Re: Nice Planet 2012

Rapist kills his victim so she can't testify against him. In Texas. That's capital murder, bub, get ready for a hot shot.

Good riddance, but...

Davis told authorities that Gray was surprised to see him but got into his car when he told her he wanted to talk to her about the sexual assault case.

...what an incredibly stupid girl.

Newly released documents reveal the extent of US knowledge of the cynically savage Soviet slaughter of Polish officers, intellectuals and professionals in the Katyn forest. We covered up the massacre, in part, so as not to offend our "gallant Russian allies." A long piece. But worth your time.

War makes strange bedfellows. If it was not for the godless commies, it would have takes a long time to defeat the heathen Germans. So you have to ask "What would the exposure have done to the war effort?" If it would have hurt it, you hold your nose and give it a pass.

Re: Nice Planet 2012

Bob, this is not directed at you. I know I'm going to take heat for this because it was only 11 years ago, but...do we still watch dozens of angles of footage from Dealey Plaza every Nov. 22nd? Do we gather around the TV to formally remember the Pearl Harbor massacre to the beat of the media drum every Dec. 7th? Oklahoma City on April 19th?

I'm not trying to hate America. I'm not helping the terrorists win. I'm not deliberately trying to be an ass. I simply want to know why everyone feels that the media should go through the dog and pony show every year. For those select few of you who are old enough to remember, please help me understand. Did people still have moments of silence for Pearl Harbor in 1952? Did JFK's assassination continue to get serious media vigils in 1974? Was anyone offended if this did not happen? We barely remember OKC, which was the worst incident of terrorism in my life prior to 9/11.

Am I a shithead for not spending more than a few minutes today recalling where I was and thinking about the victims and their families, without the aid of media stimulation?

I suspect a big part of the outrage is simply because Today was interviewing those Kardashian whores.

You won't get criticism from me. I think it's perfectly fine to remember the day in your own way. Especially if you remember it in a private manner. It's become a dog and pony show. To the point that I get dirty looks for walking around during God Bless America when I'm at a baseball game (not even on 9/11).

You don't need to worry about wearing your patriotism on your sleeve to love your country.

The exact reason I was critical of people who questioned politicians not wearing their effing flag pins back in 2004...and I was a hardcore Catholic school-bred Republican at the time.

Re: Nice Planet 2012

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit I was critical of those politicians who didn't wear them. But I guess that's the wisdom we gain from age. I was barely out of high school back in 2004 so I didn't have what I now consider to be a mature view on the subject.

Although, I will also admit, part of me thinks the lapel pin should be worn by our elected leaders. I won't castigate anyone for not wearing one as I did back in 2004, but it's definitely a plus as insignificant as it is.

Well, maybe. It's useful to recall Stalin and Hitler were allies and divvied up Poland between them. And it's not like Stalin would have opted out of the war once the Germans launched Barbarossa. He had no choice. So I'm not at all certain that letting the world know of Soviet butchery would have affected the war effort to any great extent. But it might have let the world know a little sooner just who we were dealing with. Would have been a body blow to CPUSA.

Yeah, but towards the later part of the war, when Germany was getting squeezed hard, and we had pretty much taken Italy out, wasn't there a push by some of the Nazi's to get the Western Powers to go take on Russia? Wouldn't that allowed Germany to quietly cover up the fact that they killed God knows how many during the Holocaust?

As bad as what Katyn was, it still kind of pales in comparison as to what the Nazi's did.

It's true that Himmler and Goering, to name two, tried to work out some sort of peace deal with the Allies that didn't include the Soviets. I'm not aware of any evidence those overtures were met with anything other than categorical rejection. Since Allied forces had over run some of the death camps (there's film of Ike touring them) it seems doubtful they had any realistic expectation of "quietly covering up" anything.

Frankly, while the body count of the Holocaust was many times greater than the Katyn massacre, I'm not comfortable with your apparant attitude that Katyn was the price we (and of course the Poles) had to pay for a successful alliance to defeat Hitler. And it wasn't as if Katyn was the only monstrous crime committed by Stalin. You're aware of the terror famine in Ukraine (the Holodomor) that killed millions, perhaps even more than in the Holocaust, right? Of course you wouldn't have been aware of it if you'd been relying on Walter Duranty and the NYT, but that's another rant for another day.
