Re: Nice Planet © 2009

Are there a lot of Jewish people in Fairmont?? I was thinking poor or cheap...

No clue, but tossing a penny refers to the "money-pinching/grubbing Jews" around the area I am from.

When I was in high school, my school wasn't a rich school at all. We were also in the same conference as St Louis Park MN (where that new Coen brothers movie is based, and has a large Jewish population). At a hockey game, bagels were thrown on the ice, IIRC. Well, our school ended up going through sensitivity training, and during one of the lectures someone rolled a penny on the floor from the back of the room to the front.

Needless to say, a *storm happened.

And no, I wasn't part of it at all.

I'm not Jewish but I wouldn't pass up free bagels. I mean, come on.

I wouldn't either. And oh yeah, forgot the other side of the story: many of my fellow students heard SLP students say stuff like "if you go to Cooper, make sure to bring a flashlight, since it's so dark..."

Oops.

HAHAHAHA...I remember that, I was in 7th grade. At the next Cooper/Park game at the Rec Center, they had signs designating the section for each team's fans. SLPPD stood on the steps between them for the whole game....

The Cooper fans were also yelling anti-Semetic things at the Park players and fans and one parent got fed up and tried to go after a bagel thrower, so it wasn't just because of bagels.

I know it wasn't just because of bagels, but I thought that's the act that REALLY put it over the top. There was a LOT of stuff happening that game.

I didn't know the penny thing. I remember the bagel thing though...

The penny thing happened in a classroom at Cooper during sensitivity lectures, not at the game (that I remember). It was really bad.

Cooper wasn't exactly the epitome of class when I was there. The bouncyball team averaged (AVERAGED) 1.5 technical fouls a game, mostly due to mouthing off/starting fights (including a scorekeeper's fight)/so-called "riots"/etc.

Wow...Nothing like that happened over at North High in North St. Paul...I remember though some sort of brawl at a basketball game with St. Thomas Academy, but who wouldn't want to fight them. I wasn't at the game so I don't know much about it. We had a gang fight in a parking lot and a knife fight once...Nothing really happened though, principal wanted to keep it quiet so they wouldn't have to hire more security.

Jeez. I think the biggest thing (and the turning point when many transferred to Armstrong, thereby giving THEM the problems) was the "riot." Some student from another school was at Cooper to see his cousin. Not allowed. Was detained. So the Cooper student got mad at that, and ran around the hallways yelling "RUN AND RIOT!!!!" A few actually did make some noise, so to speak, and ran out. The staff freaked, called the cops.

When THAT happened, many (maybe up to half of the student population) simply stood up and walked out, no noise, no running. More of a "sweet, we can get out of class" sort of deal. It was on the news and everything.

Honestly, they made it sound like the LA Riots in the newspaper/media. It was hilarious.

Most of the trouble was from people from outside the area coming in and having a problem with somebody at our school.

I remember seeing students in the stands holding up dollar bills when players from SLP would be introduced when we played them in football (I went to Tonka). If I was in the stands I would have not been happy. For some reason it didn't happen at any of the hockey games, probably because back then we usually beat them 7-1 or 8-0 and no one cared to mock them because they were so bad. It also never happened at track meets because the only people that went to those were parents. :D
