Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Dongara is a hard worker, but perhaps Madigan is giving someone else a chance.. sending a message.. shaking up lines.. who knows?
Is this health related?

Of course fans care (least this fan does) .. but with Quailer & Karlsson coming back.. hopefully it will limit the damage. I have hardly, if ever, seen Dongara take a shift off. His size works against him at times, but he has to overcome that. I am sure he'll work it out. It's his decision making at times.. passing in particular, that leaves something to be desired. Maybe Coach just wants him to think it over (conjecture on my part :) ). Regardless, i know he will find his way back in the line up sooner rather than later.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Nope. Marginal player with top speed but that is about it. He can sit in the section named after him and probably provide the same out of offense as he did last weekend. Maybe a bit more since he cannot pass for his life, thus less turnovers.

I agree normally but against a UNH we need a high energy guy like him on the ice. Idk I guess with Quailer back this won't hurt too much...

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Dongara is one of the hardest working guy out there. I agree with the passing issue though. I think the line he was on this past weekend was just to small. He's always fun to watch though and he's always trying to make a play, which is what we need. It seems to me like he's the kind of guy that infuses energy to the rest of the team. Unfortunate that he probably won't play this weekend.

As for WITT, I don't want to see him take over (not just yet) but i would like to see him in more of a rotation. I think Witt's biggest issue is his poor ability to control his lateral movement. Frequently, I see him come across the crease only to be way out of position after the initial save. And thats something to work on, BUT, it always seems that Rawlings lets in the "easy" goal or the "dumb" goal, shots that should be handled but end up as juicy rebounds or rawlings having no idea where the puck is behind him. (he has improved on that aspect since his freshman year.) I just think witt, although he's more aggressive and thusly somewhat sloppier, should get more starts. And to respond to the "when to play him?" discussion, Give him a big stage, see if he can handle it. Thats the reality, you can't just throw him in against PC or UML. You need to start him against the BU or BC type teams to see how he does. Maybe once we have a home&home we'll see witt one night, and rawlings the other. But hey, As far as I'm concerned, he CAN handle it. He looked solid against BC at he HE Semi's after cro pulled rawlings last year. Yes he let in a goal, but he got pulled out of position and looked very solid otherwise.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Why in the world do we need a high energy player against UNH? Or anybody?

NU is not putting out a bunch of plodders out there. Team speed is not an issue, nor would I hope is "energy"

I have also always found that hard working forwards = limited skill set = few points on the board. I could work hard out there too. Does not mean I would be a hockey east level college hockey player.

Nothing against the kid, he is fun to watch blowing by other players, but I would not consider him a big loss if he is up in the stands.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

With all due respect for Dongara, he is simply lacking in certain areas of the game. He is a larger stronger more offensive version of Brian Esner, but lacks Esner's free skating ability which allowed him to become a fearsome forechecker and PK guy by his senior year. Dong is probably faster going in a straight line. Unfortunately, that's how he tries to play all the time. He needs to develop more shiftiness and awareness of his teammates. He has to learn that blinding speed does not work all the time. The analogy that comes to mind is that of the great sprinter who puts on a FB uniform and gets hammered when he outruns his blocking. IDK what Jimmy is trying to tell him, but he may benefit from an overhead view of the game. I can't remember the last time a first liner (?) has been a healthy scratch after just two games - unless there is a disciplinary problem. Perhaps he wanted to wear that silly hat of his in a game instead of a helmet.;)

OTOH, I do have a problem with Rawlings. After 2+ years of watching him, I still am uncomfortable when he is in net. His inabilty, at times, to know where he is in his crease has allowed shooters space on the edges to shoot and score. Rawlings doesn't move as he thinks he got the angle covered. He gives up goals on snap shots that he doesn't anticipate or where his concentration has waned. I am particularly edgy when he has a one goal lead late in a game. I think back to the two UNH games in late 2010 where he gave up several late goals that allowed UNH to come from behind and win both games. Even a single tie would have put us in the playoffs. He followed that with a stinko performance against bu. You know the rest.

Witt has mostly had a mop-up roll, but has played well when allowed to start. He plays as though each goal he allows will cost him something from vital below his waist. I wonder if he is as focused in practice as he is in the games. In addition, Rawlings has been making noises about turning pro. I want a game-experiences goalie waiting in the wings, who is used to playing behind our sometimes peculiar form of defense (a great subject for a future rant!).

