Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

On another note, looking forward to see the team scrimmage v/s Cam Darcy & co. this Saturday..
would be nice to see some creativity on both sides. Go Huskies :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Thanks for your comments "Fighting Sioux 23". I hope you get to keep your nickname. Incidentally, what are the Sioux going to use for a nickname? PC = **** shame!
How about the Fighting SueYou's (as in lawsuits). The new logo would be a briefcase and they would represent all of those law firms that advertise on Oprah and drive up the cost of everything from insurance to prescription drugs.

Seriously, the NCAA position on the UND nickname is beyond absurd. If the Sioux tribes don't object, why should the NCAA? And BTW, I once worked for a full-blooded Seminole who was also a Florida State grad. The guy said on many occasions that FSU would be known by something other than Seminoles "over my dead body." Anyway, FSU got to keep it's nickname so how come UND didn't?

Personally, I'm **** tired of instututions like the NCAA caving in to vocal minorities on PC crap.

It is a strange game this weekend, since we are used to playing our exhibitions at the beginning of the year. Hopefully we can get a W and keep that good feeling going. It will be nice to get Oskroba and Stone some playing time. They would not be healthy scratches on a lot of past NU teams. Someone tell Bitetto not to kill Darcy before he even gets here.

It's pretty comical. The fact that the arena is named after a Nazi supporter doesn't bother the UND brass but the Sioux logo is an outrage is pretty backward.

Huh? Stone is first forward in the stands into the lineup when a guy gets hurt. He has gotten 12 games this year, 5 more then the Dong. If anything, Dong needs the playing time, not Stone, who I would expect to see back in again this season especially if certain guys up front continue to struggle. What the kid is lacking in skill, he sure makes up for in heart and his willing to go to the dirty areas of the ice. The goal he almost scored by himself against UML back in December when he took on 2 UML dmen, beat them twice, was more then some guys have done out there all year.

As for Oskroba, which team would he be playing for? The fact that he could not get any playing time so far this year, especially early on when the team was a mess, dressing 6 dmen but only really playing 4 should tell you all you need to know about him. If he does not get any real playing time this semester, he is another Hoefller, depth and emergency only. Cronin and his staff did not always hit on every target, and this kids stats prior to coming here were pretty weak. He has a nice weekend in front of a bunch of coaching staffs two summers ago, and used it to trade up from Quinnipiac, who are probably thanking us today, though they would probably like to have Manson back.

..ha ha, agree! :)
Huskies 01, also in agreement with you, would love to see some more of Dongara & just overall creativity from the team.
Just very happy for the guys right now & the adversity (starting from Cronin & co.) they have had to battle & climb back from. Also real proud of Coach Madigan & his demeanor through this all.. speaks volumes about our team thus far.

Go NU

less Dong. More Stone. Also, i am about to throw Vrolyk in the less category too. Freshmen year Vrolyk is not junior year Vrolyk that is for sure.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I am also wondering about Vrolyk. It seems to be either Stone or Dongara for a lot of people. Lately I've grown to see a bit of something in Stone. Always liked Dongara. What's keeping Vrolyk in the lineup?

My point on Stone is that he hasn't played in almost a month since he was a scratch both games in Minnesota.

Oskroba would have played in the past over guys like Perrault, Linard, Student, Maley, etc. He has played in four games and has been serviceable when he's been on the ice. No one expected Cornell to play as well as he has and Manson has really picked it up in the last 8-10 games. Those guys have forced Oskroba to the rafters but he is at the very least, a solid replacement if/when a d-man is injured. His junior numbers don't really mean anything since he is a physical presence and a stay at home defenseman. I see him developing into a collegiate version of Adam McQuaid.

Go NU

Dongara would be a first liner if he was on the speed skating team. However, until his strength and hockey skills catch up to his footspeed, he belongs in the stands. If you go to the GoNUxtream archives and view some of his early games from this year, you'll discover that he is worthless against opponents agaiinst the boards, is easily knocked of the puck and lacks D1 playmaking and passing skills. In other words, his speed allows him to bring the fans out of their seats from time to time, but he hasn't shown that he has the rest of the tools to make the ordinary plays that are 90%+ of the game.

