Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Student tickets already sold out for Saturday, and I've heard that regular tickets are pretty close to selling out. BC bought a section and the parents tickets have been sold out for weeks. I'm guessing a sellout.

Incidentally, I used to do a recruit roundup here, and since it looks like the recruit and regular page are being merged, I'll occaisonally put stuff here. I also have the recruits with what stats I can find here:

http://maddoghouse.wordpress.com/northeastern-recruits/

Prep school stats are harder to find but I'll do what I can.

Merrimack has played two games so far. They won a nice one up in Maine, and then had their annual beat down of Army, the night after Army played a home game and had to travel here to play the next day. (I am guessing that Merrimack is unAmerican institution for how they treat one of our service schools every year)

Are they playing well? No idea. To small of a sample size to tell. We do know that they will look to turtle, and they do a great job of it. They will look to work the puck down low and cycle for offense. We know they will block a ton of shots. We know that they are missing their offensive catalyst from the previous few seasons, but bring back some forwards with some pop.

All the games last year were one goal games. We won at their place they won both at ours, one in OT. I like the matchup, size wise we matchup with them, and outside of a guy or two, can play along the boards with them. We handled their stretch pass pretty well, and it comes down to if NU can get enough open looks for good shots. Their defense is very disciplined, does not jump in the play much so getting odd man rushes are hard to come by, if we get them, we need to score on them.

They need to find offense more then we do at this point, 5 goals in 2 games is nice, but really with Army on the schedule I would have expected more then a 3-2 win, so I am tipping towards NU finding a way to get some points up in North Andover Friday night. I think we have better forwards whether or not Cody is in the lineup, and I think our freshmen class that we start up front is going to surprise some teams their first pass through Hockey East. I think all three guys that played over the weekend are going to be key contributors before the year is out. Karlsson is going to be a load for teams to handle, Reid is going surprise some teams with how well he plays in the corners and how composed his game is he was really calm and in control Friday night, and Manno who looks the farthest away of the three, once he gets a feel for this is going to be Brodie Reid like and put up some points as teams look to key on other guys. JG might have been the cherry on top if he came, but these three are going to be a nice goodbye gift from Cronin who should pay some major dividends to the new coaching staff.

As for a crowd up there, NU is one of those teams that is used to playing in front of a crowd that is right on top of you. I do not think our teams is going to go into a shell because of 1800 people in a small building. They can play a nice composed game and take care of business.

Merrimack is still a threat to land home ice, especially as UNH plays the part of a dead fish, but we have played with confidence against them before, typically do not take them lightly and I expect them to be the same on Friday.

Get used to seeing the Warriors too. 3 out of the next 5 games are against them. Come 11/5, unless we meet in the playoffs we won't see them again until the 2012 season!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

..it's also Homecoming for them, so i suspect a nice crowd. Heck they even have fireworks planned before the game.. (no kidding).
..well, long as the fireworks are before the gm & not during.. i'm fine with that. I think their HC will have them ready though. Sure hope we are as well.

Go Huskies! (play disciplined ..save the fireworks):)

The reason they always play Army is because of a relationship with old AD, Shawn Frazier. He was close with Army and their AD and coach when he was with Clarkson. He introduced MC head coach to them at the annual Derek Hines golf outing, which Merrimack and MD have always supported. Very good relationship between the two

Nothing better than watching the work ethic and team game Army plays...

Interesting, but I will stick with the theory that they are Un-American.

I wouldnt.

MD when he was a coach at U Mass was very close to this player. PT established this fund http://www.mslfund.org/peter-trovato.php and has done a great job with it.

Dennehy has also been involved in this org www.derekhinesfund.org and has supported at their outings, which is where spent some time with current head coach Brian Riley and the AD. Between MD and Frazier, a relationship was furthered and it is a quality one. Derek Hines is the ex Army hockey player and captain who lost is life in the current war. The NCAA named the unsung hero award after him. an honor handed out each year. MD hooked the two orgs up and they have done a lot of good things through the association

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Along with what I consider to be the worst "fans" in Hockey East.

I would not go that far. I like their program and their fans. As a NU fan since I started at the school in 96, I actually have enjoyed the Merrimack rise over the last few years. I kinda feel a connection to their fans as a team that will never get respect no matter what they accomplish and will always be a feel good story. (unlike their school though I am Pro-America and would frown upon our school beating up on a military school unless it was in the NCAA tournament). Hockey East waters are tough to trend in, us schools with lesser histories need to show the proper amount of respect and show admiration when one of us rises up to knock off the establishment, because the establishment really runs things here and goes out of their way to make sure they stay on top.

Worst fans would be UML. Hands down. Nothing good about a UML fan. From there the Comm ave teams fans because all the winning has left them to feel entitled to winning, and they don't bother to show up for the premier program at their school. There are more old folks and families at their games then actual students who are not involved with the pep band. I went to Game 3 at the HAG last year. Spring break or not, pathetic that i could get a ticket, and that NU kids had more students.

But I do not feel like getting into whose a better fan war right now. NU is on a roll right now with the hockey team drawing very well. Its an event every week. I think a part of that is we always see ourselves as underdogs, and underdogs draw. At some point though, one would hope we become the hunted, the elite, and it will be interesting to see if we can draw like a top ACC bball team does from the Carolinas, or we go the Comm ave way and only bring in students when the big boys come to town.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

MC beat them 3-2, Union beat them 8-1 and U Conn 5-0. seems like good hosting by MC to me...

Last year MC beat them in OT and the year before they won 6-3 and the year before Army outshot them 44-21 and lost 1-0 in a great game at Army.

It is a great take to play Army and watch their kids. They are D 1 athletes(and a lot more) and love the chance to play top programs. I wouldnt worry about their feelings being hurt, perspective is to good for that.

You have your opinion, I have mine.

So you'd rather no good teams play them? Just let them play AHA teams and then low level ECAC teams? Now that would be un-American. Navy football team plays Notre Dame every year, as well as some other pretty solid BCS conference teams. These military academy teams are tough and will be the leaders of tomorrow. They don't want anyone's sympathy. I played prep hockey with a kid who ended up playing for Army. He'd have been horrified at your attitude.

Exactly... Patronizing to think a team is above playing them. It is a pleasure to watch Army hockey and gives the other teams fans a chance to show appreciation and gain some perspective.

If you show up unprepared, you will lose.

they beat Miami of Ohio, lost in OT to Dartmouth, beat RPI, beat u mass and others over past few years. Put it this way, if Northeastern called and asked to play, it would be years out before they could get on schedule.

Watch this video and tell me if the Army kids would want the challenge of playing a better team... http://www.derekhinesfund.org/ncaaAOV.htm

The only argument you'd have is if Merrimack (or another like team) was way up in the third period and still had their big guns out on the PP trying to run up the score. Also, CC and Denver play Air Force every year. North Dakota only beat AFA by a single goal at home in the Ice Breaker. I'm sure those teams are un-American too. Air Force lost to big powerful Big 10 school Michigan State in OT. They beat Yale last year. Get a grip.

I'd much rather play Army than Bentley. (NU played Bentley three years in a row)

i think most are in agreement that NU has great fans, student fans, but when you consistently have half the building empty and have many "crowds" under 2000 it's hard to understand why you are throwing rocks down Comm Ave........... seems to me that with an enrollment as large as NU that there should be more of all kinds of NU fans filling up the old barn, students as well as alumni.......
