Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Also, i'm looking at some tape of the gm.. the 2nd Merrimack goal (early in the 3rd period).. just a bad break for the Huskies. #24 Daniels i think.. takes a stick to the neck & goes down, essentially making it a 5x4 situation for the Warriors. No call, ref prob thought it was unintentional or did not see it. The skater goes in on Rawlings who makes the first save, but the puck gets kicked out to the point where the goal scorer is unmarked for a shot to the left corner.. video is a bit grainy. Good break for them, bad for us with the gm still 1-0. These things are gonna happen in the season.

Rawlings was pulled after that 3rd goal because (i'm assuming), Madigan thought goalie got a good look at it (Bigos was skating laterally/ backwards while taking a wicked slapshot) & Rawlings was on it sliding laterally with the skater.. should have had it. The gm was still within grasp until then.

Merrimack's first goal.. the PP goal was a nice goal with good puck movement. The eventual Karlsson goal for NU was a very nice goal to beat Cannata as well.

All behind us now.. onward.

My understanding was Rawlings was pulled to spark the team more than anything else. Hard to pull a goalie who faced more shots in 2 periods than most goalies see in an entire game.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Last nights game was not a pretty one in any aspect for the Huntington Hounds. The team that played so well defensively against UNH a week ago was no where to be found, and the offense was non-existent. A lot of the credit goes to Merrimack's defense and goaltending. There were no rebounds given up and the defense was all over anyone in front of the net the whole game. If there is one observation to be made, something desperately needs to be done about the powerplay because in a word, it is horrible. There is some cycling going on, which is nice, but there is no one in front of the net and all the shots that come from the perimeter get blocked most of the time. Also, on the PK, they should be more aggressive with the puck handler rather than just sitting in their box and trying to eliminate the passing lanes, which never seems to happen. Put the pressure on the man with the puck, like we did with UNH, and force them to give it up. OTOH, at least I did get to enjoy the fireworks before the game and I was actually impressed with the show seeing that a college was putting it on. Anyhow, I hope the team can pull out a W tonight and at least take a split on the weekend.

Slightly off topic but this is the strangest schedule I have seen in Hockey East, after tonight we will have 5 conference games and Vermont/UMass Lowell will still not have played in conference. I don't know if this is a good or a bad thing.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Learn from last night's game and move on. MC has a very solid team defensively. Rarely will they get smoked this year by giving up 5-6 goals. I'd rather not play them again for a few months but c'est la vie. See them again in a couple weeks I believe.

Probably a little more offensive flow tonight. Just need the Doghouse to be LOOOUUUDDDD!

I think we can overlook your lack of grace. You are relatively new to the winner's circle. Your team is good and will improve further. OTOH, you have a much longer journey before you can be called a winner. :(

I have plenty of grace and have been around long enough to see Merrimack win a lot (80s) and seen them lose a lot. I just found it funny how some NU fans refuse to admit that the Warriors (a lowly D2 school who no one knows about) can have more talent than NU.

That's just not true! Go back through both this thread and the game thread and you'll find more than a few posts tipping the cap and acknowledging Mack's superior play. At least try to be a gracious winner.

I apologize to the NU fans who were not, but there were two in particular who were being jerks. Go through some of my posts. I've talked about how I thought NU was better than an 8th place team like the coaches picked them.

I have to agree.. irishfan85 has been one of the more balanced 'Mack (or Uscho) posters for the most part..
IceWarrior on the other hand.. maybe someone needs to explain the sport to him. :)

Yeah we lost, but tt the end of the day, you're gonna have to go back to your everyday life and continue to live the way you live. :D

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I'm always skeptical how good a kid from Wisconsin/Minnesota is that doesn't play for UW or one of the Minnesota schools. Hopefully I'm wrong, and this is just solid recruiting by Mad Dog.

I've always felt this same way regarding Merrimack recruits from Minnesota. We got one (Bryan Schmidt) who was a good hockey player. He had a lot of offers out of high school, but had a few knee injuries. Supposedly he never recovered. He was good at Merrimack, but I agree with your sentiment.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Although I guess (it's probably the same for Merrimack) I am skeptical when we get a kid from Massachusetts because you know he most likely wasn't wanted by BU or BC.

there are 180 kids from minnesota on D-1 rosters. they cant all play in state. does anders lee ring a bell? the eaves brothers?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

I also said NU would lose if they were to busy thinking of their Saturday night game, which shown by the shot chart, they obviously were.

1. Yes, the results on the shot chart are "obviously" a result of NU thinking ahead to Saturday night. A fact that you can speak to being an absolute because you personally polled each player re: the shot chart. Riiiight. Couldn't have had anything to do with Merrimack's clogging the lanes? Playing good defense? Nope? Ok, well if you're sure it's obvious....

2. Looks like that extra focus didn't help..

Chris Student, Anthony Raiola, Nick Pryor, Tom McCarthy, Billy Simon, etc. Yeah there are some exceptions but for the most part HE players from MN are marginal at best.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Btw, the Eaves brothers are irrelevant because BC is obviously in the recruitment of any junior player in the country. I'm talking about the MN/WI based players that go to NU, UVM, UMA, MC, PC and UML.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2011-2012 Season Thread: Year of the Mad Dog

Ouch that hurt! NU 4 , BC 5 in OT. BC scored 3 goals in the last 17 minutes and NU outshoot 39 to 22. However we were winning 3 to 1 with 12 minutes left in the 3rd period...then the D and the goalie folded like a house of cards in the wind. I was in the Alumni Club tonight, which really was not that great because it was a sell out and you really can’t hear the same through the glass. However, we did show signs of brilliance and even outplayed BC at many times. My assessment of earlier posts has come true and while I do like CR as he can make 30 to 40 saves a night it's the shots he lets in that will keep him that will likely keep him out of the NHL. He is just not a big game goalie, don’t get me wrong he is a very good goalie, but not a lights out goalie. He was great tonight better than the BC goalie but he just can’t slam the door. My feeling is Greg likely knew that too but still lets look at the bright side it was a good game and fairly fun to watch and we have some great players . BC should have scored 5 or 6 goals and we hit posts too, but the 2nd goal he allowed was absolutely horrendous a 5 hole goal that you see given up in town hockey a the mite level.. He stops that one and we win, but granted he stopped 20 others that were much more difficult and I would not be surprised if he stays another year he might even have 15 career shootouts, but in a big game would you rather have him or Brad Thiessen, Keni Gibson, Marc Robitaille, Mike Veisor, Tom Cole or Bruce Racine. Not in any game, in any game CW is likely far better, than those I have mentioned, a big target who can square up..but, I am not saying in any game I am saying in a big game. Who would your rather have between the pipes, in a big game?
