Planet X? We could merge this with the Dr. Forrester thread.

So one of the alternate jurors for the James Holmes trial wore a Metallica Ride the Lightning shirt to the sentencing phase (album prominently features an electric chair in its artwork) and the local news is having a pearl-clutching extravaganza.

Can a good defense counsel use that as indicative of bias? I mean, obviously that would be BS, but our legal system enshrines all sorts of BS.

Apparently the guy's a bit of a metalhead and has worn other metal shirts to court before. Judge looked at it and said "LOL." Even called out the reporter for trying to invent a story.

Apparently I severely overdressed for court last year, when I went to jury duty in a full suit.

NBA Player Josh Smith: "$6.9 million this year will be a little harder on my family."

First it was Latrell Sprewell, and now this. What are you feeding your family that $6.9 million isn't enough?

He'll lose 50% or so in taxes. Then there's the cars, houses, posse, kids in various cities. Figure that's at least $1 million. The agent takes 4%.

He'll be lucky to have $1 million after fixed costs.

Some guys just have it rough, I'll tell ya. Hope he can catch a break one of these days.

Or Dan Ellis, for us hockey fans. And in his case, he took a deserved pay cut because he sucked.

Look, I get it. These guys are spending big bucks on mansion payments, toys like boats and cars, in some cases they do have a family, etc. At some point though, you have to be responsible and bank a decent chunk of that money for the future. Not to mention, consider that the majority of the country isn't living like you. Sadly, many of them do not.

Right, too many guys go out and start spending money like water, buying flashy suits and cars and other ridiculous stuff. Haven't they seen and heard all of the other guys who lived large and wound up pennyless when the money stopped coming in. Isn't the average Pro career less than 5 years?? I know a lot of those guys are coming from nothing, but cripes, ya don't need to have the flashest house in Miami. You can do quite well in a nice house that's on the low end of the McMansion scale.

Fact is, most people are bad with their money. I admit, despite my dad's best efforts I am not the best, but at least I sock 13% away to retirement and account for my bills before I start blowing the balance on vacations and such. Sooner or later, when a wife and kids come along, I'll get a lot more conservative about that too.

Imagine if a juror had shown up wearing a crucifix ... or rosary beads! --> A Cath-o-lic! They're anti-death penalty!
