Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Didn't the Feds just give it to them after the drawdown in Iraq and Afghanistan?

I think the departments needed to pay shipping to get the larger equipment home. I recall hearing stories of trucks being stripped of usable parts and abandoned in the deserts because the cost of bringing it home isn't worth it to the DoD.

I agree with this 100%.

I own a number of guns. I've owned a gun since I was a teenager. None of them have ever caused any trouble, but that's primarily because I've only had them out to go hunting.

I've never understood why anyone would want to just walk around with a gun, unless they had to. I understand if you're a cop, or a soldier or security guard. Or if you need to carry it because you're actually hunting.

But as someone who has carried guns before, I can state with personal experience that they are heavy, and awkward to be lugging around. They're uncomfortable to have in your pocket or on your belt. It's like walking around with 6 rolls of quarters strapped to your pants. It's uncomfortable to lug one around strapped over your shoulder.

Couple that with the fact that carrying a gun in public is like running around after midnight. No good can come of it. Either you're going to be placed in a position to make a bad decision, or you're going to put someone else in a position to make a bad decision, and bad things are going to happen.

I am a total supporter of the right to own and possess guns, and I have never believed in the foolishness of trying to prevent deaths by limiting the style of gun that can be sold, or the number of rounds the gun can hold. But for the life of me I can't figure out why someone would want to lug a gun, any gun, around in public with them.

I think the need is social more than anything. Maybe even a little bit of posturing. I would stop short of using the word "intimidating" but I have definitely had an experience where the CCers were not hiding it well and quite frankly it's more than a bit disconcerting.

A few weekends back, Mrs. EoDS and I took mini-EoDS to Bay Beach Amusement Park in Green Bay (for those not aware: it's a dirt cheap amusement park where rides are 1-4 tickets and tickets are a quarter- some thrill rides but mostly kids stuff, lots of families do picnics there).

We were waiting in line to get on a little train that goes around the park and the waiting area is train depot themed, right down to some signs about "passenger rules". One such rule is to "check your luggage". Two guys are a little bit behind us and one of them audibly jokes about not checking all of his luggage and motions to his waist. I notice this and am immediately aware that you can totally see the holsters bulging in their shirts a bit.

I didn't say anything, and as far as I know that was the end of their questionable behavior (although I did start to notice that they looked around at other people a lot). It's be disingenuous hours to say that they were intentionally intimidating or being militant about they fact that they were carrying. But ****ed if it didn't unnerve me to think "oh, there's some strangers packing at a family park, in the rides for younger kids, doing a terrible job hiding it. It definitely made me wonder if it would even be worth it to speak up to such a person if they did something like cut in line.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

That's what the chief of police said on Sunday or Monday. No one asked him when the department received the cameras.

A good journalist would have snagged that line and went as far with it as they could.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

It's getting real now. Police coming in with tear gas and rubber bullets. Along with a crowd control alarm.

Priceless had a great re-tweet a little bit ago:
‏@AdamWeinstein: All the cutting-edge nonlethal weaponry I saw tested at Quantico in '99 is in play in Ferguson, minus the training

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

"We can't hear you, use your big-boy voice!" --protester to cops.

That is unwise. Don't provoke the police.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Here's an idea:

Go home for the night. Protest during the day.

This night time rioting is like carrying a loaded weapon in public. It's completely unnecessary and eventually someone is going to get hurt.

It's gaining nothing and only fueling the problems. Stay out of the streets, don't block traffic, don't cause damage, don't assault the police, and you will have no problems.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

What are you watching Brent?

The second livestream link that was posted. And I agree with everything about protesting in the daylight. The cops told them to do that. Don't try and test the police. Not smart.

All the protesters can be charged with is "disturbing the peace" (can't really say blocking traffic or anything; there is none). Lots of leeway in quelling that "disturbance." HOWEVER, this is overkill. So much overkill.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

dx: cops fired tear gas, rubber bullets, and other things that cause minor fires. Pushed the crowd back a block or two. Now it's back to quiet.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

That video wasn't live. I think it was from earlier tonight.

Here's the thing. Is it overkill? Probably. But after the riots and looting after the first night, it stopped being overkill. The police are trying to keep nighttime gatherings to a minimum because of the potential for more violence and the obvious disturbing the peace and impeding traffic. What happens when someone driving gets scared and hits someone with their car?

Neither side is doing the situation a favor.

Sure seems overly heavy handed.

Of course the other side is just waiting for rioting, looting or burning so they can say why didn't the police show strength to deter it.

MSNBC has a collective boner over this.

On another note... teargas sucks.
