Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

1. Yes, the results on the shot chart are "obviously" a result of NU thinking ahead to Saturday night. A fact that you can speak to being an absolute because you personally polled each player re: the shot chart. Riiiight. Couldn't have had anything to do with Merrimack's clogging the lanes? Playing good defense? Nope? Ok, well if you're sure it's obvious....

2. Looks like that extra focus didn't help..

Merrimack's defense was in playoff form. No challenging that. Some of the best shot blocking I've seen in a while, and NU had very few great scoring chances.

Tonight's game ... I thought they looked great in the first two periods. I don't even want to talk about the 3rd. Great show by Manno getting the first two of his college career. I think it's time to bring back Dongara (or hopefully get Ferriero in there) in favor of another 3rd line forward who, in my opinion, has a long history of being greedy with the puck and is more of a liability in the defensive zone. Not sure what people see in him.

I sat next to a 2013 recruit (Ross Olsson) and his uncle during the game. Really nice family and the kid seems to have a good head on his shoulders. They all seem excited about his commitment to NU. Too bad we couldn't pull off the win while he was there.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Justin Braun was a heck of a player

So was Tyler Arnason (Oklahoma City, OK)...there is an exception to every rule. The fact of the matter is the best players from WI or MI usually play for schools in those states, much like the best players from MA normally play in HE.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Save the first goal.. cannot blame Rawlings for this.
2 goal lead.. worst lead in hockey. NU absolutely took the 3rd period off even after getting two early PPs. BC were relentless... great hustle & puck cycle in OT.
We needed players to get in the play in the 3rd.. not be spectators.. we got burned.

Hope the Coaches can figure this out soon. Matthews was awesome.. gave the team as much support as i've seen in a while.
Classic college atmosphere..
Nice job DogHouse fans.. team will figure it out sooner or later.. hang in there. Great comeback, congrats Eagles.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I don't know how everyone else feels, but I just never seem comfortable in a close game with Rawlings in net. I have to agree with Rossi and admit that Rawlings is not a big game goaltender. That first goal he let in would have been stopped by 99% of other goalies; he had the angle dead on but still got beat. Also, can someone please explain to me what is with this PP? It is completely atrocious!! We can never cycle the puck long enough to generate any type of quality scoring opportunities and we simply do not have a second PP unit. If Saponari, Daniels, and Quailer aren't out there for the full two minutes, we have no chance of scoring. If we had scored on one of those PPs to start the third, this game is in the bag and we walk away with two points. Finally, I do have to say that the Gaudreau kid looks like one hell of a player and I would have loved to see him play for the Huskies for the next four years.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

in a big game would you rather have him or Brad Thiessen, Keni Gibson, Marc Robitaille, Mike Veisor, Tom Cole or Bruce Racine. Not in any game, in any game CW is likely far better, than those I have mentioned, a big target who can square up..but, I am not saying in any game I am saying in a big game. Who would your rather have between the pipes, in a big game?

Don't take this the wrong way, but what big games did Thiessen/Gibson/Robitaille/Veisor ever win? Seems like Rawlings fits perfectly.

I'm not sure I understand the Arnason analogy, but your overall point is obviously right. I just think you're also selling short the number of good midwestern players HE has had over the years.

They didn't have to win, you were either in a game with them or you were not, they made you comfortable that with a lead you would win, & close the door. BTW, any season game ageist BU or BC is a big game & they all had the ability to shut the door, and all but Brad had much lesser teams in front of them in terms of both O & D. You take a look back at the records. Those guys I mentioned were pretty lights out in the 3rd period with a 2+ goal lead. It's really just a feeling of comfort and from where I was stitting with lots of ex NU hockey players, none oif us felt comfortable. Some of the guys I mentioned may have only had .900 or 890 save % or may have only won 10 or 12 games in a season, but when you had a lead they could all close the door. No lead is good or big enough for Rawlings, and he has great stats but he reminds me of Alex Rodriguez. 250 career home runs in April an May against <.500 teams with nobody on base or another 150 in late August and September with Seattle and Texas when they were 20 games out. It's an just analogy...maybe it's not a good one, but some of the people on here get it. Chris will shout out U-MASS Lowell when they have a down year and stop all 45 shots and will, for a moment look like the 2nd coming of Pat Roy. He will be the D player of the week 5 more times in Hockey East, but he has no 4th gear. He's not Albert Pujols or Reggie Jackson. I mean I could use former NHL goal tenders in this analogy too, but really we would laugh if I said the names of the greats in the same breth as CW.. Thatïs the best I can do.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

So a couple things. First, they didn't deserve to win last night. The OT goal was scored because every NU player was standing still in the defensive zone. They bascially gave up and were hoping that last minute would expire. Also, the freshmen look very good. This is probably the most offensively talented team we've had in years.

