Northeastern Huskies 2017-18: Every Dog Has its Day

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2017-18: Every Dog Has its Day

on a different note, hope all the head colds & viruses and illness is behind the team and they can get a full week of (good) practices in.
Friday home gm against a always prepared PC team. Hoping for split or better. This will be much like the Maine series.
Go Huskies

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2017-18: Every Dog Has its Day

It's a travesty that the team is playing the best arguably ever, and no one, not students or general public, is coming to watch. It's revolting how anyone responsible for outreach doesn't think of ways to get people to the game. Konya has some work to do

Matthews is one of my favorite rinks. And the Huskies are very good this year. As a non-NU fan, that is unthinkable.

The Huskies have had attendance issues since the late 2000s, but the apparent purge of people who go to games the last 2-4 years has been unthinkable, to me at least. When I ran the student section I noticed declining student numbers, while the general public numbers were usually stable. Low, but stable. Now it almost feels like we need to pay people to come watch. The student section is never full unless it's against BU or BC. The lower bowl is a wasteland. The rest of the balcony usually doesn't do too bad...but it's blasphemous to me that it has gotten to this point.

It's not just hockey either. Men's basketball, the 2nd most beloved program on campus, is 2nd-worst in the CAA in terms of average home attendance, barely over 1100. Women's soccer, who has won multiple conference championships in the last 5 years, dead last in the CAA. Less than 200 per game. Men's soccer, 2nd to last in the CAA. It's a systemic issue. It's not just one sport.

Agreed. I am no longer suprised by the continuous poor attendance but I am still very disappointed. Just looking at forwards, the team has 3 outstanding ones in no particular order - Sikura, Gaudette, and Stevens. Each of them is very talented and they are just part of what makes this team so good. Yet, too few seem to notice or care. The only positive that I see is that NU has a new AD who may or may want to do something about stiring up some school spirit for sporting events. Maybe that would be a good topic to bring up with him. If he shows up at Matthews, I would love to discuss it with him.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2017-18: Every Dog Has its Day

There are other threads on this and other forums where the subject of declining attendance is discussed ad nauseum. Probably the biggest issue is that the generation that comprises current and recent undergrads has become increasingly indifferent to and uninterested in competitive sports. Lots of reasons for this including Netflix, social media, video games, etc., etc., etc. And for urban schools like NU, plenty of things to compete for kids' time, interest, and $$$$. It's not just NU either. I was shocked at the numbers of empty seats I saw watching college football this fall.

It's affecting the pros too. MLB has been on a downtrend and the numbers of empty seats showing on televised NBA and NHL games is becoming embarrassing.

All of that being said, the lack of interest in what might be the greatest team in NU hockey history is beyond words.

Agreed. I'd love to pose the question to him in an open forum. I hope he will be more accessible to the fan base than Roby was.

.. all good points.

I want to add, the workload (course load/ assignments etc) at the U. has also gone up considerably. With the cost of education now, cost of housing in the city, the exams, outside distractions, more of these kids are taking it seriously and the downtime they do have... now has all the other choices you mentioned; competing for that.

I think the new AD will be good for the U. and will hopefully find ways to get a healthy balance so they can 'up' the current #s and can improve the experience as a win-win. Making it a fun sports environment for the competitive teams (and the fans) again. Least i hope so! Go Huskies :)

PC is so basketball first that that's the prime reason for any and all attendance issues (The Providence Bruins are number 2. Brown can't draw people to Meehan either). We can't help ourselves but schedule basketball and hockey games at the same time. The attendance at the Dunk is insanely good. And it will still be good even if they get disemboweled by Villanova tonight.
There's way too empty seats at the Coffin. Even against BU or BC. It's ridiculous.

If it's any consolation, I've been trying to line up some tickets for the NU game on Saturday, and have been told both online and via email there is a 'limited' number of tickets available for that game. So I'm hoping for a good crowd.

It might say that but many PC season ticket holders don't show up for games against anyone NOT named BC/BU.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2017-18: Every Dog Has its Day

Looks like the new AD is already upping the anti of promotional items with the Kenny Chesney ticket giveaway to go along cowboy hats and country themed night, which is big amongst college kids these days. Hopefully he has some new and fresh ideas to draw larger crowds as it's a shame that the numbers are this low with the amount of talent on this roster. Could very well be the best NU team of all time and at the very least since the 80s. Want to see 2 convincing Ws this weekend, will be content with a split and anything else will be a let down.

Wow! Jeff Konya must be really good to be getting credit for making things happen before he even reports for duty on Feb 1. But totally agree that this is an historically good team that is going all but unnoticed both on-campus and in the Boston sports media. Hopefully, the new boss has the chops to fix what's broken, including relationships with the broad fanbase.

The Beanpot on Feb. 5 should be a good eye-opener.

TBH I imagine Konya has already done some work for the school, and wants to hit the ground running. He doesn't strike me as they type to sit idle waiting for time to pass. I can't remember any promotions like the Chesney tickets in years past with Roby/anyone else in charge of marketing. It's a nice touch that may draw a couple extra kids. I wanna go for the hat and the chance at the tickets but I don't get out of work until late that day. Not sure how well country music will jive with hockey but it's better than some of the other promos we've seen in years past

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2017-18: Every Dog Has its Day

As one poster over on Diehard Dogs presciently pointed out, "We have been very good this season, but we've thus far botched several chances to be great." This weekend's series vs Providence and the coming Beanpot present great chances for this very talented team to take that next step.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2017-18: Every Dog Has its Day

The difference between 13th and 9th right now is simply beating Bentley or RIT when we only tied them. We could be 8th if we had won a game against Quinnipiac, or UConn, or @UMass. A single game is 5 positions in PWR.

I think we've lost opportunities more then have had good things fall in our lap this season. The games I mentioned above were all lost opportunities. The only times I felt like we were a bit fortunate in games were home against Lowell and UVM. Thinking about it that way gives me hope that we are a really good team. But you could also look at it the other way and say our schedule has been garbage this season.

PC is a big test.
