Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Who is "he" and who are "they?"

We're the journalists identified as such? We're they violating the law?

But no, you're right. This is the first step in Obama's master plan to silence the journalists and take away the guns.
I don't think Obama is bright enough to have a "master plan"

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Lay off the infowars priceless.

It's always been well within the law to disperse rioters and if you don't disperse you stand to get arrested.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

I don't understand the desire to carry every where. What the hell kind of Wild West are you living in that you need a gun to go to Chipolte? Do you really go through life that scared? Seems like a crappy way to live. The odds of being hit by a car are much higher than being shot at a restaurant.
I agree with this 100%.

I own a number of guns. I've owned a gun since I was a teenager. None of them have ever caused any trouble, but that's primarily because I've only had them out to go hunting.

I've never understood why anyone would want to just walk around with a gun, unless they had to. I understand if you're a cop, or a soldier or security guard. Or if you need to carry it because you're actually hunting.

But as someone who has carried guns before, I can state with personal experience that they are heavy, and awkward to be lugging around. They're uncomfortable to have in your pocket or on your belt. It's like walking around with 6 rolls of quarters strapped to your pants. It's uncomfortable to lug one around strapped over your shoulder.

Couple that with the fact that carrying a gun in public is like running around after midnight. No good can come of it. Either you're going to be placed in a position to make a bad decision, or you're going to put someone else in a position to make a bad decision, and bad things are going to happen.

I am a total supporter of the right to own and possess guns, and I have never believed in the foolishness of trying to prevent deaths by limiting the style of gun that can be sold, or the number of rounds the gun can hold. But for the life of me I can't figure out why someone would want to lug a gun, any gun, around in public with them.

I can agree with nearly all of this. I have been in a few positions where I would have felt much better if I had some sort of protection. But yeah, needing to carry an AR-15 in the open? Yikes.

If I were a cop I wouldn't set foot outside the precinct office unless I had one of those "go pro" type cameras. It's pretty easy for everyone to sit and criticize the big, bad police when none of us are there to see it. Those two journalists didn't get what they deserved. They got exactly what they wanted.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Maybe I don't know the social makeup of the St. Louis area, but this easily could have played out on the south and west sides of Chicago.

I'm a little taken aback by the lack of media coverage, but being journalists reporting on dire situations in the US doesn't make CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, or whoever any profit. Stick to the money making talking points of global issues. Or discussing the deaths of celebrities, because that's "more important" than discussing the real issues.

I get the feeling that we're close to a tipping point, but this situation will diffuse with no real changes made. Neither side wants to cause the teeter totter to tip over. And the rest of the US will move on... updating their Twitter to read about the third celebrity death this week, Google-ing to find out why the Kardashians won't film the next season of their show, Instagram their food, and jump right back onto their #firstworldproblems on Twitter.

If the Revolution took place today, people would Instagram the lanterns adding fancy filters to them, Facebook about the high cost of their "delicious tea I NEED every day!" and Tweet about how awful the King is, but won't do anything to change things for themselves.

*edit*
Is Al Jazeera America covering the Ferguson story? I don't get the channel because I'm too cheap to pay Comcast for crap channels I would only tune into a few hours a year, and Al Jazeera has blocked the stream of their English feed in the US thanks to the deals struck with the cable companies.

For the record, I don't carry, I don't have a CCP. I just believe that if someone else wants to, then they should be able to, being that they are of a proper mental state and law abiding. The only time I carry my handgun is as a sidearm while deer hunting. Other than that it is a defense weapon in my home, and used for recreational target shooting.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Why do most of the shooting epidemics take place in locations where firearms are supposedly banned? Why did the Japanese never try to attack on American soil in WWII? Even the perception that there could be weapons makes the idiots think twice before starting stuff.
"Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor??"

This is kind of how I feel about the situation. It's easy to criticize the big scary police (MSNBC inferred the cops were provoking the situation by carrying guns, which sparked my original post) but what so you want them to do? Hang the cop involved int he city center?

Christ. Some Internet a holes thought they got a hold of the name of the cop and released it (I'm guessing Anonymous did this) and the poor guy got all sorts of threats.

Let the FBI and the SLC police run through their investigations and see what comes of it.

The only time people are open carrying AR-15s is to make a point. It is legal to open carry in many states, but it really would suck to carry a cumbersome .22 caliber semi-auto rifle (that is all an AR-15 is, nothing different than a simple sporting .22) for protection. I wouldn't want to carry my .357 either, as it is too large and heavy, that would be a good fit for my 9mm.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Oh and my favorite stat being bandied about is how there are only three black cops on the force.

How many applied? How many qualified? Of those that are qualified, how many were rejected?

It's such an absurd and misleading statistic without any other information backing it up.

Amazingly, when one of the towns that my wife's office covers added cameras to their police and required their usage, use of force and citizen complaints both dropped precipitously, as in like 75%. My wife's job (she's a public defender) also got harder because it's tough to argue with video.

Why this city doesn't have dash cams in 20-fukeen-14 is beyond me.

And to piggyback off that, I'm loving the quote I've seen from some citizen at what looked like a meeting with the chief that he believes the police force should represent the ethnic makeup of the community it serves.
Um, no.
So if that demo changes, do officers have to be fired and others hired to re-match the makeup?
I'm also not convinced that people who are of a different race of an officer telling them not to do something will all of a sudden start to listen if that cop matches their race.

Yeah, they wouldn't be castigated and called something terrible like an Uncle Tom or anything. That's never happened before to black cops.
