Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I'm somewhere in the middle on this one. I think this team is better than Cronin's 3 win/first year team, but not as good a team as "Rossi" seems to believe it is. As Bill Parcells used to say - "you are what your record says you are". This team isn't nearly as good as the team that missed the playoffs two seasons ago. Lack of offensive firepower, poor special teams (do we lead College Hockey in shorthanded goals allowed?), iffy goaltending, and questionable direction from the Administration. Given all of that, why even hammer Madigan and staff? Let things play out (as if we have a choice) and see how next year develops. There has to be some positive growth next season, or maybe it will be time to drag the Coaches into question, too.

Not that it matters, but I think this team would have been a playoff team if Cody Ferriero plays 33 games instead of 17. He showed he can be a quality top 6 forward in HE this year. That said, finishing out the year 1-5-2 is squarely on the shoulders of the coaching staff.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Good for UMass.. we've not been too kind to them several times over the last seasons, having knocked them out of the playoffs 2 or 3 times.. (as with BU last season). Bottom line.. even if we were to muster something this wknd.. without sound goaltending it would not take us far. It is a fitting end to a dismal performance between the pipes in key games throughout the year. Couple that with some unfortunate injuries & early departures (Vrolyk, Ferreiro, Quailer until last wknd, Oleksiak, Newton, Reid etc.- i'm not even going to mention losing Gaudreau ..wait, i just did..) & we did not have the depth to begin with.

Cronin left very late.. Madigan came in very late.. bottomline, he does deserve another chance (just my opinion) with the cards he & staff were dealt.

Not sure what to think of nxt season or NU hockey right now.. wait.. we could be #1 in starting the first offseason thread.. :).
Least the better half of the Huskies had (and are having) a super season. View the glass half full.. always.. that & learn to take 'no' for an answer :)!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

1 season.... Cronin had 3 wins in his first season. Give the man some time.

I think people forget that when Cronin took over the program, the team was in utter shambles thanks to years of misery under Bruce Crowder and everyone expected there to be a couple of difficult seasons early on. On the other hand, Madigan inherited a team that has a lot of talented players and in my opinion, should have been able to at least make the HE playoffs. I'm all for giving the guy a chance, and at this point they have to allow him to recruit his own type of players for the next three or four years to see what he can do, however, I still find it hard to believe that a guy who hasn't been behind a bench in over 20 years was the best possible candidate for a head coaching job.

I was kind of surprised when they hired him for that reason after Cronin improved the program and left. You want a coach who can attract good recruits to the program. Who is Madigan going to attract with his limited track record???? Sure give him a chance and 3-4 years but I thought it risky not going with a real experienced coach and one with name recognition like when Notre Dame hired Jackson. Now it looks like you're rebuilding again with the players leaving recently and recruits changing their minds.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I think you are all nutz! This was a talented team, that was picked to be 5th or 6th place. It had a 3rd year goalie and was returning plenty of seasoned players and added both Cody Ferrio and Viinny Sapp..you have to be kidding me, this ending is a disaster! If this guy, Madigan had been managing director at any major company in the US he would be out on his proverbial arse right now. I mean really, I want to give a guy a chance but he is not the guy. He has no fire, no motivational ability, however, let's face it, the real fault is with Roby, who is responsible for this horrific decision, the disaster of the basketball team also rests squarely on his shoulders with another not for prime time hiring at that programs helm.

Any nice guy can get a job, and they all seem qualified on paper perhaps but not one of these guys Roby, Madigan or Coen deserves to be coaching at this level at the NU of the 21st century. No way! Arguably we are talking in hockey the nations most elite division and perhaps in basketball a real powerhouse of a mid major that will send 2 teams or perhaps even 3 teams to the tournament in Drexel, VCU and George Mason.

Both teams are utterly disappointing and no amount of oh let's give him a chance chants will rescue this team from the bowls of mediocrity. The 2nd chance chant crowd should all be put out with the trash too. The goals in hockey are simple to win, win HE, win a Beanpot and win a national championship.

If you are in the lets give him another chance crowd, you are all part of the problem, the years of oh we tried hard crew are over what a load of crap, did all your parents save your 6th fing place trophies too. Grow up. It’s now or never.

Winning starts with a zero tolerance policy with regard to losing, that starts with a national search for a coach or even if needed, a world wide search!

