Which brings up a thought... In some states, you can get married before the age of consent previously described. Is it still rape if you are married and under said age?

There are states, like Kentucky, where the age of consent is 18 unless married, at which point the age of consent to marriage is 14 and must have parental authorization.

I'm surprised that isn't used as a back door no-sex-before-marriage push, then.

I would think that was the original intent, but people were only willing to curtail their desires to live their lives in private by so much.

Nope, because then The Jesus says it's OK.

Many deep south and midwest states used to have really, really low ages of consent with parental permission. I guess the father's divine right to barter his daughter's chastity took precedence.

Makes sense, given our tradition of strong property rights...and the underlying assumptuon that women are property.

Which is why many fundamentalist Christians go to the wall to suppress female sexuality. In the Abrahamic tradition, men own their wives' and daughters' sexuality. Women's equality robs the fundamentalist male of his property.

My wife takes all my money and no way am I a fundamentalist. :)

I'm not so sure that it was women themselves considered as property, but it was a white woman's virginity that was actually the property. Black women received no protection from statutory rape laws, and everyone assumed they were someone's property.

But they weren't property as women. The Magic Book gave men dominance over women and whites dominance over blacks.

Also, I'll bet it was illegal for a non-owner to rape a slave woman. That would have been property damage.

Hey now, the price for Obummer's daughter's hand in marriage is quite high...

You are correct in that. I vaguely remember reading something about that in a historical book once upon a time. Though I don't think it was a criminal case, rather a civil suit becuase the slave became pregnant, limiting the amount of work she could do and adding a mouth the owner had to feed.

Here is the article I saw earlier.

I think the fact that for years it was a defense if you could prove the woman a tramp demonstrates that it was really the purity of the woman that was the valuable commodity, not the woman herself.

Or not human. If you're not human, you have no rights.

Well, maybe. We're going ape poop over a lion dying in Africa and don't give a poop about people violently dying in the cities.

We we try to care but when someone dies and people are outraged we are told not to be. Some nut shoots up a school, dont get outraged over gun violence. Cops kill an unarmed dude on video, dont judge and keep quiet. Muslim Extremists kill a bunch of innocents, ignore any and all religious aspects and make sure not to offend. The only hing we can talk about is how we cant talk about anything.

.

Edit: I admit, for different reasons, but the end emotion is the same.

Welcome to the New World Order.

BTW, guns don't kill people. People kill people. Water can even be lethal, are you going to ban that next?