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Why not give Mountain a shot? a) I liked what I saw of him in the pre-season game b) He's had the opportunity to start and win a game (as opposed to coming in during the 2nd or 3rd to clean things up, which he has done) against Merrimack in '09 c) As the 3rd string goalie he hopefully works his ***** off in practices. Throw him a bone and give him an away game at Providence or Lowell. If anything, it would be a wake-up call for the other two goalies to step up their ****.

And yes, fans do care about Dongara - the "dong house" corner will not be happy to see him on the sidelines.

This was a joke post right?

Not entirely fair. He lost the game up at UNH up 2-1 going into the third I think 3-2. NU got what, 10 shots on net that game and turtled the rest of the way which is not going to get it done @ UNH. Oh ya, he was also a freshmen. He played well there, and the night before. Yes, bu blew him out, but we could have still lost that game, and made the playoffs if the Maine goalie had not gotten drunk and suspended and somehow Maine got swept at home by I think UMASS to make the playoffs.

Us not making the playoffs that year took about as much luck as the Sox missing out this year. Everything had to fall into place right for UMASS, and it did.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Heisenberg is showing another new recruit, Zach Aston-Reese, from the Lincoln Stars, for 2013. His stats aren't eye-popping by any means, but I'm sure our coaches must have seen something in his game to go after him. Has anyone seen him play?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

He is young still ('94 dob).
Interestingly, he was committed to play at Brown.. i'm sure one of our assistants had something to do with his decision to come play at NU. Nice job :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Head to Matthews now and catch your undefeated WIH team vs. Union at 3 pm before the UNH game.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Really really good sign to see how many adjustments (especially defensively) Coach Madigan made tonight against UNH. Quailer and Karlsson also bring a lot to our line-up. I thought Danny Cornell looked a lot better than Oskroba and I feel that he earned the start next week. Good to get our first win, lets keep it going against the BC Eagles.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Ok, I was at the game tonight with some good Jr players form both the Boston Jr Bruins and the South Shore Kings and I may have to admit, I was surprised. NU skated a woeful 1st period and was out shot by a wide margin however, with some sloppy NH goaltending and some ferotious NU hustle to the pucks in front of the net they came out of the period 3-0. Granted as a creature of habbit, I was still not comfortable, then to my astonishment they settled down and played 2 solid periods of the best hockey in the offensive zone I have seen since 2009 and then back to the 1980’s. However, I noticed something very strange as I watched and waited in the front row of Section 50 for an classic NU unraveling that thankfully never transpired. The team is disciplined, the most disciplined hockey I have seen in 20 years. Lots of smart play, no giving up odd man rushes, control through the neutral zone and then, dumping when no good opportunity presented itself to allow fresh legs on the ice. It was like watching a clinic on fore checking and cycling! Clearly, the top NH players, were, for the most part, better skaters, faster, & better stick handlers, but tonight they weren't better hockey players and they were not a better team by any stretch of the imagination. They pressed on 2 or 3 power plays and NU answered the call like they haven’t done in decades. Nice job boys! Also, Chris made some great saves and turned away perhaps 27 shots, However, aside from 1 cross bar and another one or two through the crease, NH was never really even close to scoring a goal, Why? because if Rawlings has a chance to square up and see the puck he might be one of the best goalies in the country he is so big that its like shooting a slap shot into a garage door, He was technically near perfect, with rebound control and the best lateral movement I have seen in him since the BU opener a couple years back. The d got out of his sight lines every time they needed to & let him make the save that he needed to make. They also most have blocked like 30 shots. They never got chip-ie, a style that I loved to play and embraced, and that Cronin seemed to tolerate and even condone at times, but it seems that Coach M will have no part of it and when things escalated he changed up lines and took players out for a shift or two, and all this without Rob Dongara tonight, who was dressed but didn't see the ice. I suspect, you wont be seeing much of him either, too bad, as he is exciting to watch, but adds little to team "O" outside of his abilty to make you look foolish on the odd man rush. Although one of the fastest players in college hockey, & he may have specific uses on PP, set play, etc, he is one dementional in some aspects, thus I hope the coaches work with him to improve his on ice sensability. Anyway, I have been critical over the years and I know this was not New Hampshire’s night, but some of the Cronin teams would not have been able to slam this door. NH warmed up the bus at 10 minutes of the 3rd and that I have not seen in all my 25 + years ever, playing or watching. I was impressed at times with the will and determination. It was fun to watch them tonight! I don't recall any shut outs against New Hampshire. I know its early, but, all you can ask for is quality effort and tonight I saw that! That was a well deserved win.