We don’t need a New England guy or a guy with strong ties to the university anymore because here is a newsflash, the university’s student body is now all mostly form places other than New England and they don’t give a fat rats *** if the powers that be picked a local with ties to the university to be a coach

So here is a novel idea, just pick the most qualified candidate after an exhaustive search of looking under every stone till you reach the ends of the earth for the right guy!

forgot to mention Mike McLaughlin out with a concussion since last wknd.... Rossi, love reading your posts..that being said, take a chill pill, give it a few hours..comeback and share more thoughts then.. Can't call for a man's head 7 months into it..give him a couple co ops at least :). Nxt yr this time if we're in the same predicament..you'll get more votes. :)

Appreciate the sentiment but there's only one senior and he's out with a concussion.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

of course I am, I hate it when we lose to bad teams.

gotta admit though, its funny to see you still trolling our threads worried about what we might be saying about you.

So, bad team? Obviously you were talking about Northeastern and not Lowell. One has home ice and will be in the NCAAs... one is playing their final game of the season tonight. Nice try though.

Speaking of Cronin, I wonder what his future looks like in Toronto after the Leaf's fired head coach Ron Wilson yesterday.

I agree, I tend to agree with Rossi but we are far apart on this. I just do not think this team is that good. Their goalie really let them down in the second half. Word on incoming players is good, we'll see who leaves but other than Sapanori, I would not be disappointed on seeing any of these guys jump. You are what you are, a 9th place team. Can't blame the coachs for everything. That's an easy out.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

If NU loses they potentially fall out of the PWR, meaning all the HEA teams in contention for the NCAA's lose a team matchup of 2-1 or better. It's sort of like the anti-spoiler. Is it bad that I'm hoping for a loss tonight?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I am going to the game tonight anyway, not sure why other than I have to use up the dimes on the parking pass in the Gainsbourgh lot before the end of the season. Not sure I care if they win because I want BU to win HE over BC I am just very disappointed right now in the whole outcome. Madigan looks allot like Ken Ley did during his press conferences at Enron! He has aged 5 years in 9 months! I say baring any miracle he is gone in 2 or 3 years tops! It's been nice to vent on this blog...time to close it down, start the off season blog and look forwared to the future however bleak it may be! Talk to you all in October!

I'm somewhere in the middle on this one. I think this team is better than Cronin's 3 win/first year team, but not as good a team as "Rossi" seems to believe it is. .

Think? This years team would have routed Cronin's first year team by over 10 goals. Think this years goaltending was bad, remember who was in goal then, actually don't. (the fat Canadian kid and the goaltending coaches kid from bu) Captain of that team, the immortal Chucky Tomes. Please, that team took a penalty every 5 minutes, if I remember correctly they almost had 800 PIMS that year. Our 2nd dpairing was Jacquet Perreault and Andrew Linard. This years team would skate right by them in a flash. Kinda like Oskroba for us this year. Only way that team would have a chance is if Perreault hit everyone from behind, which was the only skill he had.

That was a team that was 100% decimated by seniors graduating. Judy, Grover, Guerriero, Morris, and most of all Gibson.

Anyway. Fun game tonight. Nice of them to finally show some balls and not let a goal or two get them down. A little fight for a change. Maybe something they can carry into next season. If the coaching staff can figure out how to coach, we could be ok.

This is a pretty talented freshmen class, Reid, Manno and Karlsson. All three had pretty good seasons. Reid is turning into a guy you can count on in every situation. Got lots of PP and PK time down the stretch. Responsible kid, and a true freshmen at 18. He gets stronger, and a bit smarter (has a tendacy to make dumb passes in our own end), he could be very, very good. Might not be a better guy in small spaces in the league. Manno has a great first step and top notch speed. Needs to work on finishing and shooting from outside the circles, but was probably the only forward to constantly finish his checks all year. He even started to play with his teamates as the season went on. Karlsson faded after along with his whole line. Not really sure he is a point man on the PP like they played him, but his first three months were better then his last three months so we will probably get another year out of him. Kinda the opposite season that Brodie had last year.

Next years class as it stands looks good, though i am 50/50 on if the goalie comes. I would not blame him if he wanted to go play for Roy, i mean, who would not want to play for one of the greatest goalies of all time as a goalie, even if the guy is supposedly a major *****. Maybe we get lucky and Roy gets the Canadians coaching gig and Gillies comes to us. Not holding my breathe though.

Anyway, Tuck and Quailer sure looked like they were going to leave after the game. Wonder who else is going to join them. We will have one thing in common with the team that wins the NC this year. Our team and the NC will be the only teams to win their last game of the year.

There could be additional company if one of the teams that wins a conference consolation game doesn't make the NCAA tournament.
