Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

I'll make three points:
- As poor as the start has been for NU, I've seen two worse teams, Lowell and Amherst, in Hockey East. NU has looked solid against some good competition. Obviously, it is disheartening to lose three times to Atlantic Hockey teams.

I've seen all three of those teams in person (UML and NU both vs Maine and UMass vs Army), and from what I saw Northeastern definately looked the best of the three. I honestly don't understand how they lost three in a row to the AHA. If they play like they did against us they should make the playoffs no problem. Best of luck the rest of the season (except when you play us again of couse :))

The problem seems to be that they play up to good competition, and down to (and I mean below) bad competition. I've been watching this team since 2000, and this is the most frustrating season I have ever watched.

Thank you, that is exactly the problem. How does a team come out and play great against UNH and BC but then don't show up against Holy Cross or Bentley. Ever since I have followed the team, that has always been the issue.

So.. the season starts this Friday @ Providence.. we're gonna skate well & take fewer penalties & win of course..

We'll be fine for the home gm on Saturday too ..i just bought a groundhog & we'll both be at the gm
:)

And Maine ... NU also played terrific against Maine. In a just world, they should have alternated wins this past weekend. I was impressed with both teams. Once they start a win streak it will snowball. Just wait and see. I am not even sure they will again this season "play down to the competition". Anyway, they can't since it is pretty much Hockey East teams from here on out ... there will be no more "down teams" for them to play ... :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

The other thing that is telling, go to a high school hockey game around Boston. Check out Duxbury, Hingham, Scituate, Needham if you are on South Shore or Malden Catholic, St. John's Prep, Reading, Burlington, Newburyport, etc if you are on North Shore or Catholic Memorial or BC High around Boston. Then, if you have the Fox College Sports Package, watch some of the Minnesota high school hockey games. There is a huge disparity. The talent coming out of New England is behind that of the Midwest. Check out olympic rosters, development camp invitees, etc if you do not believe me. I'm a Massachusetts guy through and through, but this is just facts.
Facts? Maybe. But twisted a bit I'd think. So many of the Mass High Schools lose kids to the prep schools here as well as juniors! I know that happens in the Midwest, particularly with juniors but not so much with the preps. I wouldn't say the talent is all that bad. Malden Catholic has probably five kids on their team this year who will be playing D1 hockey over the next few years. Not too shabby. The Massachusetts/New England talent seemed to take a big dive in the 90's but I think it's made a pretty strong return.

Ask anyone with knowledge of the situation. High school hockey is down, big time in Massachusetts. Too many watered down junior leagues with parents sending their kids to play for lower level junior teams with false hopes of Division I aspirations. Sure, Malden Catholic has a decent squad. I'm not saying there aren't some decent teams, but all across the board, the level of competition with school boy hockey in Massachusetts is down. Don't believe me? Go to a game and try to not be biased. I played high school hockey in Mass and besides college, have never lived anywhere else. I love it here, but the talent is down and too many kids are being lost to watered down junior leagues. The EJHL is not the USHL, BCHL or AlbertaJHL, but it is decent hockey. However, there are some other junior leagues like the Empire, Atlantic and IJ that is just particular horrid.

I'd love to see high school hockey bounce back. I'd love it if the EJHL made a rule you couldn't play there until you finished high school, but they are in the money making business. High school hockey is still a great take, as it revolves around school and town pride with kids giving it their all.

High school hockey in MA is so bad now that there is no reason to even look there, and the few kids that do have the talent are going to BC.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you. Obviously when just about every D1 high school team is minus two or three or more of the best players from their town, it's going to draw down the level of play. Hell, when Reading won the Super 8, probably the best player from Reading for that grad year might have been Steve Whitney but he was in prep school not the Middlesex league. What I'm saying is that if all of these players weren't moving on after the 9th or 10th grades to prep or juniors, then the level of competition would obviously be higher. Heck, I'd guess the Globe's All-Star team would be completely replaced if you included all the players who went to prep schools instead. All but two or three players I'd guess.

I still think the level of talent now is higher than it was 8-10 years ago. Seemed like a real funk for a while.

I like the EJHL. It seems to be a league with some very, very good players and many, maybe two-thirds who will head to D3. Nothing wrong with that. I play with lots of those guys over the summer(getting smoked usually) and they would all be superstars in high school(or already were). Many of them just aren't there though.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

In other news... the mens basketball team squeaked out a 1 point win in OT against Southern Illinois on ESPN this morning. They're now 2-0.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Pls do not complain.. if our hockey team could squeeze out anything.. (OT or otherwise), i'd be quite happy.. Bouncyball is doing fine..

Coen needs to take Cronin out for a drink (Cronin buys of course) :).

If Cronin is making more than Coen that is a shame. I say this as someone who prefers hockey to basketball, but the success of the basketball team is more important for the growth of the university. Coen is a tremendous coach and recruiter and has already received interest from other schools this past offseason. We need him to stay, give the man a raise

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

I'm not sure if Cronin does/does not make more than Coen. My comment was more tongue in cheek in that Coach Cronin should buy the man (Coen), whatever & then seek some sagely advice.. :)

..and yes, i agree.. Coen is a tremendous Coach & motivator. BC was silly to let him slip away, but that's our gain. Give him his due & keep him at Northeastern.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

gotcha. i was reading a little too much into your post. i am pretty sure they never disclosed salaries and it'd be interesting to see what they actually are.

Only if the drink is OJ, as Cronin is a teatotaler.

I don't know if Coen makes more or less than Cronin, but nationally College hoops coaches are much better paid than college hockey coaches except for a few isolate situations like NoDak or bu.

NU Bee - The University is going to grow regardless of how the Men's BB team fares. A great team would engender pride and positive school spirit on the part of future (and present) alumni. That can only lead to greater donations and perhaps accelerated growth. I think that was what you were implying.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Sadly, the BB team has been a joke compared to what was there when Calhoun was the NU coach. Guys like Wes Fuller and John Williams would have been first options on almost all of the teams they've had since the 90's other than when Barea was at NU. Reggie was the best but the supporting cast was very good.