Terrific game, we played a consistent game the entire time, never fell apart. We blocked shots, worked hard for the puck, and really wanted to win. Great win

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I have to say, the forecheck was on fire tonight; impressed with Madigan's tenure thus far.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Yes very impressive... keep up the great work. It's incredible what winning can do to change people's opinions!
Husky hockey= Great hockey!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Agree with all of the above. Got the impression from my admittedly distant perch that the kids want to play for JM & Co.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Rossi.. some insight & detail in your post.. thanks for that. Would echo a lot of what everyone has said.. that was also some of the best shot blocking i have seen in quite a while. They really helped the goalie out a lot. With the amount of odd man rushes in the 3rd that NU had.. i am surprised we did not convert more goals.. nevertheless, a tough night for DiGirolamo.. i thought the back up came in, in a tough situation & made the most of it for the Wildcats.

Let's keep it disciplined & keep our chin up :). Nice job NU.. good one for the Coaching staff!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

The difference between how we looked on Sunday and how we looked last night was night and day. Here are a few observations I made:

-That must have been one great week of practice. I can't remember UNH having a single grade-A scoring chance all game. No big odd-man rushes or anything. Aside from the one crossbar that UNH had, I don't remember anything close to a goal. Big kudos to Madigan and the rest of the staff.

-Great to see the shutout. Nice to see Rawlings not let in any softies. I think that just as much, if not more credit for the shutout goes to the defense though. It's already been said in previous posts, but they blocked a TON of shots when needed, and then got out of Rawlings' way so he had an unobstructed view of the shot when needed. No spectacular saves by Rawlings, but with his size he doesn't need to make "spectacular" saves as often as other goalies. I think it was a very solid night from Rawlings, and an even more solid night from the defense in front of him.

-I really liked the lines they went with last night. We scored 4 goals, and one goal came from each line. It was good to see Quailer and Tuckerman reunited, and I thought Pimm matched up very well with them. I thought Karlsson meshed well with Saponari and J.Daniels, too. It will be interesting to see where Ferreiro and Dongara fit in in the future.

-This team likes scoring from the dirty areas. The three goals we scored in the first period were all very good passes out in front for tip-ins or quick little shots. I'm still waiting for someone on this team to show that they can snipe though.

-On the freshmen: Manno and especially Reid are improving quickly. Reid definitely showed that he can be a great grinder. Our second goal was a direct result of his hustle and forechecking. Manno made some good passes and threw his body around as well. I agree with the other posters who said that Cornell looked better than Oskroba. He made several great deflections, was always in position, and didn't commit any power play-resulting penalties. Manson still seems a little hesitant when he doesn't have the puck, but he can move the puck and pass well and has a nice shot. He reminds me a lot of how Newton looked two years ago. Karlsson definitely has a lot of potential. Considering last night was his first "real" game, he stood out in my book. Made some great passes and won some battles along the boards. Overall, I am very pleased with this class so far.

A couple non-play related observations:
-Another big (student) crowd last night. Not the most boisterous bunch, but it's definitely an improvement over last year, and all the freshmen are still learning what happens. Hopefully they can keep drawing this well.

-I really, really like the band so far this year. They sound much better than they have at any point over the last two seasons, and I like the song selection a lot more. Hopefully most of them stick with it because it definitely helps the atmosphere in the old barn.

It's going to be two tough games next weekend. I plan on heading out to the Mack Friday night--it's always a very fun place to watch a game IMO. I expect to see an amazing crowd and a rocking Matthews Saturday night for the BC game, it'll be interesting to see how the eagles stack up against UNH tonight.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I thought it was a well-played game as well. Certainly better than the UMass game. Not even close actually. Timing was far better. I'd guess that second week of practice paid serious dividends. But I'm not buying Garden tickets yet. We beat a UNH team that has been outscored 14-1 to start the season. Pull at least two points out of next weekend and I'll probably start thinking that Coach Madigan, the staff and players may really have something for us.

I wouldn't look past PC or UML this year. They both already seem to be improved over last year with new coaching. Probably not the time to give Mountain a start even though I'd like to see him and Witt get some game time.

I'd echo everyone elses sentiments about the first two lines. Should be able to match up talent-wise with most of the league and maybe better than most. Vermeessch by the way looks like he's improved his play since last year. Really like Karlsson and Manno thus far. Hope to be at Volpe on Friday night and certainly at Matthews on Saturday night. I like our chances of taking two points on Saturday night better than Friday night...
