the blue line. It will be strange not seeing those 3 in the line up next season. But, as in years past, Norwich always finds a way to replace their seniors, and usually someone always steps up and rises to become a leader. I'm sure people were wondering how to replace a great player like Janke, and in steps Pelletier. The priority should be filling the gaps on def, and a couple of big forwards as you mentioned.

Let's not forget there were some good players that weren't even in the lineup toward the end of the year.

Paul Russell has proven to be a capable 10-15 goal scorer, Ermakov shows flashes of potential, Brendan Boyce had a pretty good first half of the season before being replaced by Byrne.

I think Connor Evangelista will certainly compete for a starting spot next year on defense too. The cupboard is hardly bare and I'm sure we'll get the standard 6-8 recruits again this year.

I was a fan of Evangelista when he played. Not sure if he was hurt, or a victim of numbers, but he should be a good one. That being said, we need some size back there to replace Hale 6'1" and Currier 6'2".

Was going to mention Evangelista earlier as well. I thought he did very well in the early going and definitely think he will be a bigger part next year. Also very excited to see Brandrup progress. He was great this year and played like an upperclassman at times so I'm looking for him to step up big as now he is a sophomore in a very wide open defense.

As far as Hale and Currier go...I'm not sure. Hale was a great two way player who always gave it his all. Currier was just...Currier. My dad and I loved how he always would skate up to the blue line when he was called as the starting dman and just grill the away team...even if he was standing totally alone for the first couple seconds. He had that attitude...I'm not sure if it was from being around Vermont his whole life and knowing more about Norwich and being genuinely proud to be there or what it was but he always had that look that 'this is our house and you gotta get by me (us)'. He played similar on the ice, always was working hard and making some outstanding poke checks or taking the body and was always there to back up his teammates. I didn't think it was in a bully way either, just always was there to let someone know who he was if they took a cheap shot or were disrespecting the game.

Personally I would always want a guy like that on the team so I'm looking for a dMan specifically to step up and play this role as well. Saw it from Pelletier and Niezgoda a lot this year actually...and the whole team for that fact. I liked how tight knit they were and were always backing each other up. Excited for next year and hoping we can get some recruits to fill these very big shoes.

There are a lot of things that 20+ years of Norwich hockey has made me confident in. Some, probably too confident. But among them is the fact that Wick's hockey recruiting skill has been nothing short of brilliant for a long time, often times recognizing what I call the "Tom Brady Effect" in players - may not have stunned folks leading up to the draft, but certainly pay off for the franchise over the length of their career.

Thanks for all you do George! It's awesome having such great content and media sources for the team. As Coach said, tough one to let go as I think we all felt we were in the running this year. Great season and looking forward to next year.

Re: Norwich 14-15

Could you tell me if there is a way to listen to your interview on tape, I missed it. Thanks George

Re: Norwich 14-15

Congrats to William Pelletier (1st Team) and Alec Thieda (2nd Team) on being named AHCA East Region All-Americans!

Congratulations to them for an awesome season!

While understanding why they do it this way, I find it kind of ironic that there are separate Eastern and Western teams for "All-Americans".

Agreed. I LOVE college hockey, and I love Norwich hockey, so I'm not trying to diminish anyone's accomplishments at all, but I can't see how a "Regional All-American" = All-American. It's goofy.

At least there aren't 345 outlets that publish "All-Americans" lists for hockey like some other college sports (IE: football. :))

And better yet list 250 players on First Team.

Correct, although any self-respecting football fan should know which teams are legit.

Taking football out of the equation, I still don't agree with regional All-Americans. Isn't that "all-region"?

Listen, I think we have AT LEAST one legitimate all-America candidate at Norwich just about every single year. I am not trying to take away from Will or Alec, who, IMO, should be all-America candidates under ANY classifying system. To me, this is a conversation about the process as a whole.

Fact is, aside from BS football websites, every other sport names a true "All-American" team and I just wonder why hockey does it differently.

Don't be so sensitive, Prez ;)

Re: Norwich 14-15

D3 Hockey does not play a national schedule - going west or coming east for a tourney and a couple games can't give you a clear picture of how players stack up across the East/West divide...conferences within the same region are tough enough....unless you want to let the computer do it (best stats win), this is the next best thing...I believer that is what Prez was about to say....:D