Stone, by comparison, is much stronger physically and on his skates. His skills seem to be improving, and he plays with intensity. If he continues to develop, he will contribute meaningfully during the next 2 1/2 seasons.

Vrolyk is the best free skater among the this trio. He seems to have lost something following two hip operations. He was terrific on the PK, but this year our PK certainly doesn't reflect anything positive. Even our SH goals have been into empty nets. Robbie's offensive game is a series of "close, but no cigar" situations. Hopefully he has a big goal or two in him this season.

Your overall post is good.. but this really stands out & i agree.
I enjoy his intensity and some of his puck skills.. hopefully he continues improving and the Coaches find room for him in the lineup (perhaps on the PK etc. situations like that & moving on from that). Got nothing bad to say about Stone either.. its nice to have good players competing for spots; what can i say :).

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Well that was interesting.. can someone pls tell the team that when its an exhibition gm.. you don't have to exhibit undiscipline.
Starting goalie did not look that sharp either. I'll give credit to the US Nat team.. their passing was superb & shot blocking was amazing as well.

Oh well.. pls do not play Jack Parker like that on Friday the 13th otherwise superstition will turn to reality :)

ps: Can anyone in University/ Arena admin tell me why the concessions around the arena were closed? Its the first gm of the New Year.. we had several youth hockey teams, families with kids.. heck even members of the Choate team showed up.. families were being directed to eateries around the area to bring the food back?!? Just not right & a terrible impression for those checking out Matthews for the first time. At least have a notice on the website in advance (or on a recorded line).. stating there will be no food or drink at the arena... just not cool.

Okay, done with that. Hope Qualier & Ferreiro are back for the gms that count. All for now.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Alright Madigan - playing all the reserves in one game - kinda scary. Oskroba - looked look a lumbering oaf out there. Dongara - couldn't keep the puck from being knocked off his stick until he finally started passing in the third period.

Hopefully Madigan was only giving Qualier, Ferriero, Pimm, and J. Daniels a night off so he can evaluate who will be first off the pine when we need a sub! BU and BC next week followed by UML is 2 huge weekends in a row!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Oskroba - looked look a lumbering oaf out there.

He sure made me look bad for what I said a couple days ago. He was awful. And what happened to the Clay Witt who's strengths included squaring up the puck and controlling his rebounds? He looks more nervous during exhibitions than he does in games that actually count.

What did you expect? A fleet skating, great puck handling, physical dman just sitting up in the stands because? When a team gets off to the type of start we had, when the coaches really only feel comfortable playing 5 sometimes 4 dmen in a game, and one guy is not getting in the lineup at all, there is probably a really good reason why.

Forwards who can play can get stuck in a numbers game. Dmen who can play typically do not.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

In the event you were not a Matthews tonight, NU is far better team 5 on 5 lines 1 to 3. However, they are far worse in PK, PP and specialty situations. Although there were a host of **** calls NU played very Cronin like un disciplined hockey. If we go to the box we are screwed. We cycled the puck 5 on 5, 5 on 4 and even 4 on 4 far better than BU. CW let in a screen on the 1st goal and then NU gave up the puck behind the net to a streaking BU defender away for a point blank shot, the other 2 goals were given up on PP one during a 5 min major hit to the head by Munson that was questionable. However, NU is a very beatable team because they do not have all all aspects of the game at the level of the top teams in the nation. They are in 9th place in Hockey East. Likely far to much ground to cover, for any consideraqtions this season, if the season ended tonight, we would go home.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

If the Twittersphere has it right, bc is starting seldom (if ever) used senior Chris Venti in goal at Fenway today. Just wondering if it's a token start for a local kid (Needham) or if Yorkie is trying to send a message to Milner and Billet. Guess we'll see in a couple of hours.
