Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Well, this being the argument mill, consider it gristed.

Aside from the comedy provided by this latest poll, it's totally meaningless. But flying under the radar has its advantages so I'm not going to whine.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I'm perfectly okay with this team remaining unranked. The last thing we want is for the team to feel content. They have been playing well, sure, but there are still a lot of areas that need work, and their HEA record is still very bad. I'm sure there was rust for these past two games, having not played for three weeks, but I thought our play was far more sloppy than the previous six games.

Five on five this team is very good, but the power play and penalty kill are both very bad. I think the PK will improve now that McLaughlin is back, but I haven't seem much promise in the power play. Sure they're moving the puck a little better, but it hasn't yielded results. They still can't set up many good chances.

Aside from the one very soft goal he allowed against Princeton, Rawlings was very, very good. I was one of his biggest critics last year, but he has improved a ton. His lateral movement and overall quickness is much better than it was last year. He has also played more aggressively, both in making saves and in coming out of his net to play pucks, and I think that has made him a better overall goalie as well. In the past he rarely made tough saves that required him to use more than just his big frame, but lately he has been making more of those tough saves. The shootout was a pretty good example of that I thought.

I don't get this. Every time the polls come out this is all I hear. Where is this impression that the team will coast as a result of 20+ more votes coming from?

Complacency may have been to blame for the home bc/merrimack losses but I can't believe a number - especially one that has no bearing on anything - will cause the team to implode.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

My chief concern right now has to be the special teams. They simply have to get better if we're going to have a chance in the Beanpot, and have a shot at the Garden and the NCAA tourney. I admit I was wrong about Chris Rawlings. I did not think his ceiling was as high as the way he has played over the winning streak. He's is defying the notion that you cannot teach speed. He simply looks like a faster and quicker goalie, especially laterally. That being said, I don't know how long he can keep up this fantastic roll that he is on. And while he will still be very good when he comes back down to earth, our special teams will need to improve if we're going to win consistently.

Its pretty funny that as long as the current HEA refs are around, its harder to win a Hockey East Championship without a power-play, then it is to win a Stanley Cup. The Bruins would have been screwed if Benedetto and Gravallese reffed the finals. :p

Haha. My biggest problem with officiating in Hockey East are the linesman. Perfect entry into the offensive zone? Offside. A guy 3 feet over the line? No call. Don't even get me going on faceoffs. Those clowns have no idea what they are doing.

Looking forward to seeing you guys in a few weeks.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Northeastern not flying under the radar at College Hockey Weekly, as the Huskies are voted in the Top 10.

Check it out here...

http://www.collegehockeyweekly.com/Weekly-Power-Rankings.html

The in-season turnaround has been pretty amazing, to this point. The wins at ND, Michigan and Minnesota have all been good for Hockey East and terrific for Northeastern.

The tight, early-season losses to BC said that NU were better than their record and awful start. A lot of us were very skeptical of the Madigan hire. But it isn't looking too bad right now.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Thats a BS site. Anyone can make up a similar type of website and just post thier own rankings- that website does not really count

While it is true that anyone could make up a similar site and post their own rankings, College Hockey Weekly has a panel of voters from around the country that submit ballots of their top 10 teams (very similar to USCHO/USA Today/INCH). Those ballots are then added up and the rankings are posted. If you disagree with the rankings that is fine, but it is a legit site and a legit ranking...the 10,000+ visitors it has had in the last 2-3 months show that some people like, and enjoy it. I'm sorry that you do not, but thank you for visiting the site ;).

...and the USCHO rankings are so much better? Really? With a panel of voters that apparently just looks at W-L records and institutional reputations?

Basically. BU at 10-5 with wins over no ranked teams would be higher than Quinnipiac at 12-2 with wins over six ranked teams. And you think these people understand the game of hockey?

They know the game is played on ice. They are pretty sure that they know which teams have won NC during the past decade. That alone gets those teams about 150 votes per poll regardless of what they've done on the ice.

I'm pretty sure that "Big Papa" doesn't represent a part of the NU fanbase. IIRC he is a denizen of another HEA team's "Legion of Honor".

Thanks for your comments "Fighting Sioux 23". I hope you get to keep your nickname. Incidentally, what are the Sioux going to use for a nickname? PC = **** shame!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Big Papa can be confused for Mrs. Whitehead on the Maine threads. Maybe he got so upset that so many Black Bears fans ignored him, he moved on...

North Dakota will simply be "North Dakota" for the next three years as a "cooling off" period. I'm hoping that they use that time to try and get the NCAA's version of "tribal support" (both tribes have given their consent to UND to use the nickname/logo, but the NCAA does not recognize it), but I highly doubt that will happen. As a result, if you ever wanted to own a Sioux jersey, now would be the time to get one.

Got mine last year! Love it, LOVE the green, it will be missed greatly as it is iconic with college hockey
