Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Some of you people need to learn about sarcasm, tongue in cheek, and having fun.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I can speak only for myself but I'd love to see NU schedule Army and/or AF whenever opportunities present themselves. It's true that the service academies have to deal with recruiting restrictions that nobody else does but that doesn't mean their players lack heart or guts, or won't make you work for your W (if you even get one). I'd rather play the academies than most of the NCHC/WCHA/AHA.

However, respectfully disagree about sub-2,000 crowds at Matthews. While that was true back in the bad old days, it hasn't been the case in recent years, except during the Xmas break. I'll agree that relatively few games sold out but, at the same time, relatively few were sub-2K. OTOH, I know that Conte was sold out last Sat. but there have been plenty of empty seats there in recent years.

Hokydad - Can you contribute any info/thoughts on Cam Darcy's recruitment? I thought it would be a no-brainer for BU to snag him, but it appears that BC and BU just may not have an open schollie to offer him at this time. Is that about it?

That is exactly what I hear. Both will have early departures, thus the opening. Who ever blinks first, or gets knocked out of playoffs first wins, or loses

Exhibition: 710
UMass: 2,340
UNH: 3,094

You broke 3,000 three times all of last season. You're not exactly in a position to be throwing stones here.

Also, for pete's sake, worst HE fans? My god, how has Hamster not been mentioned!

USHR reported that he is possibly coming back to NU.

NU gets great crowds

if averaging 2250 last year and 3197 the year before is getting "great crowds" in a building that holds 4666 in a university with an enrollment of 20K+,then, yeah, sure, NU gets great crowds

NU's enrollment is not close to 20,000.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Stand corrected. But remember a lot of those people live at home and commute in spite of all the residential growth at NU. Plus the amount of people gone on co-op. So that drops the number quite a bit. Regardless, NU's crowds are lower than they should be but part of that is their own fault for not advertising hockey more, especially to new students. This year with a win over UNH preceded by a game-tying goal with two seconds left vs. UMass, the student momentum has started strong. BC is always a sellout. Next week vs. Merrimack will be a test.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

two ways and only two ways NU loses Friday night:

1) Mack goalie on fire
2) overlook the game for a sold out Matthews the next night.

Only about half that is open to students I'd say. Student crowds have been terrific this year (and in general), it's always the non-student sections that lag behind. Take UMass and UNH, students sections were close to sellout while there was a pretty sparse crowd in the general section.

duly noted. the collegehockeynews lists enrollment at 22,000 ( i get the co-op thing) but what ever. Other than BU folk, can't think of many who don't pull for NU but just wanted to get the facts straight on fan support. most think highly of NU fans but not enough of you (plural) show up in Matthews...............

The Hockey East coaches would beg to differ, as would I. Anything can happen in this league. Providence is not going to finish above BU in the standings, but won Friday night. However, Merrimack is a better team than Northeastern, have had an incredible home ice advantage (although NU won at Lawler last year), and has a better and more experienced coaching staff.

I can't totally blame them, some of the sightlines from the lower bowl of Matthews are downright terrible. There are some that are very good, but the back rows, those obstructed by the press box, and especially those corner seats are just awful.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

i agree with what skinsfan brought up - increasing ticket sales is highly dependent on advertising. the athletics department really didn't start to promote games until 2 or 3 years ago, to which the response has been a small increase in attendance each year. NU just isn't as well known on a local and national level as bc and bu. they see greater attendance levels because they advertise to the townspeople and local hockey teams and because of their success in the tournament. if NU was able to consistently make the tournament over the next 10 years, we'd probably see a general increase in ticket sales from people not affiliated with the school.

definitely can't overlook the game friday. the team needs to focus on coming out of there with a W before moving on to saturday night.

hokydad,
Any idea where KJ Tiefenworth might be heading now that he dc'ed from BC?

I do not feel their team is that much better then what NU is putting out there this year. We match up with them up and down their roster position by position very well.
