Northeastern 2024-25: Last Days (Maybe) for the Old Barn

I had to turn it off after the second. There is a clear skill gap issue, but the biggger issue which we have been talking about is overall lack of effort and some extremely questionable decision making that is starting to seem like is the coaching staffs intent.

This team does not skate for neutral pucks even when advantaged, and they only coast to pucks that are theirs. At this point they have to be being coached to concede every puck. Every team in the league has the playbook that all you have to do is pressure them hard because they aren’t racing to the pick and they fold. Meanwhile there’s no fear of taking penalties because this power play is by far the most abysmal any of us have probably ever seen. I think it’s at the point where it’s not just an execution issue, but no one has coached them what to do with the puck

I wasn’t hoping for a win. Just hoping for competitive games and it’s a damn shame they can’t keep it respectable.

Once BC was up 4-1, I knew it was time to find something else to watch. We gave up goals in the first minute of the first and second periods, always a terrible sign. BC looked like the pros and NU looked like the JV. There is no consolation in knowing it will be NU's first Beanpot Consolation since '17.

Sadly, I think NU has started down the slope of a downward spiral. No show-stoppers (that I know of) in the once-robust pipeline thanks largely to NIL, which has morphed into unabashed pay-for play, and not just football and hoops. Almost impossible for mid-majors like NU to keep up. Maybe even BU over the long haul.

The things that are happening in college sports is not good for overall competitiveness in any of the major sports. Ohio st. spending 20 ml on NIL money, their franchise is valued at 20 Billion ?? It is good that some of the "scholar athletes" are getting compensated rather than just the schools and the coaches but we have entered into a new era and the pendulum has swung too far in the opposite direction. I am all for the players getting a piece of the pie (it is a small percentage that get anything) but we have gone from total control over the players to what now appears to be the wild west. It is not for the better.

The previous post. All of it.

The pendulum has indeed swung too far, and I'm surprised more people aren't alarmed about the future of college sports in general and college hockey in particular. Nobody, including me, would begrudge student athletes from making a few bucks for making an appearance or plugging a local product, which is how NIL was originally sold. But that idea was quickly highjacked by the usual P-4 suspects and their cadres of agents, promoters, and assorted shady characters. Heck, even BC is rumored to be throwing seven figures at a purported future consensus NHL #1. (BC denies it but where there's smoke....)

NIL in its current unconstrained form is intended to make the rich (i.e., huge state universities) even richer. The only private schools I can see keeping up are behemoths like Notre Dame and Southern Cal. Maybe Duke. I just can't see private mid-majors like NU being able to compete in this kind of money game. Even BU, and maybe even BC over the longer haul.

Starting to wonder about the future viability of the Beanpot.

I think the solution will be to eventually leave Hockey East, let the deep pocketed schools compete in a division nationally together.

This discussion actually belongs on some other thread but FWIW, my take would be for the P4 schools to break away and form the PCAA (Professional College Athletes Association) because P4 football and hoops is just that. Hockey at those schools not far behind. Then the rest of us can get back to real college sports and put the "student" back in "student-Athlete."

In the meantime, the search for hockey rock bottom at NU sadly continues.

Well stated.

A little late but I managed to snag a ticket for Monday night. Watched period one at home. Dominating H, up 1-0 and Whitehead has another Rawlings-esque flub. Got into the Garden, up to my seat, and it's 4-2 Harvard. The 15-3 shot advantage has been erased. Conversation with the usher, he says 'NU has taken some penalties'. Understatement. Harvard has 4 power play goals. The Jekyl/Hyde Syndrome in full bloom. With all the issues we've batted around, goaltending hasn't really been focused on. Whitehead is a bit of a J/H case himself.

Not sure is this ever made it into this board but thought this was cool to share:

Pretty sure i sat in those or similar years ago for a BU/NU game.

I'm typically reluctant to criticize players if for no other reason than, despite the professionalization at the D1 level, they're still kids. And especially reluctant to criticize goaltenders on teams with offensive limitations. But I do think it's fair to say that Whitehead's game seems to be off compared to last year.

Hard to have a good season when the team in front of you is objectively terrible, but he’s definitely had his challenges out there. Especially the last few games where you can tell he is just shaky back there. I was hoping Quentin would get the start tonight

depth scoring????? good penalty kill????? great defensive effort all around???? who is this team??not even mad about only 2 shots in the 3rd or the amount of penalties. hell of a debut from Quentin, not only a shutout in your first start but even got an assist.

appreciate seeing signs of life... northeastern huskies have been so depressing im watching more uconn games this year.

Jekyll shows up the one game I don’t go to, but I managed to watch on TV.

Regardless of record I’d be thrilled if they play like that from here. Connor had some serious energy and the whole team seemed to rally for Quentin.