I think this has been said before, but I see this team taking a similar trajectory to last years. Struggle the first half, then play much better the second. If they start playing some team team defence and stop allowing 50 shots/game they can make some noise.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

What's a Merrimack? Can someone locate it on the map please.

Who started the unwarranted and un-clever smack talk Thiessen'sBetter?? And Thanks Northeastern but no one needs to explain the sport to me.

You think it's a better offensive team without McNeely, MacLeod, and Reid?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I think the 1st line of Quailer, Saponari, and J. Daniels will be at least as productive as the McNeely/Macleod/Silva line. Karlsson and Manno have contributed already, Reid didn't do much until the last few weeks of the season. Plus Tuckerman should be healthy and Pimm looks to have made strides since last year. I see the team as being tremendously more balanced offensively. Last year all the production came from the first line, that shouldn't be the case this year. The 08-09 team had marginal offensive talent, they were succesful because Theissen could stand on his head and overall they played a defensively responsible game.

So I think the offensive talent is there. The question is team defense, they have to stop giving up 40+ shots on goal. The loss of Oleksiak may end up having the most impact.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Too bad. I really thought you guys would win yesterday. Good effort though.

I think you got lost. This is "Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog"

NOT, "Merrimack 2011-2012 Season Thread: Really, we do have fans!"

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

3 points in 5 games sucks BUT, it is clear this team has a good bit of talent. Reid and Manno were fantastic on the forecheck last night. Manno was the best player on the ice for a while. Scoring, handling BC along the boards and giving 110% each shift. Kid's talented but hey, that's why he could've played in the Q. Need to be more effective on the PP when the top line isn't our but I feel this year will be like last year, slow start, get going around Beanpot time and be the team nobody wants to play in the HE QF's. Don't want to get to far ahead though, so let's just beat Merrimack next weekend at home which is 100% doable. The way they played vs. BC is a win over Merrimack handily.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Ouch that hurt! NU 4 , BC 5 in OT. BC scored 3 goals in the last 17 minutes and NU outshoot 39 to 22. However we were winning 3 to 1 with 12 minutes left in the 3rd period...then the D and the goalie folded like a house of cards in the wind. I was in the Alumni Club tonight, which really was not that great because it was a sell out and you really can’t hear the same through the glass. However, we did show signs of brilliance and even outplayed BC at many times. My assessment of earlier posts has come true and while I do like CR as he can make 30 to 40 saves a night it's the shots he lets in that will keep him that will likely keep him out of the NHL. He is just not a big game goalie, don’t get me wrong he is a very good goalie, but not a lights out goalie. He was great tonight better than the BC goalie but he just can’t slam the door. My feeling is Greg likely knew that too but still lets look at the bright side it was a good game and fairly fun to watch and we have some great players . BC should have scored 5 or 6 goals and we hit posts too, but the 2nd goal he allowed was absolutely horrendous a 5 hole goal that you see given up in town hockey a the mite level.. He stops that one and we win, but granted he stopped 20 others that were much more difficult and I would not be surprised if he stays another year he might even have 15 career shootouts, but in a big game would you rather have him or Brad Thiessen, Keni Gibson, Marc Robitaille, Mike Veisor, Tom Cole or Bruce Racine. Not in any game, in any game CW is likely far better, than those I have mentioned, a big target who can square up..but, I am not saying in any game I am saying in a big game. Racine first Thiessen third. I wouldn't want Rawlings at all, cause I know he will give up atleast 1 soft goal.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Heisenberg reports Ryan Belonger has committed to NU. Youngstown USHL. Anyone have anything on him?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Over on the BC thread.. had a chance to view just the BC goals (thanks TTT20).. you gotta watch the standing around in OT..

at one point Kreider slips (falls down) while cycling the puck.. we have 4 Huskies just watching the show.. no forecheck.. just spectators. Astonishing.

Coaching staff pls take note so we never have a repeat of this in OT or any other point in a game.

Its early in the season.. pls fix this.. now.

I hope we spank Merrimack Friday :).
